The Commander s Desk Did anyone see the article in the latest edition of the American Legion Magazine about Post 222 Last Man s Club? Doc Hawbaker and Dick Yeakle provided the picture and information contained in the article. A Message From The Post Manager Robert Carbaugh, Commander Clear Spring Legion Post 222 Under New Management Let me introduce myself.my name is Stacey Schlotterbeck and I will be residing as your new Manager here at Post 222. I want to thank everyone that has welcomed me and is helping me during my first week here. I am enjoying meeting everyone and learning the organization. I reside right here in our little town of Clear Spring, in which I was born and raised. I am current-ly a Lifetime member (10+years), House Committee Chairman and Banquet Chairman of the Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Company. At this year s Awards Banquet, I received the President s Award, the Chief s Award and an award from the County Commissioners for my dedication to the fire company and the community. I was honored to have received these awards and being recognized for what I love to do alongside a great group of guys and ladies who I consider my family. I will put that same effort into the Legion and its members/guests to make our future successful. Continued.
PAGE 2 THE TRIPLE DEUCE August 1, 2015 During my time here, I would like to welcome any new ideas or concerns. I want you, as a member/guest, to have a great experience while you are here and to continue visiting us, maybe even bring a few new friendly faces. I will do my best to listen and take in anything thrown my way. With a little time to get familiar with things and making some changes, I believe we are in for a great future. Thank you again to everyone here at the Legion for welcoming me and offering your support. Thank you to my family, as well, for your support in my new adventure. Here s to a new and bright future! A Few Words From Curt Stacey Schlotterback, Manager The time has come when we must welcome a new manager. Stacey Schlotterback has taken my place on July 13th as manager of our Legion. She will do a good job as manager. I will still be here doing rentals and caterings for the Legion. So, take an easy on her until she gets her feet wet, (an old wise tail). Just think, 7 months have gone by. Where does time fly? (another wise tail). They say as you get older time just flies. I believe it now! WHAT S HAPPENING Friday, August 7th, Steak Feed then Karaoke 9-12 Friday, August 21st, Grab Bag Night. Just $5.00 per bag. There are good things in the bag, no jokes or is there? Don t Forget, Lottery for the whole month of September. It s a good deal, just $10.00 per ticket. BINGO, every Tuesday night! They call it bar bingo but more of the dining area gets bingo than the bar. THE THANK YOU LIST To all the employees I have worked with recently and over the years. To all the volunteers who help with the events. To all the grass cutters as in mowing, Dick, Gerald and a new man Jerry Yeakle. Thanks a bunch! To all who helped at the S.A.L. Golf Tournament. Good job! To all the members, Legion, Auxiliary, S.A.L. We pull together a do a great job to keep the Legion working. Curt Kayser, Past Manager Post 222 Commander and Chaplain Attend 2015 Department of Maryland Convention Post 222 Commander Robert Carbaugh and Chaplain Kenny Clopper attended the annual Department of Maryland Convention in Ocean City, MD, July 13-17th. Highlights of the convention included reports from the various Department Districts and from the Depart. of Maryland Officers. The Department of Maryland Post Everlasting Ceremony was especially awesome! Our post members and auxiliary who passed during the past year were included in the recognition ceremony. On Friday, we assisted with the installation of the newly elected Department officers. All-in-all, it was a very informative and interesting experience, something that we may want to do again next year.
PAGE 3 THE TRIPLE DEUCE August 1, 2015 July Steak Feed Highlights Our July steak feed was a success with over 100 steaks sold! Here are some pictures of our volunteers. Do they look familiar, as if you ve seen them previously? That s because we have the same volunteers stepping forward month after month. Our next steak feed is scheduled for August 7th. Let our House Committees know that you re available to volunteer. Ladies Auxiliary Back to school bingo was held on July 26th in the Activity Building from 1-3pm. School supplies were given out to the winners of bingo games and a backpack filled with items when they left. The Legion donated four ride tickets to the carnival which were raffled off to four lucky winners! The Ladies Auxiliary also provided hot dogs, chips, cookies and a drink. The children really enjoyed playing bingo and winning school items. Many thanks go out to all that made it special especially Cathy Mills and Cindy Blair and all the other members of our Ladies Aux. that volunteer their time to make our Legion a success. Thanks Deb Hose, Mary House, Sharon Ensminger, Laura Blair, Annie Kayser, Jill Baum, and Susan Bandeff. Our cooks did a great job; thanks Matt Blair and Chuck Mills. First day of school is: Wednesday, August 19th.
PAGE 4 THE TRIPLE DEUCE August 1, 2015 Post Historian In the year 2019 the American Legion will be celebrating 100 years as the leading origination for veterans. They have created a web page just for this. Part of this page is to have every Legion Post included here. This is being done by states. I have added Post 222 to Maryland on this site. What you will see is not the finished page. I ll be adding more as time goes by. Please have a look at it; let me know what it needs, and I ll add to it. Follow these steps to find it: Type in: centennial.legion.org Click on: Post Index To Left Click on: Maryland Click on: Clear Spring Maryland Post 222 Take some time to look at the August issue of The American Legion Magazine. On page 60, you will find a small article on Post 222 Last Man s Club. One of their editors e-mailed me to ask permission to use one of the photos in the album section of our centennial page. Dr. Eldon Hawbaker wrote a great history of the Last Man s Club. It was reduced to what you see in the magazine. Dick Yeakle, Post Historian S.A.L. I would like to thank everyone that helped and participated in the SAL Golf Tournament. It was once again a great success. Also, a big thanks to everyone that helped with the SAL/Fire Co. Gun Bonanza, especially the Ladies Auxiliary members and the Legion members of our post. I look forward to next year and our continued success. Rob Bowman, SAL Commander Editor s Box I m feeling a little sealy! I was fortunate enough this year to take a California vacation with my family. We started in San Francisco, with the highlight being Alcatraz, then from there Monterey. Bragging rights go to Sam, he was the only one that got in the Pacific Ocean...he fell in! The water was freezing cold when a wave came up from behind and took him out. We followed Rt. 1 along the coast which was absolutely breath taking. Along the way we were able to get up close to Elephant Seals relaxing in the sun. They go out to sea at night to feed and come in during the day to relax. I couldn t get enough of the California wild life. Truly a site to see up close. We then headed to San Diego and back up to LA where we spent the remaining five days. We went to Disney Land, of course, and Universal Studios. The highlight for me was a chauffeured tour through LA where not only we saw the glam of the city but also the poverty side as well. Truly not the city of dreams for many. The boys were fascinated with the active oil rigs. The trip was both educational and fun, truly the trip of a lifetime. Did I mention Minions? LA was literally taken over by them promoting the release of the latest Minion movie. Hope you are all having a great summer! Robin Vance, Editor
