5 Objective You are about to embark on a trip through the heart of Boston to the city s Museum of Science. You will begin your journey at Beatty Hall, a building on the campus of Wentworth Institute of Technology. Your trip will take you across the city by foot and by the T, Boston s subway system. On your trip, you will witness the Wentworth campus and the sprawling underground railway of the Green Line. Your final destination will be the Museum of Science, Boston, situated on the Charles River. Enjoy your trip! Figure 1 The Museum of Science from the Charles River Materials/Equipment Required $4.00 standard fare per person for a roundtrip on the T (or use a prepaid CharlieCard) One ticket per person to the Museum of Science (can be bought for $5 at the Office of Student Leadership Programs at Wentworth) Technical Instructions Optional Jacket/umbrella (depending on weather conditions) Backpack or bag Camera Extra money to buy food and gifts at the museum Safety Precautions 1. Always look both ways when crossing a street or crossing train tracks. 2. Obey traffic signals. 3. Obey MBTA, police, and museum officials. 4. Keep aware of your surroundings and stay out of unsafe areas. 5. Have a cell phone on you in case of an emergency. 4
6 Instructions Step One Start at the first floor entrance of Beatty Hall on the campus of Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston (Figure 2). Take a left and walk down the stairs (Figure 3). Figure 2 Outside Beatty Hall, First Floor Figure 3 Walking down Beatty stairs Step Two Looking ahead, there will be a path with a fence on the left and a brick building on the right (Figure 4). Follow this path and continue walking down it when you see the fence on the left and a parking lot on the right (Figure 5). Figure 4 Path after stairs Step Three Continue walking straight as you pass by the C-Store and the Office of Public Safety on the left (Figure 6). 7 Step Four When you reach the Leopard statue, take a left onto Huntington Avenue (Figure 7). Continue down the sidewalk for about 100 yards (Figure 8). Figure 7 In front of the leopard statue Step Five After the first brick building on the right and before the corner of the block, cross the street via the crosswalk. Be sure to look for traffic before crossing (Figure 9). Figure 8 Walk down Huntington Avenue Step Six Make your way to the Longwood T station after crossing the street. 8 Step Seven A Green Line trolley will arrive shortly. Stay behind the yellow line as the trolley enters the station (Figure 12). Enter the trolley when the doors open and pay the fare with a prepaid CharlieCard or two dollars cash. Figure 12 Green Line trolley arrives at the station Step Eight Stay on the Green Line trolley for the next 11 stops after departing Longwood station. Take a seat if one is available or hold on to the rails (Figures 13 and 14). Figure 13 On the Green Line Figure 14 On the Green Line Step Nine When the trolley arrives at the Science Park/West End station, get off. Take the exit towards Charles River Park (Figure 15). 9 Step Ten Cross the street on the pedestrian crosswalk at the Storrow Drive intersection (Figure 16). Looking back, the Science Park station is now on the opposite side of the street (Figure 17). Figure 17 Science Park station Figure 16 Storrow Drive intersection Step Eleven Continue down Monsignor Obrien Highway for about 350 yards (Figure 18). A Massachusetts State Police Station will be on the left. Passing it, proceed onto a small bridge over the Charles River. A drive thru entrance for vehicles will be visible along with a very conspicuous model of the Tyrannosaurus Rex (Figures 19 and 20). Figure 20 The Museum of Science 8

11 Glossary Beatty Hall building number 8 at Wentworth; the building in front of the Quad Charles River a major river in Massachusetts which separates Boston from Cambridge; empties out into Boston Harbor Green Line a light rail/streetcar system which is part of the T ; the oldest section of Boston's subway MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transport Authority/the T ) the Boston area transport system which runs public transportation ranging from commuter trains to buses and boats Museum of Science, Boston a museum in Boston dedicated primarily to science; hosts a series of changing exhibits; home to a planetarium and the Mugar Omni Theater, a five-story tall dome in which "larger-than-life" images and movies are shown T Station a designated commuter area in which the subway trains of Boston stop to pick up passengers Tyrannosaurus Rex a large carnivorous bipedal dinosaur thought to have existed in the Cretaceous Period 10
