3 SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC vs SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES CENTURYLINK FIELD, Seattle, Wash. March 14, 2015 (WEEK 2, MLS Game #14) 7 p.m. PT (KCPQ-13 FOX; CSN-CA) A Western Conference test is head on Saturday evening when Seattle Sounders FC continue their season-opening homestand by entertaining the San Jose Earthquakes at CenturyLink Field. Sounders FC began the new season in style, strolling to a 3-0 home win against MLS Cup finalist New England Revolution. The Earthquakes are facing their second consecutive road match to start the year, coming off a last-gasp 1-0 loss at FC Dallas last weekend. REFEREE: Baldomero Toledo. Sounders FC haven t scored a goal on their last three visits to northern California, since a 2-1 loss at Buck Shaw Stadium in Seattle last won at San Jose in 2010; Sounders FC have two wins and a draw in the last three meetings at CenturyLink Field. Coaches record: Sigi Schmid vs. SJ: P36 W16 L14 D6 Dominic Kinnear vs. SEA: P9 W3 L4 D2 SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC Seattle Sounders FC kicked off their new campaign in impressive fashion, rolling to a 3-0 win against the New England Revolution on Sunday evening at CenturyLink Field. Sounders FC are atop the Western Conference, one of four teams with maximum points after one match. LAST MATCH Sounders FC opened the scoring in the 25th minute after Clint Dempsey was taken down in the New England box by Revs winger Juan Agudelo, and referee Juan Guzman pointed to the spot. Dempsey fired his spot kick attempt past New England 'keeper Bobby Shuttleworth into the right side of the goal. Seattle doubled the lead in the 41st minute after Dempsey found newly acquired right back Tyrone Mears streaking up the right sideline on a Sounders counterattack. Mears then lofted a pinpoint cross to a leaping Obafemi Martins, who headed home the header with power from the center of the box. Sounders FC tacked on a third goal following a gorgeous, six-pass buildup that culminated with midfielder Marco Pappa finding Martins, who sprung free virtually uncontested behind New England s backline. The star forward then tapped an easy cross past Shuttleworth to Dempsey, who dribbled calmly into the unguarded New England net. Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid gave Tyrone Mears the start at right back, while Brad Evans moved into a central defense role in his first team of the season. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC (4-4-2): Stefan Frei - Tyrone Mears, Brad Evans, Chad Marshall, Leo Gonzalez - Marco Pappa (Aaron Kovar 90), Micheal Azira, Gonzalo Pineda (Cristian Roldan 90), Lamar Neagle (Andy Rose 83) - Clint Dempsey, Obafemi Martins. TEAM NEWS For the second consecutive year, and the fifth time in seven MLS seasons, Sounders FC opened the season with a victory. It was the third time they ve scored three goals in their MLS season opener. MLS GAME INFORMATION

4 We re pleased that we shut them out, Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid said. That s one of the things we [emphasized] in preseason. We want to do a better job defensively. I told [the team], You know when the bell rings, and they were ready tonight when the bell rang. They were ready to play. Clint Dempsey scored multiple goals in a game for the fifth time in his MLS career, his fourth since his return to the league. He scored multiple goals three times in a four-game stretch last April 5-26 (seven goals over the entire span). Obafemi Martins scored his first goal of the season, after finishing fifth in the MLS Golden Boot race a year ago with 17 goals. The two of them, the stuff they pull off is unique and special. I thought it took them a little bit of time to get in their rhythm, but once they got into their rhythm I thought they were good, Schmid said. Individually they are just so dangerous collectively, it makes it so hard for centerbacks because you don t know when to step up or who to step up to because they take turns dropping into that hole. Said Dempsey: Like I said last season, I love playing with Oba. He s one of the players I ve enjoyed the most playing with in my career because it reminds me of being a kid playing pickup style, just thinking alike and knowing that if you make the right run, he s going to find you. He makes players better around him. I enjoy playing with him, and hopefully we can do this season what we did last season. Brad Evans began the season in central defense, partnering Chad Marshall. In his Sounders FC career, Evans has played all along the midfield, as well as at fullback. As we started to experiment back there, Evans felt more comfortable on the right. Chad says he doesn t care right or left, it doesn t matter to him. They decided [Evans] was more comfortable on the right and [Marshall] played on the left. If Zach Scott were to play tonight, Scott would have played on the left and Marshall would have been on the right, but Marshall feels fairly comfortable either way. Said Evans: [Marshall] knows exactly what he s doing. I don t have to worry about the guy next to me, you know what I mean? So that part of it, worrying about, Is he making the right decision or is he not? It s completely out of my mind. The only thing I need to worry about is what I m doing and listening to him. It makes the transition that much easier. Newcomer Tyrone Mears, who joined the club in the offseason from Bolton Wanderers in England, won the right back job vacated with the transfer of U.S. international DeAndre Yedlin to Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premiership. [Mears] picked some good moments to go forward, and when he goes forward he s generally effective. And tonight was an example of that, Schmid said. I think that s what you re going to see. I thought defensively he was pretty solid back there, and I thought he also helped us with our attack in some vital moments. