:: Defense Force * Legend Red = Offense * = the disc #s = Defense Positions Main Point: Prevent the Huck The :: is usually used when O is on a downwind point, to prevent an easy huck. always marks usually staying to one side or the other. Front (,, ) and back (,, ) walls are not static, members of each wall pick up offensive players as cut. No throws should be allowed through the front wall. Members of the front wall (,, ) (as with all zones), cannot allow themselves to get pulled too far out of position once the O they were covering enters someone else s space, let them go, get back in position and look for new cutters. If you don t, you re leaving a big chunk of the field WIDE open. Members of the front wall can play facing backward or sideways to see when people are coming in but as with all other zones they re dependant on the deep-deeps to let them know what s going on behind them COMMUNICATION in all zones is key. The deeps (,, ) should never, ever, ever, ever allow someone behind them. Even if an attempted huck to a seemingly open person isn t successful, O has now made a successful punt and gotten the disc all the way downfield it s better to have the turn occur upfield. So poachers - stay on your people!

Force * :: Offense How to Break: Give and go between the handlers, poppers need to keep the front wall busy and away from the handlers. As soon as the wall collapses to stop the handler s give and go, the handlers should look for the poppers who should be open. As with all zones dump and swing till the marker and front wall get tired and start making mistakes (i.e. holes start to form). Once that happens it s easy for the poppers to crash through the front wall and make yardage. Though this seems like small yardage it tires out the marker, making them easier to break. While the handlers are dumping and swinging, poppers and wings need to stay active. There s no place to rest on any zone O (except maybe as a handler) everyone else needs to be moving constantly to keep the D honest and exploit any mistakes. Wings need to be cutting up and down the field, stretching out the deeps, poppers need to be crashing the front wall. Having the wings and poppers switch occasionally causes a lot of confusion for the D. If you need a break and your throws are strong enough, call a switch with a handler to get some fresh legs cutting and popping (goes with all zones). Depending on the wind, its possible to pull the front wall in too close to the handlers then toss stuff over them to deeps cutting in.

:: Defense Main point: Contain the disc in the center of the field. The :: is also used when O is on a downwind point, to prevent an easy huck the deeps should never, ever, ever, ever allow someone behind them. (are you getting it yet?) The cup (, ) takes turns marking, always forcing middle. Unless they have a really good bid, doesn t try to get D on the dump, their job is to prevent the swing across the field. positions him/herself close enough to the dump to make it a tricky throw. As soon as the dump throw goes off, needs to decide whether they can A) get the D or B) bust over and prevent the swing 9 times out of take option B. Sometimes they can also mark the dump right away, forcing a throw back to the original side. Front and back walls are not static, they pick up and drop cutters as they enter and leave their personal space. Members of the front wall can play backward or sideways to see when people are coming in but as with all other zones they re dependant on the deep-deeps to let them know what s going on behind them COMMUNICATION in all zones is key. * Force: Middle If a dump is thrown, runs over to try to prevent the swing If the swing occurs, then forces back to the middle. plays near enough to the dump to make it a tricky though but really wants to prevent the swing across the field again. * *

:: Offense How to Break: Tricky stuff by the handlers, give and go while the cup is trying to prevent the swing. As with all zones dump and swing till the markers and front wall get tired and start making mistakes (i.e. holes start to form). Once that happens it s easy for the poppers and deeps to jump through the front wall and make yardage. While the handlers are dumping and swinging, poppers and wings need to stay active, making real cuts through the front wall. Though this seems like small yardage it tires out the marker, making them easier to break. There s no place to rest on zone O (except maybe as a handler) everyone else needs to be moving constantly to keep the D honest and exploit any mistakes. Depending on the wind, its possible to pull the front wall in too close to the handlers then toss stuff over them to wings cutting in. * Force: Middle The sideline handler gets the dump off. As goes over to mark, the original handler cuts up field. The dump handler hits them for yardage. The poppers must keep the front wall occupied by cutting deep or to the swing side of the field. The swing handler can also look then to cut up field if their marker is on the outside of them and the poppers have the front wall off tied up. * * yardage

:: FM Defense Main Point: Force handlers to make lots of throws, panic and turn it over since everything up field is shut down. The :: is used when O is on an upwind point, forcing the handlers to make lots of little throws, hoping they make a mistake before the cup gets tired and allows something up field. and take turns marking, always forcing middle (FM). Unless they have a really good bid, neither tries to get D on the dump, they re job is to prevent any throws from going through the cup, forcing the O handlers to dump and swing not throw up field. The short deep () covers any holes in the cup (there s usually one between and or and ). They also tell to move right or left to cover any poppers trying to crash the cup. The wings ( and ) cover the sidelines. The deep-deep () never lets anyone behind them, tells the wings and short deep if an O player is cutting in, and will tell a wing to drop and help out if the O sends more than one person deep. COMMUNICATION is imperative. The folks on the sidelines are critical in this zone (and others) telling the wings, deeps, etc. who s cutting into their space. * Force: Middle Once dump has occurred, continues to mark while and move over to cover the swing but letting nothing through them. Once swing has occurred, marks, forcing back toward the other side of the field. * *

