Christian Radich Summer voyages 2013
Join the voyages! Everyone can sail with Christian Radich. Sailing with us is a positive challenge - both physically and mentally - and it is a unique opportunity to experience one of the world s most famous windjammers. On board you will find new friends from various countries. Christian Radich has had up till 13 nations on one leg - a truly international crew! As trainee, you will participate in the duties on board according to your own condition and interests. No previous knowledge is required in order to join this historical ship. We focus on sailing as much as possible, although weather conditions may force us to utilise the engine sometimes. Everyone will join in on the duties; however it is not mandatory to enter the rig. During calm seas, trainees often practice knots, sailing skills and seamanship. To join a voyage, the age limit is 15 years old (on departure date), and 12 years when sailing with parents on non-race legs. For participants over 70, we have to accept your medical certificate of fitness. There is no upper age limit, but you must be fit enough to actively participate in the work on board. Join the Christian Radich voyages and prepare for a life changing experience!
Spring 2013 Weekend - voyage from Oslo in May It is not often Christian Radich do voyages other than in the summer season. The voyages 2013 From Norway s Fjords to Aarhus On the first leg, we will sail from Stavanger to Lysefjorden, representing spectacular scenery surrounded by mountains. The ship has participated in a tall ship festival at Stord, before sailing to Stavanger to meet the trainees. After departure, we will do training in the rig as we go into Lysefjorden to see the famous mountain Prekestolen. From south western Norway, we will sail to Aarhus, and we hope to meet our friends Statsraad Lehmkuhl and Georg Stage on our way. All the 70-80 ships that participate in Tall Ships Race gather here. Trainees can here enjoy typical Danish atmosphere and friendliness. Race 1 from Aarhus to Helsinki From Aarhus, our first destination is the Finnish capital. Helsinki is a great city, where you can see the difference between western culture and the influence from Finland s relationship with Russia. The city's architecture and design shops attracts thousands of tourists to the city every year. Christian Radich is among the favourites in the race because the ship is the most winning ship in the Tall Ships Race during the past 10 years. The regatta is quite long, but we expect good wind direction, and with a large flotilla of competitors, it will be quite an experience. "Cruise in Company" from Helsinki to Riga This is a pleasant voyage where we sail together with the other ships and visit local ports. The Tall Ships will be invited to charming ports in Finland, Estonia and Latvia before we reach the medieval city of Riga, the widely known Hansa City which was established as early as 1158. We will have an enjoyable time together with other crew and trainees from many nations. The Baltic countries have a fascinating culture, a mix of influence from Scandinavia and from Russia.
Regatta 2 from Riga to Stettin After pleasant days in Riga, we prepare for the next race with all intentions of winning the last race to Stettin a city founded before year 1000. If you want to join a short race, this leg is perfect. On this leg we expect several sailing manoeuvres to reach the finish line as number one! In Stettin, the final awards ceremony for the Tall Ships Race will take place. Stettin has been under three nations. After first being Germany s third largest port, the city became the capital of Swedish Pomerania, before becoming German again. After World War II, the city has been part of Poland. Short cruises from Stettin to Rostock / Warnemünde Our next port will be Warnemünde. The city is next to Rostock, and the whole area is characterised by a 4 day festival of sailing ships. The focus will be on cruising as opposed to pure sailing. Trainees will be able to enjoy breath taking scenery, with Rügen s long beaches and high cliffs. In this area the East German communist regime's private hotels were situated. Today, this area is open for all to enjoy and trainees will be able to enjoy this beautiful location. Warnemünde Oslo through the Danish archipelago From Warnemünde, Christian Radich will sail towards Denmark to explore the Danish archipelago. Wind and weather determines if we choose Bornholm with its amazing surrounding islands or if we will sail among the islands south of Fyn. Excursions and swimming may be a part of the experience. When returning to Oslo, we will sail with the stream up Kattegat, before the summer voyages ends with a warm welcome at the quayside in Oslo. For further information about the Tall Ships Race and ports, see www.sailtraininginternational.org
Practicalities Christian Radich can accommodate 80 trainees. Each trainee will be assigned to one of three watch teams which have 4 hours on duty and 8 hours off - both day and night. Among your duties are lookout, fire-and safety patrols, sail manoeuvres and steering, all performed under professional supervision. During races, our professional crew do most of the steering. In particular, the sail manoeuvres are demanding, but very spectacular. Entering the rig is the ultimate event to many, but it is not mandatory. The trainees sleep either in hammocks or bunk beds in two comfortable, air-conditioned orlops (dormitories) below deck. The ship has modern shower facilities, serves 3 excellent meals per day and has a small slope chest where you may buy souvenirs, toothpaste, snacks etc. Special clothing or other equipment is not necessary. Rainwear and warm, windproof clothes are perhaps the most important things to remember. Further information regarding what to bring along will be sent to you with your trainee handbook after registration.
