2 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND PRESIDENT During 2017, you joined supporters from throughout Georgia to help inspire our vision making our streets and communities great places to walk to become everyone s vision. The second annual Georgia Walks Summit, which we held in Augusta, enabled us to build and strengthen partnerships throughout the state. We also provided workshops that helped transportation professionals learn how to design for pedestrian safety. Yet all too often, walking can be fatal. Sadly, 258 people lost their lives while walking in Georgia, the highest in history. We re partnering with the Georgia Department of Transportation and others to reverse that trend. The Pedestrian Safety Action Plan we developed, which GDOT recently approved, provides detailed strategies and action steps. We worked tirelessly last year to pull Atlanta s sidewalk spending out of the shadows. Facts we uncovered, together with new leadership at City Hall, make us optimistic about achieving the policy and funding changes needed to address the enormous backlog of broken sidewalks. These are just a few of the issues you addressed when you partnered with PEDS to save lives, encourage people to use their feet, and create walk-friendly communities. 3 We partnered with Shepherd Center patients on a roll that increased attention to the impact of broken sidewalks and dangerous ramps on people who use wheelchairs. We worked diligently to help prevent government officials from continuing to ignore sidewalks like this. I just want to be able to get to work and run errands safely, James Curtis said. I don t think that s too much to ask for.

4 Safe access to transit is a top priority. We strengthened partnerships with local, regional and state agencies to help make that a reality. We audited the availability of safe crossing treatments at bus stops on Covington Highway and other state roads. Participating on stakeholder and advisory committees enables us to influence local, state and regional transportation priorities.

5 Walking clubs we created now located throughout the region are motivating older adults to walk together, walk more and have fun. PEDS Board Chairman and Norcross City Council member Andrew Hixson inspires residents to enjoy Walktober.
