HONOURS Scottish Junior Cup HONOURS Intermediate Cup SENIOR HONOURS SFL Division 2 Last Saturday s Scottish Cup victory over West Calder was a welcome boost but I also feel it was a good performance. I thought the work rate and the effort from our boys was excellent and on this occasion we got the goals our play deserved. The pitch was quite heavy and sometimes those types of cup games can prove very tricky but I thought our lads dominated the game for long periods. On Monday night we managed to score another few goals in a friendly with East Kilbride the Lowland League outfit and despite only drawing that game, at least we can be positive that we are capable of scoring a few goals in back to back fixtures. They are a strong outfit with plenty of quality and experience throughout their squad therefore we should expect another difficult game but I ll be looking for us to build on last week s winning performance as we strive to climb up the table. There may be a few more changes in the squad over the coming weeks as we strive to get a winning formula after a poor start. Please give the players as much backing as possible.. 5 Chairman s Chat Wish Bankies all the best for season It was nice to win our last match with goals to spare. The trip to West Calder in the Scottish Junior Cup could definitely be classed as a "potential banana skin" given the West Lothian side's previous cup results. But on a really heavy pitch, our players rolled their sleeves up and turned in an impressive performance to win, in the end, quite comfortably. Almost as pleasing as the players' performance for me was the reception our travelling fans gave the boys as they walked off the park at the end of the match. It was warm and spirited and really appreciated by the whole group. There have been one or two matches this season where our application hasn't been what it should and those have been the most disappointing. But generally our players have given their lot and have either came up short or sometimes been unlucky. In the last few weeks though, our application has never been in doubt and while we retain that we will always have a fighting chance. One final point about last week that was brought to my attention. Players who were left out of the squad were seen at the match with a "carry-out" and understandably some of our supporters - the lifeblood of our club - were not happy. I share their feelings. By the time you read this, all our players will have been spoken to about what is expected of them and it's not standing at the side of the pitch drinking alcohol. The point won't be laboured but the commitment made by our fans to the formation, development and continued existence of this club demands a certain level of behaviour by the players who wear our colours. I am pleased to say that I do think ALL our players have been great in terms of how they represent the Bankies but in this instance the standards fell short of what we expect. Today we welcome Hurlford United to Holm Park as we chase our first league win. Please give the boys your best support. 7 Memory Lane The start of the season saw Bankies paired in the League Cup Section with Arbroath, Berwick Rangers, E.Stirling and Cowdenbeath. An opening day 4-0 defeat at Gayfield was far from the form that would see the season unfold as it did. But in the remaining seven group ties six victories and one draw saw Bankies qualify for the Quarter Finals to play Partick Thistle. Alas, a 4-0 1st Leg loss at Firhill left too much to do although we did win 1-0 at Kilbowie in the return. The real business of the League had already started by now and Bankies tags of early favourites for the title were living up to all expectations as 5 wins from 5 with no goals conceded had seen a perfect start. The first points dropped of the campaign came in the next match with a 1-1 draw against fellow promotion favourites Raith Rovers. In fact Bankies were to remain unbeaten until the 29th of November when a 1-0 defeat at home to Berwick saw the start of a mini blip and three of the next four games were lost. With it being a short season of only 26 games, by the time New Years day came along there were only nine League games left. Bankies remained unbeaten in these games which ended in a title winning draw away to Alloa on the 6th of April. As stated before, the League was short of games so a supplementary Spring Cup involving all First and Second Division sides was played for at the end of the season. Bankies were paired in group six with Raith (Again) and First Division sides Clyde and Queen of the South. Surprisingly, four wins against the higher placed sides saw us qualify for the last sixteen and a two legged affair with Albion Rovers. A 4-1 win in the 1st Leg seemed to have Bankies on easy street but a fine 2-0 win for Albion saw Bankies just holding on for a Quarter Final spot. East Fife were next and again the first game at Kilbowie gave Bankies a lead, this time by 1-0. The same score for the Fifers in the return meant a penalty shoot out which we won 4-2. The Semi-Final saw us at neutral Firhill up against our county rivals Dumbarton who had just lost in the Scottish Cup Semis to Hearts, a fine Bankies performance saw us into the final with a 3-1 win. Alas, the final was to be one step to far against Airdrie. After taking a 1-0 lead Davie Cooper had the chance to tie it up early but missed a penalty. After this it went one way then the