Review of 2017/18 Season SJR relatively happy with the overall season; only disruptions were the exceptional wintery weather for one week plus the Rochdale versus Spurs replay which had an impact on the completion of mini league fixtures (see later for circumstances allowing postponement of matches). Dave Hanson (Royle Bowling Club) mentioned Royle Bowling Club wanting to postpone the KO final (see later section). All monies received and nothing owing 4. Accounts & Finances as at start of season - September 2018 Balance at start of last season Balance at end of last season Money spent as per recommendations from last season. There was a discussion later about trophies and what the league should pay for in future. League Fees proposed to increase to Ê This was accepted after discussion please refer to special section on future trophies (summary of last season s finances below).

RDQL Accounts Season Date Narrative Credit Debit 23/9/17 Opening balance (c/f from 2016/17 season) Season 15 x Team 70 1, Season A4 paper plus any extra envelopes Season Toner/Ink for ET-2550 printer Season Deliveries and promotional trips Season Suppers (2 x Finals / Presentation Evening) Season Trophies (all via BKC Trophies) Totals 1, , Final Balance League Fees Following a discussion about trophies (later in the meeting) it was proposed and accepted that league fees will be increased to for the season which will allow for the purchase of re-useable trophies. Please note that cash, cheques (payable to Peter Corby) or bank transfers (Peter Corby / ) are all acceptable. The balance from last season has already been transferred into PC s account 6. Season duration start, end, breaks After discussion and views exchanged the following was agreed: similar duration to last season; two week break at Christmas last league match on the 19 th December / 26 th December and 2 nd January 2019 off / matches resume on the 9 th January If the Horse and Farrier and/or The Bamford join the league then could have between teams so agreed that SJR will look at optimum mini league options to maximise matches played and minimise free weeks. Friendly sets / warm up matches for 19 th and 26 th September 2018 with the first league match proper on either the 3 rd October or the 10 th October 2018 (note that 4 teams have requested either an away match (2) or a free date (2) on the 3 rd October 2018 if possible). With Easter falling late next year it is anticipated that the season end will be a similar time to this hopefully to coincide with the start of the bowling season. Please note that the schedule and fixtures expected to be available, distributed and published w/c 17 September Please note that in the current rules/guidelines it also states For the past few seasons the league has operated on a divisional basis determined by previous performances and not geographical location. A 2 up 2 down rule has been used when formulating the divisions for the following season. Normally, new teams will start in the bottom division and all divisions adjusted accordingly. However, if there are several new teams and/or a team or teams dropping out it may be necessary to adjust the divisions in order to balance the league. This will be done at the discretion of the league organiser and it may be that the 2 up 2 down rule may not operate.

7. Naming of the plate / cup The KO Cup to be named for the 2018/19 season as the Joe Coone Memorial Cup in honour of Joe who sadly passed away during the 2017/18 season AND who along with his wife Anne were landlord and landlady of the Merry Monk pub, noted for their fabulous award winning suppers for both home and visiting teams (quiz, darts, dominoes, crib etc.) - (post AGM note that permission received from his widow Anne Coone who would also like to be invited to the presentation evening). This year s Plate to be named in honour of Loretta Greenhalgh (ex. Woolworths SCC) who sadly passed away earlier this year and was a quiz regular for many seasons. It will be named as the Loretta Greenhalgh Memorial Plate for the 2018/19 season (note that permission granted by her son Frank Greenhalgh) 8. Quiz Format do you want to see any changes? It was made clear by SJR that this year s RDQL would be a dual effort. Peter Corby would be doing all the questions and gallons (one exception would be the two warm up sets that SJR would be providing for those matches played on the 19 th and 26 th September 2018) as well as the scheduling of venues for the KO and Plate finals, the pairs competition and the presentation night, AND arranging for food/buffets for the presentation night and KO/Plate finals in addition to the end of season trophies. SJR will be doing the initial divisions, fixtures and overall season schedule as well as receiving results, providing results, tables, etc. to Steve Ashworth (website), Peter Corby (for hard copy in question sets) and individuals via . For clarification contact details are as follows: Simon Roberts: e: rdql.info@yahoo.com m: Peter Corby: e: arthurramsbottom@hotmail.com m: (although this is one of three mobile numbers I have for PC so will get him to confirm on his return from Hungary) There was a lively discussion with PC about his question trends and favourites (e.g. Bob Dylan, Terry Pratchett and capital cities), his overall question balancing and length of some of his questions (especially film based questions). I m sure that he took everything on board and will appreciate constructive comments as the season progresses. There were no proposed changes to the quiz format or the season schedule 9. RDQL website continue with current? Surprisingly there are several individuals who do not realise that there is a new website developed FREE by Steve Ashworth (Spotland Club) Its url is: and it contains a complete set of information from last year plus all this year s information will be made available as soon as it is ready and I forward it to Steve. There was a discussion about RDQL historical information, creating a roll of honour and generally expanding the website. Agreed that it would be useful and that Steve, PC, SJR, Mark Preston will look into this A definite YES for further website development, Thanks to Steve 10. Two refresher / warm up sets (quiz / gallon) on Wednesday the 19 th and 26 th September 2018 Any teams requiring a set to let SJR know who wants a set(s) and who they will be playing where applicable. These sets can either be a hard copy set delivered by the Wednesday in question or an electronic set ed on the Thursday following the scheduled quiz.

