Just a reminder, the Twirler Sunday May dance is also the first Sunday - May 1 st. See you there! I get by with a little help from my friends John Lennon. Keep our friends in our hearts, say a prayer, send them a card or give a call to show you care. Kindness is a great healer. Please keep all our friends in your thoughts this month and always. Ron Morris had heart by-pass surgery on March 23 rd. At press time, he s being released today and will recuperate at his son s home for a while. That same week, Henry Byle had his second hip surgery; he s recovering at Manor Care in Hemet. May Birthdays Les Smith 1 st Happy Anniversary Ben & Fran Jasinski 6th Vic & Shaunna Kaaria 8th Don & Kay Gamble 10th When you hear of someone who is not well or needs some cheer, let Margie Zingg know. You can reach her at (951) 244-2404. Have a great month! Margie Notes from Rosalie Our March dance with Randall and Holmes brought a big crowd who enjoyed all the delicious finger foods provided by our Twirler members. Joe & Vi Henderson greeted the guests, making them feel welcome as they always do. In Margie's absence Steve Falgout and Muriel Greenwood put up her decorations. Helping in the food setup and cleanup was Ron Morris, Muriel Greenwood, Steve Falgout, Chris Burns, and our Canadian students Dave and Shirley MacLean. We hear from so many of our guests how wonderful our food is...so THANKS to all of you generous Twirlers. If you would like to help at a dance call Rosalie 244-0672 or just pop in and she ll put you to work I (Randy) have just attended an earthquake task force meeting as part of my duties with the Civil Air Patrol. The most important fact for us that came out of the meeting is that if we experience an earthquake on the magnitude of Japan, it may take first responders up to 10 days to reach us. This is because most of the roads and infrastructure will be gone. So what can we do to be prepared? Food and water will be the most important items. I suggest you do the following: --Keep four cases of 24 count bottled water in your home. Place them in separate places. Keep in a cool place, but not on concrete. --Buy canned goods enough to last 10 days. Tuna fish, chili, beans, canned chicken are good items to keep. --Keep an extra propane bottle for your barbeque. Also a propane camping stove will be helpful. --Credit and bank cards will be of no use. Keep several hundred dollars in 5 and 10 dollar bills. --A good small battery radio and flashlights will be very useful. Have lots of extra batteries. Also battery powered lanterns would make your nights more enjoyable. If you are at home when the earthquake hits, try to lie down next to a bed or sofa. This will provide space for you if the building collapses. Door jams will probably collapse in a Japan size earthquake. Andy & Lorie Abeles H Rosalie Nusser H Harriett Vermont H Barbara Canfield H Ron Morris H Randy & Sue Gibson H Jim Kirsh H Nancy Welch H Bill & Jackie Brown went to The Whirlaways to dance to David Mee (our caller next month!). March 25 TH to the Riverside Single Swingers; Lisa Evans H Rick Jones H Rosalie Nusser H Randy & Sue Gibson Lisa Evans was the club member drawn to win the Visitation Pot last month. Unfortunately, she didn t attend a visitation last month. April s dance drawing will be for $30.00. If it goes unclaimed again, it will grow by another $5 for May. To be eligible to win, your name must be drawn; and have attended one of the Twirler s visitations and be at the Club Dance. Starting in April we will be making the following change: Every club dancer will still have their name in the pot. Then, each month, you can increase your chances of winning the pot by attending the official and scatter visitations. How? The names of everyone who went on a club visitation (official or scatter) will be added to the pot. Your name could be entered 4 times for the drawing at the end of the month if you attend all the club sponsored visitations! At the end of the month, all extra names will be removed from the pot and we begin again. Remember, the extra names only remain in the pot for the current month and do not carry over. Informal visitations do not count except as ways to get out and have a good time dancing with friends. April - May 2011 Page 3

Official Visitation for May 2011 * Club Outfits * Saturday, May 7 th 7:30 Rounds 8:00 Squares Redlands B n B s Fiesta Dance Redlands Community Center 111 W. Lugonia Ave; Redlands Featuring Mike Seastrom & David Mee Calling Carol Allen, Cueing *Please wear your club outfit* Visitation Vibes May had so much to offer in the way of great dances that we couldn t narrow it down any further than 4. It s a great way to start the new visitation drawing rules. The more you attend a visitation, the more chances you have to have your name drawn. Did you know that the club banners given out to visiting clubs at our dances have to be retrieved? That means our members have to go out and dance. We are keeping track of which clubs have our banners and make visiting them a priority. We need your help with this. Sometimes that means traveling a longer distance to a club that has our banner instead of going to the closest location. We are trying really hard to have car pools