Ferguson SIR ALEX Ferguson is a man who we all look up to in football. We have to, because he s been at the top of it for so long. He s a fantastic manager and he s transformed Manchester United into the biggest club in the world. The man knows his football, he can t not so it is surprising and a little upsetting to hear him bite at Newcastle. The toon army have always been an arch enemy of United and they had some thrilling title races in the 90s. For Fergie to describe Newcastle as a wee club in the north east is flabbergasting. Pardew s comments after the 4-3 defeat to the Red Devils on Boxing Day must have really rubbed him up the wrong way. His comments can only be described as mind games as he tries to hit back at Pards in the crudest of forms. For the toon army are no wee club. With a core support of 52, 000, Newcastle could boast more of a following than United a club full of glory supporting bandwagon fans. True, they get in excess of 75,000 at home games but Man Utd s attendances would make an interesting read if they were in 15 th place in the league. Newcastle have the 3 rd biggest stadium of all clubs in the Prem, and have only been outside the top flight for two of its seasons and came 5 th last year only three places behind Fergie s men. It makes you wonder who else he regards as a small club, Tottenham, Everton or Villa maybe? One thing for sure though is this If it wasn t for that wee club in the north east taking four points off Man United last season Fergie s men would be champions right now. Newcastle are the world s first green club NEWCASTLE United are now renowned around the world now for a different colour: Green. The Magpies have made positive strides to help the environment in the last few years and have announced they are the first carbon positive football club. Together with GET Solutions and CNI, Newcastle have successfully managed to reduce the environmental impact of the club s operations to zero. In off-setting more carbon than the operation emits it is thought they have become the first football club to be truly carbon positive. There have been small changes to reduce energy consumption. That has been done through boiler optimisation, burner management, lighting upgrades, bore holes, energy monitoring and behavioural changes of staff. Eddie Rutherford, facilities manager at Newcastle said: It s all about saving, saving, saving. The less energy we use, the less carbon we emit and the less impact we have both locally and globally. Now it is hoped Newcastle s move will be followed up and down the country and beyond. Newcastle are the first club to be truly carbon positive

3 28 December 2012 Page 3 The battle of Boxing Day leaves brave Newcastle devastated Manchester United 4 Newcastle United 3 AFTER a brave and battling Boxing Day performance at the theatre of dreams the toon army were left distraught. Newcastle had led the champions three times in a thrilling contest but were undone in the 90 th minute by Javier Hernandez. Both sides went hammer and tong in search of a win in a game which could have gone either way with the Mags hitting the woodwork twice. But the Geordies will be heartbroken to come away with nothing after matching the Red Devils every step of the way. The game exploded into life in only the 4 th minute after a speculative effort by Demba Ba was parried by De Gea right into the path of the on running Perch. Perchy had never scored for Newcastle but by the way he charged onto the loose ball you could have mistaken him for Steven Gerrard in his prime. As the game progressed Newcastle were looking relatively comfortable until a Man Utd free kick led to an equaliser on 25 mins. Newcastle failed to deal with a cross and Danny Simpson was caught ball watching as Jonny Evans slid in to score. His annoyingly over the top celebration hilariously back fired as only three minutes later Danny Simpson s cross come shot was deflected in by the Northern Irishman. The linesman flagged the goal offside believing Papiss Cisse had got the final touch but the decision was eventually overruled and the toon were rightly awarded the goal to the fury of Fergie. Newcastle defended resolutely Match facts Hernandez slots home Man United s winner until the break but Man Utd equalised in the 58 th minute after a weak shot by Evra slid under Krul s body. But the scores weren t level for long as the mighty Mags came bouncing back again. A surging run by former Red Devil Obertan led to an opening for Cisse who belted a left foot shot past the helpless De Gea on 68 mins. The toon knew they were in for a 25 minute onslaught and will be disappointed they conceded only three minutes after Cisse s strike. Van Persie slotted past Krul at the second time of asking in the 71 st minute after Newcastle again failed to clear their lines. Wave after wave of Man Utd attacks then followed but it was Newcastle who came closest. A brilliant dribble by sub Sammy Ameobi led to him hitting the post in the 86 th minute. But that would be the toon s last real chance and in the 90 th