EXHIBIT VS PROJECT Throughout the 4-H year, you learned and then demonstrated to your club how to make cookies. Next you make cookies for the 4-H Club bake sale and finally gave cookies to senior citizens. The learning and activities done during a year create the project. The exhibit is the plate of cookies and the explanation of your achieved goal for them. Be sure to explain how you achieved your goal, what you learned as you worked to achieve your goal, and what you may do differently in the future. The exhibit tells the audience what you learned while achieving your goal, a single idea of the project. The project enhances skills learned from accomplishing a goal. For example, sharing your cookies with senior citizens enhances your citizenship skill, as you are being kind to those in your community. WRITING GOALS If you have a question, please visit with Jessica. Goals Have 3 Parts: 1. The Action- How will you reach your goal? 2. The Results- What will you accomplish? 3. The Timetable- When are you going to do it? Check Your Goal: 1. Does it have the 3 basic parts? (listed above) 2. Do you have control over the goal? 3. Is it measurable? An example of 4-H project goal: I will learn how to make cinnamon rolls by county fair. (Food & Nutrition Exhibit goal, as I would have a plate of cinnamon rolls at the fair) COPYRIGHT INFO Duplication of copyright material or design should not be used in a 4-H exhibit that is presented as original work by the exhibitor. A copyright design cannot be displayed in a public setting (fair) without permission being granted from the owner of the copyright. When permission has been granted by the owner of the copyright, the exhibit will be displayed and labeled appropriately. Those without permission cannot be displayed. If you have a question, please visit with Jessica. 3

WHAT WILL THE JUDGE ASK ME AT THE FAIR? The questions the judge will ask depends on your exhibit goals and how the exhibit looks. Usually the judge askes you to explain your goal. You will find it helpful to write down a clear, short-one sentence goal statement before you begin to create your exhibit. After the judge know what your goals were, he or she will want to know how you worked toward reaching your goal. You may want to share where you found your information or how you learned the skill. You may also want to share the decisions you made and how you made them, or some of the problems you had and how you solved them. Take the time to think about the most important thing(s) you learned while you created your exhibit and be prepared to share this with the judge. The judge also will want you to explain what plans or ideas you have, based on what you have learned or discovered. A good way to practice what you will tell the judge is to visit with an adult such as a parent, leader or another 4-H er. Tell them about your goals, how you worked towards them, what you learned and your future plans. It is better to simply talk with someone about these items than to memorize a speech, sine you don t know exactly what the judge will ask. Remember that the judge isn t the only one who can ask questions. If you don t understand something the judge says or would like their idea on something, you can ask them questions. 4-H T-SHIRTS Wright County green 4-H t-shirts are available for purchase. The cost is $10.00 and they can be purchased at the Wright County Extension office. There are youth and adult sizes. All 4-H youth need to wear a 4-H shirt when judging exhibits, animals, communication events, working in the food stand, pop stand or hosting the exhibit bldg. Stop in the office and get your shirt today! 4

INAPPROPRAITE FOOD EXHIBIT FOR FAIR Food and Nutrition exhibitors should review guidelines for inappropriate food exhibits in the Iowa State Extension publication found at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/sites/ www.extension.iastate.edu/files/wright/inappropriatefoodexhibits.pdf Is your food exhibit appropriate? Ask yourself: 1. Does this product require refrigeration? 2. Would you eat this product at room temperature? 3. Will the product hold up so it represents a standard when evaluated by judges or viewed by the public? Check the details for specific products. HORTICULTURE EXHIBITS Exhibits should follow guideline in 4H-464 Preparing Cut Flowers & Houseplants for Exhibit or 4H -462 Harvesting & Preparing Vegetables for Exhibit. Available at the office or our website https:// store.extension.iastate.edu/ 4-H COMMUNICATION JUDGING Communication (working exhibits, educational presentation, extemporaneous speaking and the Pride of Iowa) entries will be judged at the Wright County District Junior Fair on Saturday, July 11 at 11 am in the 4-H Exhibit building. The fair evaluation meeting has been set for Thursday, August 4th 7:30 p.m. at the Extension office. This will be a time to discuss the 2016 fair. Positive feedback and suggestions are encouraged. PINTEREST FAIR EXHIBITS CORRECT WAY TO LIST SOURCE The issue with Pinterest that we teach judges about during judges training is that it cannot be listed as a source. The reason: Pinterest is a virtual bulletin board. So just like a cork bulletin board, where you take ideas from various places and tack them up to remember them for later - the same is true for Pinterest. Each item on Pinterest has an original source. The original source should be what is listed. The issue doesn't have anything to do with whether or not the idea itself is original. So you can use Pinterest, but they have to credit the original source, which would be a link attached to the pin. It just takes a little more digging to find the source. In this newsletter there are step by step directions to fine the original. Questions call Jessica. 9

PINTEREST TO ORIGINAL SOURCE IN 3 EASY STEPS 1) Find item/recipe on Pinterest Wow, that cheeseburger casserole really looks good!. Click on the image 10

2) Clicking on the image brings up a page just for the cheeseburger casserole. Still on a Pinterest page but wait! Scroll the mouse over the casserole picture and a Visit number-2- pencil.com icon pops up below the image. Now we re getting somewhere that s starting to look like an original source. Not Pinterest, but number-2-pencil.com. (We could live with citing number-2-pencil.com as the source, but we can do better. ) Click on either the image of the casserole or on the Visit number=2-pencil.com icon. http://pinterest.com/pin/77053843597777816/ 11

3) Voila! A new window pops up on a page from the original website of the recipe number-2 -pencil.com. Scrolling down even tells us that Melissa at number-2-pencil.com is the author and there s even a button to print the recipe for our recipe book. Now we ve actually found the original source. http://www.number-2-pencil.com/2013/06/26/one-pot-cheeseburger-casserole/ 12