continue :: FM Offense How to Break: Handlers dump and swing a ton to get the cup tired out, then its easy pickin s. Another way this zone is often broken is on the continuation of the swing across the field. The swing comes across to the far handler who has a wide open popper on the sideline because the wing wasn t doing their job covering the sideline. As with all zones patience is the key, dump and swing till the cup gets tired and starts making mistakes (i.e. holes start to form). Once that happens it s easy for the poppers and deeps to jump through the front wall and make yardage. There s nothing quite as satisfying as running a clinic against a zone D all the way up the field for a score. While the handlers are dumping and swinging, poppers and wings need to stay active, making real cuts through the cup. Though this seems like small yardage it forces the zone to reset causing temporary confusion on the D, and tires out the cup. Again there s no place to rest, if you can t cut anymore, and you have strong enough throws to do it, switch with a handler to get some fresh legs cutting and popping. Another good technique is for the wing and popper on one side to begin cutting as soon as the swing across the field starts. This forces the D wing to pick one person to cover, hopefully leaving the other O person open. (see below) Once you get it outside of the D, you ve got it made. * Force: Middle -Or- once dump has occurred, the popper and wing start their cut. The cup is so damn tired, they can t get (covered) into position fast enough to mark the swing handler. The wing () has to choose between covering * different people one will be open. * (open)

* :: Trap Defense Main Point: Trap the O on the downwind side of the field where upwind throws are very tough. always marks, usually downwind. plays normal but opens a little more, allowing the swing happen across the field to the trap side they allow nothing upfield. calls the trap and takes over the mark, drops to cover the dump. The short deep () pinches in and covers any holes in the cup (there s usually one between and ). They also tell to move right or left to cover any poppers trying to crash the cup. The wings ( and ), plants themselves on the sideline making sure nothing gets up the line. can pinch in a bit to cover and hammer/scoober attempts to break the mark The deep-deep () is also played the same as in a normal :: COMMUNICATION is imperative. The folks on the sidelines are critical in this zone (and others) telling the wings, deeps, etc. who s cutting into their space. The :: trap is used during a strong cross wind. The cup allows the swing to happen downwind then sets the trap. In a good wind, its extremely difficult for the trapped handler to make a successful pass. Force: (downwind) Once dump has occurred, cup moves over, allowing nothing up field, only the swing. Once swing has occurred the trap is set. calls the trap then sets the mark. covers the sideline, prevents the dump and covers any popper trying to crash the cup. * *

:: Trap Offense How to Break: Poppers attack the cup. If the trap is set, handlers too attack the cup. If its not too windy little throws over the cup are usually wide open (CAREFUL! NO SWILL!) As with all zones dump and swing till the cup gets tired and starts making mistakes (i.e. holes start to form). If there s a strong cross wind, the downwind handler must be the one with the strongest throws and should play away from the line so they don t get trapped to easily. The downwind handler should never hold on to the disc allowing the trap to be set, get rid of it asap. If you do get trapped with no good throws to other handlers - PUNT! Throw the damn thing as far down field as you can. Don t turn the disc over on our endzone by putting up some swilly prayer of a throw. Wings and poppers have just as much chance to catch swill downfield as handlers do. If the turn does occur, at least its away from our endzone making a D score more difficult. (I like this as a general rule as well) If the trap gets set, the dump handler drops for monster dump, the far-side handler crashes the cup and the far-side wing moves in for the swing * Force: (downwind) (stay away from sideline) If the trap is set. ) Crash the cup. Exploit any hole or opportunity you see as a cutter. ) Thrower must have super patience, don t force anything or put up some swill for a dump if you have to put up swill PUNT!. ) Pray. ) Call a time out if you feel its necessary. * Help me!

Main Point: Isolate and shut down key offensive players Cup and Man Defense,, and run down and put on a cup as normal. The back field ( ) play a somewhat loose man at first then tightens up as soon as the disc is in. The O usually thinks it s a zone and spreads out, filling the field, clogging everywhere. The cup can either force middle or trap to one side. Inexperienced offenses won t know what the hell is going on, get frustrated and turn the disk over. Crafty veteran teams can shred this so be ready to switch to all out Person D. Crafty veterans will try to switch a popper or wing with one of the handlers. Thus an extra defender is brought up into the cup area. If the person is guarding gets the disc, must drop back a bit to let the cup put the mark on. They then look to see if the old handler is still handling or cutting long. If the old handler is cutting now marks them. * Force: * Swings over for dump Cup stays on the mark * Covers new player may follow cutter in for a minute but needs to let them go and pick up handler cutting long

How to Break: Rotate handlers and cutters Cup and Man Offense O needs to recognize quickly what type of zone is being thrown so they know how to break it. Be the crafty veteran and send this piece o shit zone packin. Continually switch poppers and wings with handlers. Eventually a defender will be brought up into the cup area leaving someone (usually a former handler) wide open. If the person is guarding gets the disc and they stay with them. The old handler cuts long wide open. Another great way to shread it is for the poppers and deeps to stay out of the way on one side of the field and let the handlers run a dominator (Ohio) * Force: * get out of here! * POACH!!! follows cutter in leaving the handler cutting long wide open for the swing and continuation up the line.