available for those who do not drive at night etc. We also visit other clubs that have fun callers so that they have to come visit us to retrieve their banners, which helps to pay for our club callers, cuers and other costs. We have also added "We are Going Dancing" sign-ups for other dances that a few people may be going to during the month. For example, because the Grapestompers dance is not a visitation this month, but there is a group of people going, they can put down that they are planning to attend on the clip board near the other visitation sign-ups. Here s a recap of our April visitations: Official to Ocean Wavers is Friday April 1 st with Nasser Shukayr promising to be a fun dance. Scatter to the CCHA Hoedown in Banning on Saturday, April 30th with Andy Allemao and Steve Woodard calling, with Rey Garza cueing. This is a special event with a full dinner served at 5:00, Rounds start at 6:30 and squares begin at 7:00. This dance will have a new format that includes 2 FUN mainstream tips for September class members. This Dinner-Dance event is a bit different than the usual, and sure to be a great time. Dinner will be served at 5pm, pre-sale ribbon needed to attend dinner & dance (Lorie has the ribbons for sale at $15 each). Dance only is payable at the door for a $7.00 donation. Sign-up sheets are at the club dances and Wednesday workshops and class. You can also give Andy or Lorie a call at 951-764-3347. Please read over the list and choose a position where you would like to participate. To make the jobs easier, we have "Co-Director positions now. Having more than one person/couple responsible would allow more flexibility and "off" time for the Directors elected and ensures a smooth running club. Appointed positions and Co-Directors do not have to attend the monthly board meetings. They only vote if the Directors are not present, or the Director can send in a proxy vote along with any information they want presented at the meeting. Below is a list of all of the positions, elected and appointed. WE NEED NEW PEOPLE ON THE BOARD. DIRECTORS President Vice President Treasurer Secretary CCHA Rep. Sunshine Hospitality Publicity Floating Director APPOINTED POSITIONS JOB SUMMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Run the Board meetings, emcees the monthly dances, has to live in Canyon Lake Oversees Class managers, club instructor and classes Handles finances of the club and class Minutes of the Board meetings, correspondence etc. Attends 4 meetings per year, recommends monthly visitations to clubs Visit and send cards to members, illness, birthdays etc. Oversees decorations, food and greeters for Club dances and class Themes for club dances, generates and distributes club flyers to other clubs, place advertisements in local papers etc. for club events and classes. JOB SUMMARY Historian Keeps scrapbook up to date Class Managers Oversees classes Newsletter Prepares monthly newsletter Website Manager Keeps the web site up-to-date Meet Twirler Class members in a FRIENDLY SQUARE Vic Kaaria - Class Caller/Instructor Our phase one class is doing very well. One couple from our phase two class have decided that they need to repeat phase one giving us 15 people in the phase one class. Dave & Shirley MacLean have gone back to Canada for the summer. We wish them well and will look forward to their return in the fall. That leaves us with 10 people in phase two class. We are working on getting these people out to other dances. It helps prepare them for the square dance world once they graduate. Since we are not starting a new Phase I class in May, it will give us more time to prepare them. We also need angels on Wednesday nights to dance with the new dancers and help them learn. Do you need to brush up on your dancing skills or maybe just want to gain some more floor time? Come to the workshop on Wednesday nights, starting at 6:15 pm and stay for the class. We always love to have lots of our friends at both! See you angels on Wednesday night! This is the time of year when our phase 2 class members are coming to the dances and dancing the mainstream tips. They need the security of friendly faces in their square. Please make it a point to include them when you square up for the mainstream tips. It sometimes takes a little pre-planning, or you could dance each mainstream tip with them Also, there is the slow singing call tip in the middle of the dance. We are their "security blankets" and we want them to have a positive experience when they try their dancing wings. April - May 2011 Page 5