other as Airdrie won 4-2 after extra-time. I can remember being taken to a testimonial against Rangers at Kilbowie, and I also went to the final match at Kilbowie, but my first Junior Bankies match was a snowy away day at Carluke, where we won 3-0. I can also remember poor Harkie freezing on the touchline but I was well looked after by the Bankies fans that day and I was hooked on making more games. Q: What is the best match you have seen and why? Difficult to pick really, but I think the title-winning match against Coltness was quite special. I had started going to the matches in the February of that first season and had witnessed the remarkable run of form the team had put together, and it culminated by leapfrogging Carluke and we won the title in spectacular style. We've had similar great runs, both for the Scottish and the league, but that first one I saw the emotions of the long-serving Bankies fans and what it meant to the club. It wasn't just a title win, for those who fought for their club to exist it was a sign that their club was not only back, but they were back in style and to compete at this level. Q: Obviously John you've admitted supporting Bankies only in the Juniors, after listening to all us old yins, which game from the Seniors would you liked to have seen? I've heard a lot of good things about playing Celtic in the Scottish, having made it that far, so I think having been there to witness that would've been impressive. I also would've enjoyed witnessing Clydebank's Cooper tormenting Rangers. Q: Best player you've seen in a Bankies jersey? It's a tough one really as we've had a few special players over the years, but I'd have to go for Darian MacKinnon. He's quite a humble guy any time I've heard him being interviewed but he is always trying to work hard and I feel quite fortunate to have watched him play for the Bankies, considering he's now shining at Accies. Q: Favourite Bankies goal? Alan Jack's volley to beat Lochee United in the Scottish Junior Cup. We were magnificent that day and it was a special goal to win any game. Q: Favourite Bankies strip? I'm a fan of the red diagonal stripe, so definitely that for the home strip. The purple strip was quite nice as the away strip. 30 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON

8 Proud To Be a Bankie. cont d Q: You obviously enjoy filming our matches, if you could take the day off just once which part of the ground would you watch the match from? Probably from the warmth of the social club, window seat with a pie and a pint! I find it hard to keep still if I'm not filming, and I'll tend to walk around while spectating. Q: When you look back in say twenty years time at all your highlights, will you feel quite proud at recording The Bankies history? I'll probably feel I could've done more as I'm my own worst critic, and this season I've had an absolute mare (albeit down to technical issues). I just started doing the filming because nobody else was doing it at the time and it's been amazing to see the feedback from it from fans all around the world. Now with Ross also filming it's eased some of the pressure and expectation I feel has been on me, and he's definitely the future of Bankies TV as he's more efficient with it! But going back to the question, if people have been able to enjoy the highlights, whether they're players or fans or management, whether they were there at the game or on the other side of the world, then I'm proud that what I did was able to bring enjoyment to folk. But a lot of the credit should go to the players and management for giving me so many amazing moments to immortalise! Q:I've asked a few people this John but its different for you having never seen us Senior, Lowland League Yes or No? I reckon that if it's in the best interests of Clydebank FC, then we should go for it. I've made a lot of friends watching the Bankies in the Juniors but it is a fishbowl of sorts and we are a highly ambitious club. The SJFA were rather snarky with me last time I asked them if I could film the final (and then low and behold, the guy they hired to do it went AWOL on them afterwards), so I don't even want to waste my time enquiring again. I might just do what Ian McVicar does and sneakily film anyway! But filming the team talk and the before and after preparations was a really interesting experience, so I might actually do what I did last time and film it like that again, get the thoughts of the players and management before and after, and hopefully film us lifting the trophy instead of our opponents! 10 West Calder Match Report BANKIES cruised into the fourth round of the Scottish Junior Cup with a deserved win over 10 man West Calder United. Goals from Johnny Allan, Jamie Campbell and Ross Harvie made the difference in a hard-fought match. Hermand Park was battered by rain in the days leading up to the tie but an early morning inspection passed the pitch playable. Liam Campbell saved Bankies early on with a good block after slack defensive play exposed the away keeper. But Campbell would go on to have a comfortable afternoon as the back four, well marshalled by makeshift sweeper Tommy Martin, kept the home side at bay. One of the main reasons the visitors looked so secure, though, was the pairing of combative duo Allan and Phil Barclay in the heart of a four-man midfield. Both players dominated the match, snapping into tackles and using the ball well. Barclay