Reser Stadium [40,409] CORVALLIS Quarterback Brian Johnson and running back Matt Asiata both suffered first half injuries Johnson to his throwing arm and Asiata to a broken leg and Oregon State pulled away for a 24-7 victory. Utah scored first when Johnson found Brent Casteel for a 36-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Sophomore cornerback Sean Smith set up the score with an interception on the OSU 34-yard line. Smith, in his first career start, finished with two picks. Johnson completed 8-of-13 passes for 119 yards (1 TD) before leaving the field on Utah s last offensive series of the half. Tommy Grady played the rest of the way completing 9-of-24 passes for 59 yards. Without Asiata (4 rushes for 16 yards), Utah suffered a terrible night rushing gaining just 18 yards. Utah rolled up 151 yards in the fourth quarter nearly matching its production from the previous three quarters combined (162 yards) and first-time starting quarterback Tommy Grady lofted a 34-yard touchdown pass to Derrek Richards to narrow the gap to The Utes unsuccessfully tried a two-point conversion and Air Force got some breathing room by scoring a field goal on its next series. Grady and the Utes responded with a 79-yard drive that ended six inches short of a chance to go for two and send the game into overtime. Two Ute receivers finished with career highs in receiving yards: Derrek Richards (109) and Bradon Godfrey (83). Mack had his best game ever and the best game by a Ute back this year rushing for 107 yards and a touchdown. In his first start, free safety Robert Johnson grabbed two interceptions, broke up a pass and forced a fumble into the end zone for a touchback. The Aggies drew first blood taking a 7-0 first-quarter lead but Utah evened the score on the next possession when Brian Johnson found freshman Jereme Brooks in the end zone on a 22-yard pass play. Richards put the Utes ahead a lead they never relinquished with his career-long punt return. Utah State got within four (14-10) on a field goal before Utah reeled off 10 unanswered points to take control. Johnson threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Marquis Wilson, and Louie Sakoda finished off a 17-point second quarter with a 31-yard field goal. Mack put the Utes on the board in the third quarter on a 3-yard run and Sakoda booted a 39-yard field goal in the fourth. Utah State scored with 2:33 remaining, then recovered an onside kick and advanced to the Utah 13-yard line before Tate caught an Aggie receiver behind the line on fourth and five. LOUISVILLE Brian Johnson and Darrell Mack put on a dazzling offensive show to lead Utah to a shootout win over Louisville in a nationally televised ESPN game. In his best outing since injuring his knee in November of 2005, Johnson completed 24-of-31 passes for 312 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a touchdown. Mack rushed for a careerhigh 163 yards the most by a Ute since 2003 and three touchdowns. Utah held Louisville s high-octane offense to one touchdown in the first half and led 27-7 But the Cardinals quadrupled their yardage in the second half and closed to within six points (41-35) at the 3:33 mark. Louie Sakoda s 46-yard field goal made it a two-possession game with a minute remaining and Louisville ran out of time on the Utah 30-yard line. The Utes accumulated 514 yards of total offense 373 in the second half while holding the Aztecs to just 211 total yards. The Utes held a slim 9-7 lead in the first half after turning the ball over on the SDSU 2-yard line and settling for a short field goal on their first two possessions. Louie Sakoda scored all of Utah s first half points, making field goals of 32, 51 (a career long) and 27 yards. San Diego State led briefly, 7-6, before Sakoda s 27-yard boot with 0:05 left in the half put the Utes up for good. Darrell Mack rushed for 131 yards including an 80-yard first quarter and caught six balls for 45 yards and a touchdown. Brian Johnson completed 22-of-29 passes for 220 yards and Corbin Louks threw a touchdown pass on his only attempt. The defense pitched a shutout after SDSU s lone score in the second quarter, with Sean Smith providing a key interception his fourth of the year. Martail Burnett returned one of Utah s four interceptions 55 yards for his first career touchdown to give the Utes a lead late in the first half. Also intercepting passes were RJ Rice, Steve Tate and Robert Johnson. Tate finished with a team-high 12 tackles and a sack. Utah led at the intermission, but neither team could generate much offense in the second half. A scoreless third quarter was followed by a 3-point fourth quarter for both teams. Running back Darrell Mack (100 yards) accounted for all but seven of Utah s rushing yards in his fourth-straight 100-yard game. He also scored the game s first touchdown.