11. Trophies general discussion Another lively discussion about trophies, costs, roll of honour, RDQL history, etc. The following represents the general consensus: Divisional League Winners Trophy: 2 x large re-usable shields, handed back and on at the end of each season Divisional Gallon Winners Trophy: 2 x large re-useable shields, handed back and on at the end of each season Plate Trophy leave as is, usually a memorial trophy (winners and runners up) Knockout Cup leave as is (winners and runners up) Strongest Team trophy leave as is Pairs / Presentation night winners / runners up only, no 3 rd / 4 th place? Look at options of replacing with a single re-useable winners shield similar to divisional trophies Special / humorous trophies (up to PC / reintroduced by SJR for 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons) which are dependent upon what happens throughout the season as well as feedback from teams and individuals. 12. Venues PC to investigate neutral venues to hold Plate / Knockout finals, pair s competition, and presentation night. Offers already from Woolworths SSC, Norden Bowling Club, Spotland Club and Lancashire Fold 13. Any other business Some of the following items were discussed throughout the evening but have been condensed and assembled under the AOB section League Rules: These have always been available via the RDQL website. SJR revised and updated these at the start of last season and PC will be doing so again to reflect the current season Postponement of matches: The current rules state the following: Teams should generally try to avoid postponements wherever possible as re-arranged games can and do lead to complications. However, it is appreciated that there may be occasions where it is not possible to complete a game on the specified date. Clearly adverse weather can affect fixtures and events such as funerals of team members are another example. IF a team does wish to call off and re-arrange fixture then the league organiser should be contacted as soon as possible to discuss the reasons and make alternative arrangements. It should be stressed that shortages of players due to holidays would not generally be a sufficient cause for postponement. Usually there would be sufficient opportunity in the later stages of the season to re-arrange games; but in the unlikely event that a fixture cannot be fulfilled by a team or teams before the season ends then the RDQL organiser will investigate and make a ruling / decision (rule change for the 2017/18 season) During the season there were three re-arranged league games which were played at the end of the season plus there was the final of the knockout where the Royle Bowling Club wanted to postpone because they were struggling to raise a team (Easter holidays). SJR has every sympathy with Dave Hanson and the RBC team because earlier in the season they had a match against them postponed and in my opinion unless exceptional circumstances apply failure to play a fixture on a scheduled night should result in forfeiting the match. It is up to the teams and individuals to suggest a change in rules. However I would like to stress that the RDQL is supposed to operate as a fun and friendly league played in the true spirit of quizzing.

Starting matches at 8.30pm: This was proposed and voted on with the vast majority opting to keep the 8.45pm start. It should be noted that several teams (Comrades A included) still thought that matches had to start by 9.00pm! Are suppers compulsory?: Jean from The Strolling Players wanted to find this out and asked if all teams wanted to stop making suppers. It appears that the Roebuck isn t willing or able to provide the quiz team with suppers, so Jean makes them every other week. The current league rules/guidelines state: Although it is not compulsory home teams are expected to provide sandwiches or similar light refreshments at the end of the quiz. Wherever possible vegetarians and vegans should be catered for. If a team has special dietary requirements then they should let their opponents know at least 5 days before the match (otherwise, you get what you are given ). Although there was a lot of sympathy for Jean the majority of teams wanted to continue providing suppers. The 30 second rule: This old chestnut was raised by MP (Mark Preston - I believe for the 7 th consecutive year) as he still feels that this rule is being blatantly ignored and abused, especially against the Blue Pits Rovers. I would like to remind MP that the RDQL was developed to be a fun and friendly league played in the true spirit of quizzing and so long as the time allowed is close to 30 seconds and is consistently the same for both teams (10 seconds for a pass over to an incorrect or no answer) then that should be OK. In the current rules the following is stated Consistency in Timing is a key factor in the both the success and the equality of the quiz and the timing values of 30 seconds for a question and 10 seconds for a pass over should be adhered to (this was emphasised by several teams at the AGM held on the 13/9/2017). PC will ensure that reminders and revised rules are sent to all teams Converting old / archived quiz information: In order to develop a historical roll of honour it may be beneficial to try to convert quiz data kept by SJR and MP in their respective tenures as RDQL organisers and question compilers/setters. Steve Ashworth volunteered to look into this and there should be some spare money in the kitty because the website hosting currently used is FREE. Post AGM note: SJR to also talk with BKC Trophies (used for at least 28 of the last 32 years) to see if they have any historical paperwork which may help. 14. Meeting close and payment of league fees: This was handled by PC no information / updates to report Many thanks - good luck to all teams for the 2018/19 season!
