1 uary - March 01 A Newsletter and Programme in Middlesbrough and of Health Walks Redcar & Cleveland Hello everyone! May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year and lots of lovely health walks for 01! A wonderful development in 013 was when a number of our walkers decided to organise themselves a trip to the Lake District for a few days of guided walks and socialising. This was done completely independently and special thanks go out to Helen Chilvers who arranged the whole itinerary, from travelling to booking the hotel venue near Buttermere. Everyone had a great time and, not surprisingly, they plan to do it all over again in May. Other groups have also arranged their own bus outings to venues for a walk and a nice day out. This just goes to show that the socialising aspect of taking part in our health walks is as important to many of our participants as are the physical benefits. Long may the trend continue! Don Burluraux Health Walks Co-ordinator Health Improvement Service South Tees NHS Foundation Trust Langbaurgh House Bow Street Guisborough TS1 7AA Tel: Mobile: don.burluraux@stees.nhs.uk Physical Inactivity is becoming a Global Pandemic! Recent studies show that physical inactivity - which is when people are not sufficiently active to stay in good health - is becoming a public health problem comparable to smoking, responsible for 17% of premature deaths in the UK. One in three adults in England do not even manage 30 minutes of physical activity a week. Being inactive increases the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke and diabetes by -30% and can shorten your lifespan by three to five years. If everyone in England were sufficiently active, nearly 37,000 deaths a year could be prevented. Low fitness levels are responsible for more preventable deaths than obesity, smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes. Sir Liam Donaldson, the former Chief Medical Officer of England, once stated, If a medication existed which had a similar effect to physical activity, it would be regarded as a wonder drug or miracle cure. Walking is the most likely way all adults can achieve the recommended levels of physical activity - i.e. a minimum of 150 minutes a week. So why not join us rather than be part of the above disturbing statistics.