minute, they fell behind for the first time. The back four failed to hold their line as a deep cross fell to Hernandez just ten yards from goal. The Mexican slotted home with ease, leaving the Geordies devastated. Scoring 90 th minute goals is a Man Utd trademark and it s one of the reasons they win so many trophies they play to the final whistle. After the game, Sir Alex Ferguson said: December is always a big month and that was a championship performance by us today. The Scot preferred not to praise Newcastle for their battling performance but Alan Pardew said: When you score three goals at Old Trafford you have to get something, the last couple of goals we conceded were poor. We tried to be offensive and take the game to them which we did, it was a great attacking display. You can t do more than score three goals away from home, we should have got something. Toon winger Sammy Ameobi said his team mates were devastated in the dressing room after the defeat. He added: Obviously, we went out and gave our all. It was unfortunate that towards the end, our defending wasn t 100 per cent. It was just unfortunate, really. Everyone was devastated in the changing room, just as much as all the fans. They gave us great support, and it was unfortunate we conceded. Obviously, we played great football, and the goals came from good running and good passing into the box. But we conceded some bad goals as well. Had it not been for that, we could have come away with three points. Follow us on Fergie brands toon a wee club in the north east United gaffer also says he s an emotional guy RED nosed Alex Ferguson has launched an astonishing attack on Newcastle, branding them a wee club. Fergie was reacting to comments made by toon gaffer Pardew in the aftermath of Man Utd s 4-3 win over the Mags on Boxing Day. Pards felt the Scot was lucky not to be sent off in the clash between their sides. The Man Utd gaffer was furious that Newcastle s second goal was allowed to stand after the linesman had flagged for offside. Pards said: I think Mike Dean might feel slightly disappointed he didn't do something about it. I think the pressure that was on him was tough for a referee to take. Sometimes when you reflect on a game you think you might have acted differently. But it's an emotional game and apparently they had a cordial discussion. I've had a few of those myself and sometimes I've ended up in the stands as a result of that cordial discussion. Fergie responded on Friday (28 Dec) saying: I was demonstrative but I was not out of order. The press have had a field day. The only person they have not spoken to is Barack Obama because he is busy. It is unfortunate but I am the manager of the most famous club in the world. Not Newcastle, a wee club in the north east. Fergie and Dean: Pardew thought the Utd gaffer was lucky not to be sent off Everyone knows that I am an emotional guy. But I was not abusive. I shouted Mike over. We walked towards each other. I was only on (the pitch) three or four yards. That has been overplayed. The problem for me is that the profile of this club is huge. Alan Pardew has come out and criticised me. He is the worst at haranguing referees. He shoves them and makes a joke of it. How he can criticise me is unbelievable. He forgets the help I gave him, by the way. In the aftermath of Wednesday s game Ferguson felt that even though Jonny Evans turned the ball into the net himself, Cisse was offside and pulling the defender s shirt leading to the error. He said: If that isn t interfering with play I don t know what is. The law is quite clear, if a player is offside and is interfering with play, then they should be called offside, it was a poor decision. However Mike Dean did not include any wrong doing by Ferguson in his match report stating that the pair had a reasonable and rational discussion. The striker was gutted to be subbed off in last weekend s clash with QPR but afterwards he tweeted: Sometimes frustration is bad. I respect my manager and his decisions. Great win for the club. Cisse then went on to score a fantastic goal at Old Trafford against Man Utd to show he hasn t lost his goal scoring touch. Pardew added: He knows he has the love of the fans on his side, although he has had a disappointing time. I confidently predict Papiss will score more goals in the second half of the season. Santon: We should have won TOON defender Davide Santon has said going back to Newcastle with zero points from Old Trafford was disappointing. The full back said: I think people thought Newcastle would go to Manchester United and come back with zero points, but we really had a chance to win the game. We came here to get the result, but in the final minutes we were beaten and we are really disappointed because we should have won. Inman on fire NEWCASTLE reserve player Bradden Inman has belted in three goals in three games for Crewe Alexandra. The 21-year-old Aussie has found a real purple patch while on loan at the League One Club. When he returns in the New Year, he could make a first team impact.

