TREASURER'S REPORT From Mar 2013 What is going on here with the rope tied to the car? (See next page) The 2013 Jet Rally at Fitchburg Airport 4 of 7

What is going on here with the rope tied to the car? The photo is probably from before WWII. It shows a method of starting the engine. The 'rope' is actually a big #&*ʘ@ bungee cord with a leather mitten sown onto one end. One blade was positioned approximately horizontally and the mitten placed over the tip. The bungee was led up over the spinner and tied onto the bumper of a vehicle. After setting the fuel and ignition, someone would get in the vehicle and drive sideways out from the aircraft about as far as possible and set the brakes. Whoever drew the short straw would then flip the prop past the line of pull. As the bungee gained a more advantageous angle, the propeller would accelerate and the engine would start. The centrifugal force then throws off the mitten as it goes flying toward the bumper at quite an impressive speed. Staying clear of the propeller was routine but staying out of the path of the bungee was also a good idea. This story was related to me (Bill R) some time in the 1960's by a flyer who actually used this method in the colder weather when the inertia starter just didn't have the right stuff.
