3 COACHING STAFF Head Coach Rick Rykse Career Record at DU: Office Phone: (231) Address: ASSISTANT Coach Lindsey Finkler Alma Mater: Aquinas College ASSISTANT Coach Shane Balcom RICK RYKSE Rick Rykse begins his 4th year as the head coach for women s volleyball at Davenport University. After a tough first season, the team made significant progress in its third year and is looking to continue building under the direction of Rykse. Prior to coaching at Davenport University, Rick was the head coach at Ravenna High School from , where he led his team to four district titles, three regional titles and two state final appearances. Rick is also the club director and coach for Inside Out Juniors Volleyball Club and is the president/general manager of the Midwest Professional Volleyball Association beach tour. Lindsey Finkler Lindsey begins her fourth year as the top assistant coach for the Panthers volleyball program and brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the court. Finkler graduated from Aquinas College with a degree in Business Administration and Sport Management. She played on the volleyball team at Muskegon Community College for two years, before transferring for her final two years at Aquinas. Lindsey also has coaching experience at the high school and club levels. Currently, Lindsey works as an admissions representative at Davenport University and lives in Conklin, MI with her daughter Kaylee. SHANE BALCOM Shane begins his second season on the Panthers bench and will assist in the day-today operations of the team including the junior varsity team. 4 2009 SEASON PREVIEW 2009 WHAC OPPONENTS The 2009 Season will be the fourth year of competition for the Panther Volleyball Team. After a season that concluded with a first round loss in the WHAC Tournament, the Lady Panthers are looking to make even greater strides in the 2009 campaign. Some of the highlights for 2008 were a program best 15 wins that included four wins in six matches inside the new DU Student Center. The Lady Panthers also received numerous honors from the WHAC including having two players selected to the WHAC All- Freshman team, Libero of the year honors and one player named 1st Team All-Conference. For 2009, Davenport returns 11 players from last year s squad in addition to adding nine new faces to the team. AQUINAS COLLEGE CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY Location: Grand Rapids, Mich. Juniors Kayla Vandermolen (Cedar Springs, Mich.) was named 1st Team All-WHAC in 2008 and the 5 10 setter holds every DU setting record. Kayla also is the career leader in digs at Davenport and is 2nd in career aces. Kayla provides leadership both on and off the court and will once again be a team captain in Autumn Williams (Fruitport, Mich.) is a player of many positions. In 2008 she played as a Middle Hitter, Right Side, and Defensive Specialist. Currently, Autumn is 1st in career blocks and aces and 2nd in career kills and digs for the Panthers. This season, Autumn will also serve as one of our three captains. Joyce Larioza (Fowlerville, Mich.) is a middle hitter who finished 2nd on the Panther team in hitting percentage and 2nd in total blocks in Kendra Stieg (Reed City, Mich.) and Carrie Bass (Grand Rapids, Mich.) will also return as juniors in 2009 and will provide much needed depth for a still young Panthers lineup. Also joining the Panthers lineup as a transfer will be Yurika Toyodome of Alfred State CC. Sophomores Megan Vanderhyde (Sparta, Mich.) and Heather Deal (Ravenna, Mich.) both return on the outside after starting almost every match as true freshman. Vanderhyde earned All-WHAC Freshman Team honors and broke the school record for kills in a season in Deal, who finished second on the team in kills last year, gained valuable playing experience and will look to use that during her sophomore campaign. Courtney DePriest (Grand Rapids, Mich.), who was named the 2008 WHAC Libero of the Year, returns to lead the defensive unit for DU and will be joined by returning middle hitter Lindsey Hooker (Caledonia, Mich.). The Lady Panthers also welcome sophomore transfers Ashley Penny (Wayne State), Shauna Sochor (Albion), and Gina Turner (Aquinas). Freshman With an already young lineup to take the floor in 2009, the Lady Panthers added some key pieces in their incoming freshman class. DU was able to sign three outside hitters in Brittany Bott from Unity Christian HS, Kassie Graves of White Cloud and Amy VanEns of Lowell, one middle hitter in Hannah Meyers of Muskegon and a right side/setter in Kelse Moon from Fremont for All five players will be looked at immediately to step in and help the Panthers in their inaugural year. Splits, Splits, Splits!! After posting a split on Saturday of the UM Dearborn Early Bird, the Lady Panthers followed suit on Friday and Saturday of their next two tourney s at Cornerstone and at Madonna. Heather Deal garnered All-Tournament honors at the Julie Martin Memorial hosted by Madonna University as she led DU to an overall record of 5-7 at weekend s end. NCAA D2 Foes Too Much Playing intrastate powerhouses Grand Valley State and Hillsdale proved to be a huge learning experience as two of the top 10 teams in NCAA Division II showed the young Panthers exactly where they need to get to compete with some of the best teams in the country. Student Center Grand Opening In the first athletic event ever played in the brand new DU Student Center, the Panthers dropped a tough match to Indiana Tech on October 21, They would go on to post their first win on their first ever true home court only two days later when they downed UM Dearborn in four sets. First Live Broadcast Captures Historic Win over Cornerstone DU Athletics and DU Volleyball made history on November 4th when the Lady Panthers posted their first ever win over cross-town rival Cornerstone University with a thrilling 3-2 come from behind victory. The match was also broadcast live over the internet as DU posted a win in the fifth and deciding set. New School Records The 2008 Lady Panthers set many school records as a team and as individuals. The 15 wins broke the previous seasons record of 11 and DU also posted six wins in WHAC play. Megan Vanderhyde broke the single season record for kills with 447 and Courtney DePriest posted 627 digs on the year. WHAC Recognizes DU Volleyball Sophomore Kayla Vandermolen and freshman Courtney DePriest headlined the All-Conference squads for Davenport as Vandermolen became the first ever 1st team All- WHAC performer for DU and DePriest brought home the Libero of the Year award as a true freshman. Megan Vanderhyde also made the All-Freshman Team. Olympic Gold Medalists Meet Panthers On January 24, the Davenport Volleyball team had the chance to meet and hang out with 2008 Beijing Gold Medalists Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser. At Davenport we strive to provide the best athletic health care for our student athletes. The athletic training program at Davenport University is under the direct supervision of team physician, Aryn Johnson, DO. If a student-athlete is injured while participating in a supervised intercollegiate sport activity they will be evaluated by a certified athletic trainer, provided immediate care, and referred for follow-up care, when necessary. The athletes at Davenport are well serviced by our Sports Medicine Team Wendi Corelli MS, ATC - Head Athletic Trainer Jeff Harmsen- Assistant Athletic Trainer Dr. Aryn Johnson, DO - Team Physician Dr. Johnson practices Sports Medicine in Caledonia, Michigan with Metro Health. This is his second year as the team physician for Davenport University. Dr. Aryn Johnson graduated from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine with a DO and has been in the profession for 5 years. Dr. Tom Matelic, MD - Team Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Matelic specializes in the prevention and treatment of injuries in athletes of all ages. His orthopedic specialties are sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery, total joint reconstruction and ligament reconstruction and repair. Dr. Matelic is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with additional fellowship training in orthopedic sports medicine. Dr. Matelic works with Orthopedic Associates in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Sports Information The Davenport University Sports Information Office is committed to serving the Panthers athletic department, DU fans, the media, opponent information departments, and anyone who desires information about the University.
