Reser Stadium [40,409] CORVALLIS Quarterback Brian Johnson and running back Matt Asiata both suffered first half injuries Johnson to his throwing arm and Asiata to a broken leg and Oregon State pulled away for a 24-7 victory. Utah scored first when Johnson found Brent Casteel for a 36-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Sophomore cornerback Sean Smith set up the score with an interception on the OSU 34-yard line. Smith, in his first career start, finished with two picks. Utah rolled up 151 yards in the fourth quarter nearly matching its production from the previous three quarters combined (162 yards) and first-time starting quarterback Tommy Grady lofted a 34-yard touchdown pass to Derrek Richards to narrow the gap to The Utes unsuccessfully tried a two-point conversion and Air Force got some breathing room by scoring a field goal on its next series. Grady and the Utes responded with a 79-yard drive that ended six inches short of a chance to go for two and send the game into overtime. Mack had his best game ever and the best game by a Ute back this year rushing for 107 yards and a touchdown. In his first start, free safety Robert Johnson grabbed two interceptions, broke up a pass and forced a fumble into the end zone for a touchback. The Utes accumulated 514 yards of total offense 373 in the second half while holding the Aztecs to just 211 total yards. The Utes held a slim 9-7 lead in the first half after turning the ball over on the SDSU 2-yard line and settling for a short field goal on their first two possessions. Louie Sakoda scored all of Utah s first half points, making field goals of 32, 51 (a career long) and 27 yards. San Diego State led briefly, 7-6, before Sakoda s 27-yard boot with 0:05 left in the half put the Utes up for good. Darrell Mack rushed for 131 yards including an 80-yard first quarter and caught six balls for 45 yards and a touchdown.
