1 ETI WORLD ISSUE 14, MAY GRAFTON GROUP TRIP, JUNIORS AND ADULTS Short Shot FRENCH OPEN TIME It s that time of year again, where we hit the red clay of Paris to see the finest players in our game attempt to win the second grand slam of Can Rafa make it 10 French Open crowns? He is truly the greatest clay court player the world has ever seen. Who can dominate in the women s now that Serena, the tennis queen will not be there? Will Maria Sharapova make an immediate impact ala Roger Federer on his comeback trail? Speaking of which, surely Roger cannot add a second French crown to his resume? Tune in from Sunday May 28 for all the action. See page 3 for handy hints on clay court tennis. GRAFTON, HERE WE COME The first of our big trips will be to the 90th NSW North Coast Tennis Championships held in the beautiful country town of Grafton. This event is a throw back to the fantastic atmosphere of Australian country tournaments that were such a main stay of Australian tennis culture. As life has evolved, these events have become less frequent and as such we are looking forward to the experiencing. The country areas make the whole event an occasion, not just a tennis tournament. We will be departing Caloundra Tennis Centre Friday morning, June 9 and returning Monday afternoon June 12. This event is open to players of all ages and standards, with Australian Ranking points and AMT points on offer and also special singles and doubles and mixed and also B grade, ensuring all are catered for. 2 Elite Tennis International ISSUE 14, MAY 2017 TUESDAY S SPECIALISED TRAINING SESSIONS Julia, Jay, Flynn, Nathan, Tom and Milly at the Green Ball Serve Session Nice backhands Orange Ball players! We have had the first two weeks of our specialised training sessions on a Tuesday afternoon. Week one we had a Green Ball Serve session followed this week with an Orange Ball Backhand session. The in-depth analysis, with the ability to concentrate solely on a few particulars within the day s stroke is invaluable. The participants had a great time and picked up some handy hints to take with them to their regular sessions and the practice court. Our next session is Tuesday May 16, 3:45-4:30pm with the shot of the day being Green Ball backhands. Tuesday May 23 will see our first Red Ball session working on forehands. MATT S TIP OF THE MONTH Be willing to fail at a new skill Whether it s a new way to hold the racquet or a new way to swing don t be put off by failing over and over every time you fail you get 1 step closer to success. Remember you have never actually failed until you stop trying! Imagine if you quit trying to walk as a baby because you couldn t do it now look how easily you walk it all just takes time and persistence 2

3 Elite Tennis International Caloundra Tennis Centre and ETI were well represented at the latest Sunshine Coast Junior Development Series held last weekend at Caboolture. Aidan Brighouse, Cooper Drew, Flynn Drew, Jack Dixon, Alex Smith, Milly Bonassi and Patrick Coleman all took part. ISSUE 14, MAY 2017 CALOUNDRA JUNIORS EXCEL AT CABOOLTURE JDS Jack Dixon won the 15 boys singles winning all his matches throughout the weekend, he then teamed with Aidan Brighouse to take out the 15 boys doubles. Aidan Brighouse lost a close match to Jack in the semis of the singles in a great performance. Cooper Drew finished fifth overall in this age division. Alex Smith lost a tough first round in the 13 boy s singles before playing nice tennis to win the remainder of his matches in the compass draw, equivalent to winning the consolation. Good job Alex. Ace time Patty Coleman! Great shot Flynn Drew! Milly, Patrick and Flynn all played above themselves throughout the weekend. It is tremendous to have such effort from all the players, and parents who offer such strong support. The next JDS on the tournament calendar is May 20 and 21 at Noosa. 4 Elite Tennis International ISSUE 14, MAY 2017 CLAY COURT TENNIS FITNESS: Although clay is a lower-impact game, the long rallies mean you must be in top condition. Aerobic capacity is needed for maximum endurance, with intermittent bursts of speed calling on your anaerobic system as well. VARIETY: Playing on clay gives you a chance to use every shot in your repertoire. Cross-courts, dropshots, slices and topspin groundstrokes are essentials, as is ball placement. PATIENCE: The slowness of clay, see picture, lends itself to a different mind set. Instead of relying on your hard-court ideals stick to a cross-court game plan and wait for the open court to appear before pulling the trigger. SLIDE: Sliding on clay is imperative. It takes a little getting used to at first, but is an effective way to slow momentum and maximize balance. Try sliding on a smooth surface at home wearing socks. Notice how the pros do it using the toe of their back foot to assist the stop and recovery. SPIN: Put topspin on your shots. Topspin works well on clay because the spin bites into the clay for greater affect. Hit this spin deep to ensure a dominating court position and greater time to plan your next move. DROP SHOT: Master the drop shot on clay. A great weapon after your topspin has the opponent way behind the baseline. 4

6 2017 GRAFTON TOUR JUNE 9-12 The First of our organised team trips for 2017 will take us to Grafton, NSW to compete in the 90 th North Coast Tennis Championships. The tournament is a fantastic country tournament with many grades to maximise tennis and appropriate level. It is an AR, Bronze level junior tournament and Silver AMT. TRIP INFORMATION: PLEASE NOTE - FIRST 20 REGISTRATIONS ACCEPTED ONLY Transport will be by bus and departure time is to be 9am from Caloundra Tennis Centre on Friday, June 9. We will return on the evening of Monday June 12 kids will be asked to ring parents when leaving Grafton to confirm arrival time. Accommodation will be at the Grafton Bunkhouse for 3 nights. Bed sheets or sleeping bag/pillow/towel to be brought from home. Meals Breakfasts provided at the motel. Lunches and dinners will need to be purchased. What to Pack- 3/4 sets of tennis clothes, 2 sets casual clothes, hat, sun cream, toiletries, racquets, money, I-Pod etc.. Inclusions: Transport & fuel, accommodation, breakfast, supervision by qualified TA coaches, Pre-Match warm-ups, match analysis. Exclusions: a). ENTRY FEES. As all tournaments are run using the Tournament Planner program players MUST enter themselves in the tournament. This is easy, however if you have not done this previously we are happy to help.