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes opened their season without a point in cruel fashion, FC Dallas hitting for a late winner for a 1-0 victory on Saturday evening at Toyota Stadium. The Quakes are one of two teams in the Western Conference without a point from their opening match. LAST MATCH The game's only goal came two minutes into second-half stoppage time. Moises Hernandez flighted a ball into the center of the box where Blas Perez was able to flick a header past Quakes goalkeeper David Bingham for the dramatic match-winner. FCD goalkeeper Chris Seitz made two saves in keeping the clean sheet in the season opener. Dominic Kinnear ran out Paulo Renato in central defense in his first match in charge in his return to the club, with nine starters all returnees to the squad. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES ( ): David Bingham - Marvell Wynne, Victor Bernardez, Paulo Renato, Shaun Francis - Sanna Nyassi, Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi, JJ Koval (Adam Jahn 60), Shea Salinas (Innocent Emeghara 89) - Matias Perez Garcia (Fatai Alashe 81) - Chris Wondolowski. TEAM NEWS The Earthquakes saw their winless streak extended to 16 games with the opening day defeat, the longest in club history and now the second-longest in MLS history (Real Salt Lake went 18 games without a victory in ). Sometimes it's a game of mistakes. They made a couple; we made a couple, said Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear. I thought the guys put in a great night of work, created some good chances, but so did they. It was a little bit unfair there in the end, but that's the way the game went. The Quakes also saw their goalless drought extended to 484 minutes dating back to the end of last season. The Quakes did not score a goal in their final four league games last season, their last goal coming Oct. 4, 2014 vs. Portland. Goalkeeper David Bingham made his first league appearance since the final game of the 2013 season when he backstopped a 2-1 win against FC Dallas in his first game as the Quakes No. 1. Bingham had made five league appearances over his first four seasons in MLS. MLS GAME INFORMATION

5 I thought we played a good defensive game for 90 minutes. It was one mistake on my part, and to be fair, it's the first game of the season, said Bingham. We have 33 games left, it doesn't matter. We want to win every game, but we understand there's going to be ups and down throughout the season. We're going to deal with them. Said Kinnear: He's starting. I'm comfortable with him [in the opener]. I'm comfortable with him for the rest of the season. Paulo Renato signed the week before the season opener was given the start in central defense alongside Victor Bernardez as both Clarence Goodson and Ty Harden were unavailable after spending the days leading up to the opener in Washington, D.C. involved in talks on the collective bargaining agreement. Along with Renato, the only other newcomer in the opening day lineup was Sanna Nyassi, who started the match on the right side of the midfield. Nyassi was a Stage 4 Re-Entry Draft pickup from Chicago. We had some chances. I think that as time goes we'll create more, said midfielder JJ Koval. We just have to push forward when we have opportunities and really go for it. MLS GAME INFORMATION

18 SOUNDERS FC vs. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MARCH 14, :00 P.M. PT SOUNDERS FC WEEKLY NOTES DOUBLE TROUBLE Seattle Sounders FC s potent offense picked-up right where it left off last season. After netting a club-record 65 goals in 2014, Sounders FC scored three goals in the season-opener last Sunday in a shutout victory over defending Eastern Conference champion New England Revolution. Forwards Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins put on an impressive display, accounting for all three of the team s goals. Dempsey, who tallied two goals and one assist, began the scoring with a penalty kick in the 25th minute after drawing a foul in the area. His strike to the top right corner of the net made him three-for-three in penalty attempts with the club. In the 41st minute, Martins found the net for the first time of the season with a leaping header on an accurate cross from Tyrone Mears, who was making his MLS debut. The club scored its final goal in the 67th minute after masterful combination play from Dempsey, Martins and Marco Pappa. The trio stretched most of the field on six passes, culminating with Dempsey tapping in the empty-netter. MONUMENTAL COACHING MATCHUP Saturday night s matchup features two of the top three winningest head coaches in MLS history, as Seattle s Sigi Schmid and San Jose s Dominic Kinnear face off for the first time in Schmid, who ranks first all-time in league history with 208 wins, enters his seventh campaign with Sounders FC since taking