Square D Fashions Sacramento, CA 916-207-6101 / 877-502-8317 (toll-free) e-mail: squaredfashions@comcast.net Visit our well-stocked booth: CALIFORNIA STATE CONVENTION SAN DIEGO, CA APRIL 8-9-10 We ll have an impressive variety of creative and unique originals for gals, as well as lots of choices for guys too. As a FULL SERVICE store, we also offer a wide selection of accessories. Check out our web site: www.squaredfashions.com Square Dance Jargon As promised last month, here are a few more terms that come to mind. Sight Calling - Calling ad lib and then trying to untangle the square on the fly, rather like unscrambling a Rubik's cube. A caller s nightmare. Break Down - What a square has done when so few dancers know where they're supposed to be that everyone is hopelessly lost. Tip - The time you spend dancing in one square without a break. Typically this consists of a patter call and a singing call. Origin of this term is obscure. Workshop - A class for people who already know one level to learn the next level, or to gain more skill at their current level. Angel - A dancer participating in a class who already knows how to dance the level being taught. Dark - Not meeting. Said of a night that a club would ordinarily meet, but this time doesn't. Couple - Two side-by-side dancers facing the same direction. Normal Couple - A couple with a gent standing to the left of a lady. Leader, Trailer - In any 1x2 setup (e.g., a tandem, facing dancers, etc.), the dancers facing out of the setup are leaders, those facing in are trailers. Sound Effect - Something the dancers yell back, ideally in unison, in response to a call. Makes for a little fun. For example: Ferris Wheel - "Wheeee" Flutterwheel - "Whoop, whoop, whoop" Ladies In, Men Sashay - Ladies whoop it up Scoot Back - Scooters grunt, or Scooters squeal if girls Slide Thru - "Whoosh" while sliding arms out to her sides Spin the Top - "Spin the Top?" Load the Boat - "Toot, toot" Ping Pong Circulate - Clap hands Relay the Ducey WooHoo! CLUB JACKETS Andy and Lorie Abeles have worked really hard to find the "best deal" for us on club jackets. If you do not have one, the price is right. $30.00. There are flyers to fill out with your name and size. See the sample Jacket displayed at the dances and workshops, or call them for more information. FIESTA DAY IS COMING UP. That is a Canyon Lake activity. Ask your Directors about it. Andy has been taking videos of the class for the weekly "teaches" of the new calls and putting it on the Twirler website. Those members who do not make it to the weekly workshops, could look there to review the teaches. It is a welcome visual tool for learning. Class members are loving it! Director Committees we are looking for members who can help with hospitality at the class and dances, make phone calls etc. We want to have "greeters" at the door for the Wednesday class also. If you are interested in doing this, please let Gary W or Rosalie know. The California State Convention is in San Diego this year. Don t miss this opportunity to attend the convention so close to home! April 8, 9 & 10, 2011. For those of you that would like to attend the Board Meetings, the day & time of our meetings have changed. We meet on the 3 rd Wednesday of the month from 4-6 pm in the downstairs card room at the Lodge (before the workshop & class). Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join us at the monthly Board Meeting. Gentlemen Twirlers, if you do not already have a Twirler shirt and would like one. Call Karin Sanchez - you provide the white shirt, she has the colors. We ll be having an experienced clothing sale next month. If you have items you would like to donate, please talk to any of our Board Members or send an email to us at canyonlaketwirlers@gmail.com if you re interested in donating to the sale, helping out or buying. More details to come soon. We are looking for businesses interested in advertising in our monthly newsletter. This would greatly help to defray costs for the club. If you know of someone, or yourself, who would have a business to advertise, we are developing a solicitation letter. Remember, ideas, photos or questions, info to include in Twitter, my e-mail is countryxmodel@yahoo.com and my phone number is (951) 750-4866. April - May 2011 Page 6

CALLER SPOTLIGHT On David Mee, Caller & Dawn Mee, Cuer David has been calling for over 27 years. He began calling originally in 1975 at the age of 11, however he did not fully pursue the calling profession until 1980. Since that time David has become a very popular, well liked and highly sought after caller. Known for his playful yet professional style he calls dances in California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, among other states on a regular basis. He has also called dances internationally in several countries including Denmark, Sweden, and China. David calls and teaches all levels from Basic to A - 2. In addition to his square dance calling, David works as an executive for Disney, and as the saying goes; for David it truly is "The Happiest Place on Earth". He also sings and plays the Piano with Praise Band at Central Community Church in Riverside California. Dawn has been a well-known name in the clogging community since it became popular in the mid 1970 s. As a founding member of the Cripple Creek Cloggers, she has danced and competed in clogging events across the country. Dawn has made sure that her traditions carry on, as each of her three daughters have become excellent advanced level Cloggers. Dawn saw that her passion about dancing reached outside of the Clogging community and she has found a home in the Round Dance community as well. She cues dances for clubs all across Southern California. In addition to her Round Dancing and Clogging, Dawn works part-time and is a full time mom. David and Dawn both enjoy playing cards, and spending time with family and friends!