5 28 December 2012 Page 5 TOTTY Transfer Centre The page bringing you Newcastle s latest and up to date January gossip Toon face stiff competition for Remy signature NEWCASTLE S approach to Loic Remy s representatives has revealed some encouraging news as Marseille are said to be relaxed about the striker s situation. The French giants reportedly do not mind if the striker finds another club this winter or if he stays. The toon will be buoyed by the news as they brace themselves for bids for Demba Ba. However they face stiff competition for Remy s signature after Chelsea, Tottenham, West Ham and Schalke were all credited with an interest. West Ham s interest further credits stories of Andy Carroll s departure back to Liverpool. If Carroll was to return to Liverpool, it would free the former Magpie man for a move back to his native North East. With both striker s valued at around 10m it remains to be seen who Newcastle will want more. It s unlikely Chelsea will follow through with their interest in Remy but with Newcastle s past record for signing French players, whoever they pin point draws extra attention from other clubs. A deal for Remy is expected to drag on, with Marseille prepared to play the waiting game to get the best deal. Debuchy deal could Wenger rules out Ba transfer ARSENAL gaffer Arsene Wenger has ruled out a move for Demba Ba. The striker has been linked with the Gunners after he confessed to Canal+ that Arsenal are a dream club. The North London side are in desperate need of firepower with summer signings Podolski and Giroud struggling to score regularly. Ba (below) however, has been in excellent form scoring 11 goals this season and he has a 7m buyout clause in his contract. Wenger said: I like Demba Ba, yes, if you ask me 'do we sign Demba Ba?' I say no. I don't think [this] is the right place to speak about that, because he plays against us tomorrow. I wouldn't like to put Newcastle or us or him in an uncomfortable position. Ba s stock has risen this season after working hard last summer to improve his all round game. The Senegalese forward has hugely improved his hold up and general centre forward play. Arsenal have also been linked with another loan move for former striker Thierry Henry as they prepare themselves for the possible departure of Theo Walcott. The striker/winger is yet to sign a new deal with the club and has attracted interest from Chelsea and Liverpool. A move for Ba in January is still a possibility for Arsenal, who pride themselves on not over spending and bringing in players at a reasonable cost. In January prices can inflate dramatically, meaning Ba s 7m buyout clause is bound to attract interest and fast. Dawson eyeing Newcastle move still get the go ahead WHILST Mathieu Debuchy revealed last week that he is likely to stay at Lille in January, it is understood a move could still get the go ahead. The Frenchman (below) was dropped from his team s squad last weekend and is unhappy the club didn t sanction a move to Newcastle last summer. Lille are said to be in financial trouble and Debuchy does not want to abandon his team mates. However, the right back said: No one at Lille has told me 'you have to leave in January but if an offer comes along and it would satisfy everyone... MICHAEL Dawson has revealed to close family that he would love to move back to the North East and play for Newcastle. The Spurs centre half (above) was brought up in Leyburn and the Totty exclusively revealed in October that he wishes to return. His situation at Tottenham has not improved since then and it s rumoured he wants a move to the Toon. However Sunderland are said to be chasing his signature so Newcastle will have to act fast to capture him. He doesn t fit into the Mags transfer policy and his wages may be a stumbling block but his Premier League and European experience could be vital for the toon. With Newcastle his first choice of club a move could be done quite quickly. A source in Leyburn told the Totty: He d love to come back up here and see his family more. He d especially love to play for Newcastle, he thinks they re a great club. If he decides to leave Spurs soon, it ll be for a club up here for definite. Dawson s career he s been plagued by injury and has spent most of this season on the subs bench.

The Magpies will have taken heart from their 4-3 defeat against Man Utd on Wednesday but will be disappointed they got nothing from the game. Arsenal will be totally fresh as their match with West Ham was called off on Boxing Day due to a tube strike, meaning they ll fancy their chances against a tiring Newcastle team. Last season, this game ended on a sour note as Tim Krul and Robin Van Persie came to blows so some bad blood can be expected. The game ended 2-1 to Arsenal with the winner coming in the 95 th minute. Newcastle: The toon army travel to North London with nine first team regulars missing. Gutierrez, Ben Arfa, R. Taylor, S. Taylor, Cabaye, Vuckic, Gosling and Anita are all injured while Williamson is suspended. However Tiote returns from his one match suspension and goes straight into the starting line-up. It could be a long afternoon for Newcastle if their midfield doesn t get close enough to Arsenal. In recent weeks, the Mags have been sliced open through the middle, something the Gunners know how to do all too well. Arsenal: Arsenal's injury worries are much less severe than they have been for some time and perhaps with their strongest starting 11 available, Wenger will look to enter the second half of the season on a high. Pardew says: His team will be fresh having not played in midweek and they could stick with the side that beat Wigan, with Walcott again getting the nod up front ahead of Giroud. Koscielny is back fit but unlikely to replace either Mertesacker or Vermaelen despite inconsistent form from the latter. Prediction: The game is expected to be a formality for Arsenal, with their players fresh after their midweek postponement. Tiote will be vital if Newcastle are to get anything from this clash, he is Newcastle s freshest player and if he performs well a result could be on the cards. 