1 July 27, 2017 To: Dakota County 4-H Livestock Families From: Anja Johnson, Dakota County 4-H Program Coordinator Bob Nordling, Dakota County 4-H Fair Coordinator Re: Important County Fair Livestock Project Information This is a lengthy letter that will only be sent by and posted on the Dakota County 4-H website for your reference. It is a good idea to print it for your entire family s reference. Helpful links: 2017 Dakota County 4-H Premium Book Dakota County 4-H webpage Livestock Interviews Livestock Interviews are Monday, July 31 from 5-8 p.m. at the Sheep Barn on the Dakota County Fairgrounds. 4- Hers will sign-up for an interview time for each species when they arrive. While waiting for interviews, please stop by each species table you are showing and review and update your county fair exhibit entries and complete any necessary paperwork. Watch for signs. Registration Papers If your animal is a registered (purebred) animal and you did not upload the registration paper into the 4HOnline system by May 15, you must BRING A PHOTOCOPY with you to Livestock Interviews and turn in at the species table, and 4-H staff will upload in 4HOnline. You are still required to bring a copy of the registration paper to animal verification at county fair. Show Catalogs Show catalogs will be posted on the Dakota County 4-H website under articles before each show so you can see what classes your animals are in. Reminder--Late Exhibit Registrations If you registered a livestock exhibit after the June 29 deadline, that exhibit will be considered short term. Short term exhibits are eligible for blue, red and white ribbon placing and premiums and may not compete past a blue ribbon and are not eligible for Champion, Reserve Champion, Award of Excellence, Minnesota State Fair, 4-H State Horse Show, the 4-H Livestock Auction, State Dog Show. Animal Identification Animals identified incorrectly (missing ear tag, missing scrapie s, tattoo incorrect, etc.) will be able to show up to a blue ribbon and are not eligible for Champion, Reserve Champion, Award of Excellence, Minnesota State Fair, 4-H State Horse Show, the 4-H Livestock Auction, State Dog Show. 2 Declaring Animal Exhibitor At County Fair verification and weigh-in, 4-H members must declare who is showing each animal and which class it is being shown in and cannot be switched to another sibling or class after weigh-in/verification at county fair. Multiple Animals in the same weight class Only Dakota County 4-H members can show animals in 4-H shows at the Dakota County Fair. If a 4-H member has 2 animals in the same class, they can choose another Dakota County 4-H member to show their 2 nd animal. If a 4-H member has multiple animals in the same weight class, the exhibitor may show one animal in the next heavier weight class or the 4-Her may select another Dakota County 4-H er to show one of the animals and show both of them in the same weight class. 4-H Grooming policy If you have anyone helping you groom your animal, you must follow the fitting and grooming policy on page 11. This must be on hand at 4-H Livestock office at the time of entry. Barn Set-Up Beef/Dairy Rabbit Horse Rabbit Beef Sheep/Goat Poultry Barn clean-up and set-up, Monday, July 31 from 5-8 p.m. Please help with set-up before and after your interviews. Rabbit barn tear-down, Tuesday, August 8 at 8 p.m. Beef Cow/Calf barn tear-down, Tuesday, August 8 at 8 p.m. Set-up Wednesday, August 9 at 8 a.m. Set-up Wednesday, August 9 at 7 a.m.; tear-down, Sunday, August 13 at 6 p.m. Please note: Barn set-up and tear-down is very important, please make an effort to help set up the barn for your animals. If you exhibit - you set-up and tear-down. State Fair Acceptance Process State fair trips will be posted on the wall outside of the Livestock Office in the Swine Barn following each show. It is your responsibility to verbally accept/decline your state fair trip with 4-H Staff. State Fair paperwork will be available for pick-up when you accept your trip. It is an expectation (and important!) that all 4-H state fair livestock exhibitors attend the state fair meeting on Saturday, August 12 at 1 p.m. at the Extension Office. BRING the completed packet with you to the state fair meeting on Saturday. State Fair Trips must be accepted by 3 p.m. on Friday, August 11; however, we ask that you confirm after your livestock shows when trips are awarded so that others can get their trips finalized accepted. So kids could hold out until 3 p.m. to confirm a trip from a Monday show? This gives them too much time. Auction It is your responsibility to sign-up by 3 p.m. on Friday, August 11 to be in the 4-H Livestock Auction. Sign-up forms will be available at the 4-H Livestock Office located in the Swine Barn. A blue ribbon does not guarantee you a spot in the auction. The auction will be held on Saturday, August 12 at 10 a.m. in the Swine Barn. If you are selected to be in the auction, it is your responsibility to have your animal ready to go and present it in the auction ring. Auction participants must have their picture taken with their animal and write a thank you to the buyer. A personal thank you to the buyer is always appreciated. Take a moment to say hello to the buyer and give them your thanks for attending our auction.

3 4-H Olympics This is a fun event for youth to participate in. Gather a team of 4 or 5 4-H members and join in on the fun on Sunday, August 13 at 11:30 a.m. in the Swine Barn. The deadline for teams to sign up is Thursday, August 10 at 8 p.m. You can sign up at the 4-H Livestock Office in the Swine Barn or in the 4-H Building. Shipping of Livestock You must sign-up to have your animal(s) shipped to market from county fair by 12 p.m. on Saturday, August 12. Fill out the shipping form available in the 4-H Livestock Office in the Swine Barn. Shipped livestock will be loaded at 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 13. Please be available and have your animal prepared for load out. Small Animal Supreme Showmanship Small Animal Supreme Showmanship will on Saturday, August 12 at 4:30 p.m. which will be held in the Swine Barn Judging Arena. This contest includes: goats, rabbits and poultry. This contest is for the top senior showmen for the three species. Champion Awards Program 4-H Champion awards will be awarded to champion winners at the 4-H Champion Awards Program on Sunday, August 13 at 4 p.m. The awards program will take place at the 4-H Building on the fairgrounds. Champions will have their photo taken, write a thank you to their donor and receive their champion t-shirt. Please make every effort to attend the awards program. If you cannot attend you will need to make arrangements to come to the office to get your photo taken with your award and write a thank you before you receive your award and t-shirt. Livestock Trailer Parking All Livestock trailers should be parked in the designated lot east of the horse arena. Herdsmanship Please keep your areas in the barns including your animals, tack and aisles clean. Judging will run the entire week of the fair. The purpose of herdsmanship is to help you learn skills in making a presentable exhibit for the public, as well as learn skills in courtesy, cooperation, neatness, and proper care of animals. The goal is to showcase a positive image of animal agriculture at the fair guests. 4-H members in the winning club will each receive a malt coupon. Chaperoning at state fair If you are interested in chaperoning if your child gets a state fair trip, please make sure that you complete the volunteer screening process today! If you wait until your child wins a state fair trip to go through the screening process, it is too late. Volunteer screening application and instructions: 4-H Graduates If you are graduating from 4-H this year, please make a poster with 6-7 photos that can be hung in the barns to celebrate your 4-H career and your accomplishments. If you haven t done so already, please submit a short paragraph about yourself which will be put into the livestock show catalogs of the species which you are

4 showing. This needs to be sent or given to your respective species volunteer no later than Monday, July 31. Send a brief paragraph to about yourself to Anja at Akoester@umn.edu by Monday, July 31.
