No. 4 Buckeyes to Wind Through Windy City Ohio State plays at Lewis and Loyola this week The No. 4 Ohio State University men s volleyball team (11-2) sits atop the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) standings at 4-0 and strays away from home this week to face the next two MIVA teams in line. The Buckeyes face a pair of Top-10 foes in No. 9 Lewis (9-4) and No. 8 Loyola (10-3), both owners of 3-1 conference marks. Thursday (Feb. 22) presents Ohio State with the challenge of the Flyers before taking on the Ramblers 48 hours later on Saturday (Feb. 24). WEEKLY BASICS Thursday, Feb. 22 Romeoville, Ill. The Buckeyes will play eight matches overall during the stretch before returning to the friendly confines of St. John Arena. The home of Ohio State men s volleyball was treated the Buckeyes well over the last 50-plus seasons, serving as the stage for a (.841) all-time home record. HISTORY WITH THE FLYERS AND RAMBLERS The Buckeyes owns an upper hand in the all-time series with both Lewis and Loyola. Ohio State has won 33 of 53 meetings against the Flyers, including a record in Romeoville. The OSU-LU series sits at overall in favor of the Scarlet & Gray, but the Ramblers possess a slight edge in Chicago (13-11). In the last two seasons, Ohio State is 5-0 versus Lewis and 4-0 when facing Loyola. While four of five clashes with the Flyers have gone four or more sets, the Buckeyes have rattled off four straight sweeps during the winning streak over the Ramblers. During that stretch which dates back over two years (Feb. 15, 2016), the Buckeyes were the No. 1-slotted team nearly half the time (16 of 35 polls). Last time outside the Top-10: April 4, 2015 Last time unranked (Top-15): Final poll of 2014 SUNNY STEERING THE OFFENSE Sanil Sunny Thomas is the new sheriff in town when it comes to running the Ohio State offense, taking control of full-time setting duties this season. The junior from Tinley Park, Ill., is averaging assists per set through the first 13 matches, the second-highest average in the country. 1

2 HANES EMERGING AS LETHAL WEAPON Redshirt freshman Jake Hanes is making waves nationally as one of the NCAA s top offensive forces through the first seven weeks of the season. He has stepped into the role of opposite hitter vacated by All- American Miles Johnson s graduation, filing in admirably. Hanes entered the week pacing the conference and among the Top-15 nationally for kills, points and aces: 3.93 kills/set (5th in NCAA), 4.69 points/set (4th),.48 aces/set (13th). NO ONE COMPARES WITH NICOLAS SZERSZEN Senior Buckeye Nicolas Szerszen is not only the NCAA s active career leader in kills and service aces, he s leaps and bounds ahead of the next closest player. His 1,407 kills are more than 300 clear of secondbest Tanner Syftestad from UC San Diego at 1,085 kills. From the service stripe, Szerszen has sniped the opposition 195 times while King College s Nick Drooker ranks second at 157 career service aces. KINGS OF THE MIVA Ohio State has hoisted a league-best 26 MIVA regular season trophies, followed by Ball State and its 21 championships. HANES PERFORMANCE EARNS RECOGNITION Redshirt freshman Jake Hanes was named both the MIVA Offensive Player of the Week and VolleyMob. com National Player of the Week on Jan. 30 after scorching Saint Francis (Jan. 25) and Penn State (Jan. 28) for 6.42 points per set while attacking.452 for the week. 22 HEAD COACH PETE HANSON Pete Hanson has served as the Ohio State head men s volleyball coach for the last 33 seasons and guided the Buckeyes to three NCAA national titles in the last seven years (2011, 2016, 2017). In three-plus decades at Ohio State, the Flint, Mich., native has posted an overall record of (.672) and (.769) clip in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) matches. The Buckeyes were combined 63-5 (.926) in 2016 and 2017, each ending with celebration under the confetti as national champions. HALL OF FAME HANSON Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame (inducted in 2017) America Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame (inducted in 2015 as one of just 70 members overall at the time of enshrinement) Hanson has been named the National Coach of the Year four times. Volleyball Magazine tabbed him as such in 1998 and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) did so in 2000 before both organizations selected him as the Coach of the Year following Ohio State s 2011 NCAA Championship. He picked up the prestigious AVCA honor once again in Ohio State s 2016 national championship came exactly five years to the date (May 7) after the program s first crown in Furthering the parallel, both titles were also clinched in the same facility, Penn State s Rec Hall. The 17 triumph was witnessed by over 8,000 fans packed into St. John Arena. Hanson corralled his 13th MIVA Coach of the Year recognition in 17 following a 32-2 campaign which ended in not only the NCAA Championship but also a clean sweep of the MIVA regular season and MIVA Tournament titles for the second year in a row. The Buckeye national title in 11 concluded with a five-set victory over UC Santa Barbara. Ohio State went 26-6 and captured the MIVA regular season championship as well that season. Hanson has guided the Buckeyes to 17 MIVA regular season titles overall and made 12 NCAA Tournament appearances. Hanson s squads have racked up 20-or-more wins in 21 of 33 seasons. The Buckeyes have also swept through an undefeated home slate six times under the tutelage of Hanson. Ohio State strung together five consecutive MIVA crowns from The five-year tear ending in a 2011 national championship came with a combined winning percentage of.743 (107-37). Prior to Ohio State, Hanson served two seasons as assistant coach for the University of Wyoming women s volleyball team before becoming the program s head coach in His college career began at Kellogg Community College in Michigan, which he attended for two years. At Kellogg C.C., his team won the National Junior College Athletic Association Championships in 1976 and During the 1976 season he was selected to the N.J.C.A.A. All-America Team. In 1977, he played on the United States team that competed against the Suntory Volleyball Club from Japan and toured across the United States, playing a team from the People s Republic of China. Hanson then transferred to Ball State University, where he played during the 1978 and 1979 seasons, winning the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championship in 1979 and finishing fourth in the NCAA Championships. In both years he was named an All-MIVA selection and was selected as the Most Valuable Player for Ball State. After graduating in 1979 with a degree in natural resources and geology, he stayed at Ball State the next year, serving as an assistant coach. In addition, Hanson has been honored with his selection to various regional and national coaching positions. He was an assistant coach for the 1986 National Sports Festival. The next summer he was the assistant coach at the Olympic Sports Festival for the gold medalist North team. Three of his players participated on teams in the festival. In 1988, he was an assistant coach at the National Elite Junior Training Camp. The following year he worked as the head coach of the East squad at the Olympic Sports Festival. He was an assistant coach for the USA Men s B Team during the summers of 1994 and Hanson assisted the United States Men s Olympic team in Atlanta in He was an assistant coach for the USA team at the World University Games, held in China, in Pete and his wife, Marianne, have two sons John (31) and Phil (29). John is an Ohio State graduate and is in the process of completely a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering at MIT.