7 28 December 2012 Page 7 Slager gets toon chance DUTCH club RKC Waalwijk have agreed to let striker Denzel Slager travel to Tyneside for a trial. Slager, 19, has made two sub appearances for the Eredivisie side this season and is part of their impressive reserve team, which is higher than Ajax s famed academy in the second string table. He s contracted until 2014 but Waalwijk s technical manager Janus van Gelder is happy for the teenager to try his luck at Newcastle. Van Gelder said: Slager is a big talent. He will get the opportunity from us to prove himself at Newcastle in the first week of January. This week we look at Newcastle s past Boxing Day clashes ONE year ago Newcastle triumphed 2-0 away at Bolton. The toon army dominated from start to finish and eventually broke the deadlock midway through the second half with substitute Ben Arfa smashing home a left foot volley. Ba made sure two minutes later when a mazy run and cross by Obertan gave him an easy tap in. Ben Arfa celebrates his goal IT was a poor Boxing Day for Newcastle in 2010 as they were defeated 3-1 by Man City at home. Gareth Barry gave City the lead in the 2 nd minute after a mistake by Tim Krul and Tevez added a second in the 5 th. Andy Carroll got the toon back in the game with a header from a corner his last goal for Newcastle. But the fight back was short lived as Tevez got his second and City s third in the 80 th minute. Carroll heads home IT was another unhappy Boxing Day in 2007 as Newcastle lost 1-0 at Wigan. In a very poor display by the toon, Steve Bruce s Wigan nicked the win through a magnificent free kick from Ryan Taylor. Taylor became a Magpie 13 months later in Taylor after scoring THE toon were involved in a Boxing Day thriller in 2002 losing 4-3 at Sam Allardyce s Bolton. Okocha put Bolton in the lead before Shearer equalised for the Mags but Gardner proceeded to score a minute later. Leaving the score 2-1 after ten minutes. Rickets bagged a brace with goals either side of half time before Ameobi and Shearer gave Newcastle hope, but it wasn t to be. Shearer scores Newcastle s first

8 Page 8 28 December 2012 Totty reporter takes trip into the Mackems den A Totty reporter was dragged to the Sunderland v Man City game on Wednesday with his family here is his take on his brave and potentially fatal adventure. HAVING enjoyed a peaceful Christmas, the time had come for my family s traditional Boxing Day footy match. Having failed to get tickets for Manchester United v Newcastle, my dad surprised us all, with tickets to the dirty Mackems v Man City. As the car pulled up in Sunderland, the Stadium of Light was visible over the river as my stomach began to squirm. This was really going to happen I was going into the Mackems cave. I quickly found my seat which was right behind the goal. City s keeper Joe Hart was thumping shots into the crowd in the warm up and I couldn t help but laugh at the Sunderland fans getting pelted with balls. When the game kicked off I found it Hart s howler allowed Sunderland to win the game hard to watch as the red and white stripes began to pierce my eyes. In the seat next to me, I had been joined by a gremlin of a man who d gone some way to enlighten me on Sunderland s side. Jack Colback s a ginger get. He repeatedly said during the first half. The game had actually started just Pic of the week as I d hoped Sunderland were playing rubbish. Man City were dominating and had three or four good chances cleared by the Black Cats back four. The start was made even better when I checked the toon score and it was 1-0 courtesy of Perchinho. I took great pride in shouting Aw I can t believe it, Perch has scored for Newcastle they re winning 1-0. The horror on the dirty Mackems faces was splendid so far everything was going to plan. The game hobbled on with Sunderland managing to squirm their way to half time with it somehow still 0-0. I was thankful City would be shooting down the other end of the pitch in the second half as the gremlin s terrible banter was getting too much. Every corner he would scream Hey Tevez, where s Snow White and the rest of the dwarves..hahahaha. Laughing at your own bad jokes is the mark of a moron. As the second half began I watched on in horror as Sunderland actually started to play well. The dirty Mackems attacked from the off and to my despair scored in the goal I was sat just yards behind through Adam Johnson. The goal was a fluke though, as Hart spilt it. Afterwards came wave after wave of Sunderland attacks however at this point I wasn t too bothered because Newcastle were winning 3-2 at Old Trafford. I switched my radio off with the nerves as I prayed the toon won the game. Then in the 90 th minute with the SoL bouncing, the gremlin turned to me and said Get in there Newcastle are losing 4-3. I could hardly disguise my horror as I looked around at all the stupid Mackems jumping up and down partying like they d won the FA Cup. I was quite despondent walking out of the ground but a Sunderland fan did manage to raise a smile on my face when I heard him say to his pal I think we re better than Chelsea now. This week s picture was tweeted (a parody account on Twitter). It compares toon players appearance to animals! Mancini was gutted to lose to Sunderland
