3 ON DECEMBER 16 TH 2005, THE NEW YORK TIMES REVEALED A SECRET PROGRAM BY THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION. IT INVOLVED THE WARRENTLESS WIRETAPPING OF AMERICANS CALLING FOREIGN COUNTRIES THE WIRETAPS WERE NOT AUTHORIZED BY THE FISA COURT.

4 FOLLOWING THE ABUSES OF THE NIXON ADMINISTRATION CONGRESS PASSED THE FORIGN INTELLIGENCE SERVICE ACT (FISA). IT FORBID THE GOVERNMENT FROM WIRETAPPING PHONES WITHOUT EXPRESS CONSENT FROM THE FISA COURT.

14 IN OCTOBER 2007, THE WASHINGTON POST REVEALED THAT VERIZON HAD TURNED CUSTOMER PHONE AND INTERNET RECORDS 720 TIMES WITHOUT A COURT ORDER FROM IT TURNED OVER RECORDS 94,000 TIMES WITH A SUBPOENA DURING THE SAME PERIOD.

For the customers of these companies, it means that the government has detailed records of calls they made across town or across the country to family members, co-workers, business contacts and others.

16 ACCODING TO USA TODAY ( ) With access to records of billions of domestic calls, the NSA has gained a secret window into the communications habits of millions of Americans. Customers' names, street addresses and other personal information are not being handed over as part of NSA's domestic program, the sources said. But the phone numbers the NSA collects can easily be cross-checked with other databases to obtain that information.

Verizon, BellSouth and AT&T are the nation's three biggest telecommunications companies; they provide local and wireless phone service to more than 200 million customers. According to multiple sources, Qwest declined to participate because it was uneasy about the legal implications of handing over customer information to the government without warrants.

The cases against them were eventually dismissed, because none of the plaintiffs could actually prove they had actually been tapped. Congress also granted immunity to phone companies for ther participation in the program.

44 Four Western hostages held by the Islamic State in Syria were reportedly subjected to waterboarding, a key Bush-era torture method that simulates drowning. The Washington Post reports the hostages were waterboarded "several times" early in their captivity, including the murdered American journalist James Foley.