over the franchise in its inaugural 2009 season. In addition to a record for the Sounders, Schmid has won four Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and a Supporters Shield, while reaching the MLS Cup Playoffs in every season. Kinnear returns to San Jose in 2015 after spending the last nine seasons coaching the Houston Dynamo, leading the club to backto-back MLS Cup championships in 2006 and 2007 and two more MLS Cup Final appearances in 2011 and Kinnear coached the Earthquakes for two years before the club moved to Houston, winning the 2004 Supporters Shield. His 139 career wins rank third in league history. TENACIOUS D After recording 99 saves last season, goalkeeper Stefan Frei was one save shy of recording number 100 with the club. After waiting the entire offseason to reach the triple-digit mark, he was sure to make it count. In the 39th minute, the Swiss shot-stopper made a diving save on a well-struck ball by Kelyn Rowe, denying the Revs on their best opportunity of the match. Minutes later, Seattle pulled away with an Obafemi Martins goal to make it 2-0. It was the only save Frei made all match as Seattle s new-look backline kept the defending Eastern Conference champion at bay. Brad Evans, in a transition from the midfield, made his first career start at centerback, while English rightback Tyrone Mears made his first MLS appearance. Mears also tallied the assist on Martins goal. The duo joins incumbent backline staples Leo Gonzalez, who enters his seventh season at leftback with the club, and centerback Chad Marshall, who became the first three-time winner of MLS Defender of the Year in ROLDAN MAKES PROFESSIONAL DEBUT Rookie midfielder Cristian Roldan made his MLS debut last Sunday when he came on in second-half stoppage time to the roar of the Sounders FC faithful. The 16th overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft played the last two seasons at the University of Washington, where he was a twotime All-Pac-12 First Team selection. As a freshman in 2013, Roldan was named the Soccer America National Freshman of the Year after recording seven goals and five assists. As a sophomore, he was an NSCAA Third Team All-American and led the Huskies to a record. With Sounders FC, Roldan is reunited with Homegrown Player Darwin Jones, his teammate at the UW. A native of Pico Rivera, California, Roldan, was named the 2013 Gatorade National Player of the Year after scoring 54 goals and adding 31 assists for El Rancho High School. The all-time series between the two is tied at Schmid won the most recent matchup last season with a 2-0 home result, while Kinnear came out on top in 2013 with a 3-1 win in Houston. BY THE NUMBERS THROWBACK: 10/14/ League saves Stefan Frei has recorded with Sounders FC 5 - Goals scored all-time in the final 15 minutes by Seattle against San Jose, the most of any 15-minute interval 2 - Number of Sounders FC players to score multiple goals in a season opener (Dempsey, 2, 3/8/2015; Estrada, 3, 3/17/2012) In front of a then-record crowd of 64,140 fans at CenturyLink Field, Sounders FC topped the Earthquakes, 2-1, after scoring two goals in the final eight minutes. The exhilarating match also served as a farewell to Kasey Keller, who appeared in his final home match for the Rave Green. Keller also starred in the highlight of the match with a thrilling, multishot save sequence in the 65th minute. The sequence, which totaled four saves in a matter of seconds, was named Save of the Year by MLS. SoundersFC.com 4

The Seattle Sounders and San Jose Earthquakes traded some shoves, a couple of rough tackles and a goal apiece, ending their Western Conference clash at CenturyLink Field in a 1-1 draw. Without superstar forward Clint Dempsey in the starting line-up, the Sounders used an early second-half goal from replacement Chad Barrett to seize the lead and the momentum. But an equalizer from San Jose s Chris Wondolowski later in the half would ultimately be enough for the Earthquakes to salvage the point. Seattle managed 11 attempts on goal in the first half compared to four for San Jose. However most came from long-distance and were either blocked by San Jose defenders or saved easily by Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch. Seattle did have a good opportunity in the 43rd minute after forward Obafemi Martins unleashed a rocket shot from just outside the San Jose penalty box. But Busch made a diving save to keep the game a scoreless going into the break. The scoreless tie would prove to be short-lived as the Sounders snatched the lead in the opening minute of the second half after Barrett found himself in space off a beautiful through pass from Martins. The veteran forward calmly tucked the ball by Busch and into the San Jose net to give Seattle the 1-0 advantage. But the Earthquakes struck back in the 65th minute after Cordell Cato knocked a cross past Seattle defender DeAndre Yedlin to find Wondolowski poaching on the back post for a simple equalizing tap-in, stunning the crowd of 38,909. Neither side managed to tally a game-winning goal after that, although both teams had chances down the stretch. Dempsey had perhaps the best look deep into stoppage time, managing to get a look at a header off a long pass from Martins. But J.J. Koval was able to do just enough to put Dempsey off, giving Busch a relatively easy save to end the threat and seal the result.