almost added a second soon after with a fierce 20-yard drive that fizzed inches over the bar. Bankies were well on top but West Calder have had some notable results in Regional cup competitions this season and showed why. In the 10 minutes or so before the break, the West Lothian outfit upped the pace and began asking questions of their opponents. Although they rarely troubled Campbell s goal, Clydebank s lead was too narrow for the away side to be comfortable. Bankies emerged from the dressing room with renewed vigour for the second half. Although West Calder were dangerous on the break, all the pressure came at the home end. But Bankies weren t making enough of these periods of possession and when the second goal came it was a gift. West Calder keeper Gavin McQuillan booted the ball straight to Campbell who skipped past one defender before drilling home his side s second goal of the game. Campbell s clinical strike settled the tie and there was no way back when United s Fox was sent off for a second bookable offence. Harvie added a third in the closing stages when he rose to head home a Graeme Ramage free-kick past McQuillan. Bankies had to roll up their sleeves and grind out the win but they did it with a bit of style. Their efforts were well-received by the travelling fans who warmly applauded the players from the pitch. The holders bounced back to form last weekend with an emphatic 6-1 Hannah Park Scottish Cup triumph over Shotts Bon Accord. That victory may set alarm bells ringing amongst the Bankies management team as Shotts were the last visitors to Holm Park and left with all three points after a 2-0 win three weeks ago. The Ford had a very good debut season in the Premier Division when finishing third in the table last term. However a defeat at Largs Thistle in May scuppered chances of ending as league runners-up to Auchinleck Talbot. Rumours about levels of investment made at Hurlford United persist but what can t be taken away from manager Darren Henderson is how to turn that into on field glory. Many clubs have tried to buy success over the years and many have failed. It isn t just a matter of how much cash is spent but more about how wisely. The acquisition of players of the calibre of Stewart Kean underlined the fact that the Ford meant business but the management team had to shape that ambition into reality and victory in the Scottish Cup final at Rugby Park was the icing on the cake for Blair Park fans. Their league campaign got off brightly with two wins from the opening two fixtures but since then they have failed to taste victory, losing at home to Talbot and drawing their next three league games. Circumstances have meant that the Ford are again playing catch-up in the league this season, the three replays in the Senior Scottish Cup obviously being the main reason. However that competition is now out of the way following an incredible penalty shoot-out defeat at Stirling Albion in the third round. Darren Henderson s men find themselves fifteen points adrift of Irvine Meadow but with two games in hand over the runaway table toppers. If they have ambitions of lifting the league title this season then they will need to get back to winning ways in the league. It should be noted that they made an almost identical start to last season. The only difference between last season and this is that they have scored and conceded one goal fewer this time around! Last term they won both encounters with Clydebank 1-0 and will be expectant that they can keep this run going this afternoon. Their record at Holm Park against Bankies is good with two wins in their three previous visits. Bankies search for that elusive league victory to kick start their season continues. With eight games gone already this term a growing number of Clydebank fans are getting a bit worried that the gap at the bottom will become too great to bridge. There are now six points between Bankies and safety but they have a game in hand over Cumnock, Shotts and Kilbirnie. Cumnock sit just three points clear of the bottom slot with Troon a further two points better off. These four sides must now become the target for Clydebank to aim for. With Kilbirnie involved in Scottish Cup business following their postponement last weekend a victory for Clydebank this afternoon would heap pressure on the Valefield Park side. Shotts and Troon face each other at Hannah Park where something has to give and Cumnock face a tricky home fixture against fierce rivals Glenafton. Favourable results could herald a change in fortunes for Budgie McGhie s men and see them off the foot of the table and within touching distance of the sides near the bottom end. It doesn t take much scrutinising to figure out where Clydebank s problems lie. They currently have the poorest goal scoring record in the division and are the only club to have failed to score more than one goal in a match this season. Having, statistically, the fourth best defence would suggest that a proven striker could make all the difference so hopefully that gap can be filled before long. Bankies have never really had a prolific front man and have relied on goals from other areas of the pitch. Rumours of a former senior striker being around the club abound so some fans are hopeful that this particular problem position can now be secured. Can Clydebank finally get that monkey off their back with their first league win at Holm Park since April?
