Interspersed with the findings are comments and graphs designed to give an overview of the first five years of the sport. Participation and Scholarships 1. 3 Total Number of NCAA Beach VB Student-Athletes The first season of collegiate beach volleyball was the spring of 2012 when 15 DI institutions sponsored varsity teams, mostly populated by crossover players from their court teams and coached by the same staff. Five years later, 56 schools fielded squads, 49 in DI, five in DII and two in DIII. # of NCAA Beach Teams The NCAA hosted the inaugural Collegiate Beach Volleyball National Championship in Gulf Shores, Alabama, May 6-8, Eight teams participated in a three-day double round robin team tournament. The event had 8 hours of live television coverage on TruTV and Turner and generated over $100,000 in ticket sales. 12 teams have announced they will begin programs in , and over 50 have reported they are considering adding a beach volleyball team in the next 2-4 years.

This is the same percentage as and indicative of the fact that new programs frequently start with crossover staff and players. Who Coaches the Beach Team? Beach Coach Head Ct Coach Asst Ct Coach The most common model for adding beach volleyball has been to phase the investment in new staff and student-athlete support over a period of years. The five-year graphs on increases in coaching positions and scholarship aid show that the involvement of the court coaching staff is critical at the beginning of the program and generally decreases as resources are added. Crossover participation by student-athletes also decreases over time. At institutions where the beach program is five years old, 77% of the volleyball players participate in only one sport, and almost two-thirds of the beach student-athletes do not play court volleyball in the fall.

The comfort level with the format increases slightly each year. The Future Legislative proposals currently in the pipeline will add one week to the start of the NCAA beach season, add four competition dates in the fall, non-championship season, and provide a 55-day recruiting calendar for beach volleyball coaches to recruit sand events. The NCAA Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship will return to Gulf Shores, Alabama, May 5-7, Bidding is currently underway for host sites for 2018 through For the foreseeable future, the NCAA will offer only a team championship. USA Volleyball has expressed interest in the possibility of hosting a Pairs event that would serve as tryouts to select U.S. teams for their international summer competitions. Their staff is consumed with planning for the 2016 Olympic Games and no firm plans will be forthcoming until the fall of The AVCA has identified three priorities for beach volleyball: 1. Work with USA Volleyball on implementing a post-season Pairs event. 2. When numbers are sufficient, plan end-of-the-year AVCA Beach Volleyball National Championships for NCAA DII and DIII schools, and, add NAIA and NJCAA teams as growth occurs in those sectors. 3. Offer Beach Coaching Seminars for the college community. AVCA will also continue to be a resource for information on program development, funding parameters, and strategies for growth in the college, high school and club sectors.
