It is no longer mandatory that Extension staff complete the tagging and DNA. Market sheep and goats exhibited at State Fair or Ak- Sar-Ben need to be nominated with a DNA sample and EID tag (4-H and FFA use the same EID tag). DNA samples will be taken this day or you may pull your own sample if you do not wish to be included in the Rate of Gain contests. Cost of the DNA is $6.00 per animal. County Fair Ear tags will cost 60 each and EID tags will cost $2. If completing your own DNA envelopes, these MUST be at the Extension Office no later than JUNE 15th. Exhibitors will not be allowed to exhibit at the Nebraska State Fair without a Premise ID being supplied to the Extension Office. As is the past ALL Market Swine exhibitors must have a Premise ID on file to exhibit at County Fair also. The Premise ID should be obtained for the physical location of where the animals are located and housed. If the location is different than where the exhibitors live, such as a grandparent, neighbor, etc., the Premise ID needs to be obtained for the address of where the animals are located. If the animals are housed in multiple locations, a Premise ID must be obtained for each location. The Premise ID(s) will apply to more than one youth if there are multiple exhibitors housing livestock at the same location. No need to apply for a Premise ID for each youth family member. If you received a Premise ID previously, you can verify a Premise ID by calling 402-471-2351. What you need to do: Please read the flyer at http://go.unl.edu/ premiseid and follow the Steps For Obtaining Premise ID to apply for a Premise ID. Send a copy of the letter you receive from the Department of Agriculture containing your Premise ID to our office no later than May 15 or If you do not have access to your letter but know your Premise ID number(s) please complete the form at http://extension.unl.edu/statewide/ saline/pdffiles/4-h/premise%20id.pdf and send to our office by May 15. Failure to complete this requirement will make you ineligible to exhibit your animals. It is your responsibility to complete this requirement by the deadline if you want to exhibit your livestock projects. This is a transition year from the YQA site to the YQCA site. Your options are: NEW members who have never taken QA before will use the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (LQCA) site at: yqca.learngrow.io You will use your FAMILY 4HOnline login and password information (login and password your family uses to enroll in 4-H) to access the courses for the ACTIVE youth in your family. Only ACTIVE members will show in the drop down menu for access to the course. All registration questions with YQCA should be directed to help@yqca.org. There will not be local support for the YQCA program. There is a button for families that have forgotten their 4HOnline password. We do not have access to your passwords. A help sheet can be found at: http://go.unl.edu/helpforyqca Once complete, you need to print the ONE certificate and bring it to the Extension Office by the June 15th deadline. Members who used the LQA site in the past may continue to do so for this year ONLY if you paid the course fee prior to March 31 st. If you did not pay prior to March 31 st, you will then need to use the NEW LQCA site. Youth need to print off their 3 certificates for the 3 modules they have completed and bring them to the Extension Office by the June 15th deadline. LQA (old site) instructions can be found at: http://go.unl.edu/ lqainstructions If you completed your 3 modules but have not sent us your certificates, please do so ASAP> Intermediate (ages 12-14) & Senior (ages 15-18) can test out with a written test. Call our office to arrange a date to test. Studying is recommended prior to testing. All testing must be complete by the June 15th deadline. If you are unsure of your QA status, please call us BEFORE the deadline. 4-H & FFA Animal Eligibility Rule & Clarifications The deadline to ID, Tag and DNA your 4-H or FFA animals is June 15th with all forms & DNA envelopes at the Extension Office no later that June 15th. Points to keep in mind: * No one animal can be shown at two county fairs. Ex: If a market beef is shown at Saline County, the same animal CANNOT be shown in Gage county. THIS APPLIES TO ALL SPECIES! * The deadline to enter animals for the State Fair is August 10th. This is when you designate if an animal will show in the 4-H or FFA division. * Once you designate you CANNOT change. Ex: If you designated a market sheep as FFA, that animal CANNOT be shown at Ak-Sar-Ben as a 4-H animal. * If you enter a 4-H animal at the State Fair but do not show the animal or bring the animal, you CAN NOT enter that animal at Ak-Sar-Ben. Clover Kid Livestock/Rabbit ID Forms - Due June 15th or Before Clover Kids enrolled as 4-H members in clubs, as independent members or in the Afterschool program who plan to exhibit an animal (rabbit, sheep, swine, goat or bucket calf) in an Open Class show MUST complete the appropriate ID for and submit to the Extension Office by the June 15th deadline to be eligible to exhibit animals. Rabbits should have a tattoo & other livestock should have the appropriate 4-H ID tag. Tags can be purchased from the Extension Office. Jr. Fair Superintendents We would like to have a Jr. Superintendent for each specie/department. The Jr. Superintendent (13-18) would work on ribbon entry on an I-pad. If interested give us a call. No experience needed. Jr. Superintendent applicants in livestock areas may not want to be showing the specie they sign up for. This is a great opportunity to add volunteerism to your 4-H Career Portfolio.

LATE FEE POLICY REMINDER As we move closer to county fair we wanted to remind you of the Late Fee policy. Deadlines are set to allow our office time to process and send in your animal identification so you meet the required deadline. Prompt and accurate fair entries are needed to allow us time to generate reports, show programs, entry cards, etc. All of these take a lot of time or need to be reprocessed/formatted for late entries. The 4-H Council late fee policy is $10 per member for those late with Identification paperwork, and county fair entries. Identification forms and or entries may be submitted up to 5 days past the specified deadline (County Fair only) and late fee will apply. ID PAPERWORK AND ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS 5 DAY PERIOD! If you are late with State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben entries you are ineligible. Club Canned Food Drive The Saline County 4-H Council wishes to continue with our Make a Difference theme. The Council wants to do a canned food drive in our communities wrapping up with a display at the County Fair. We want 4-H ers to be involved in their communities. Our office will make labels for paper bags with the information of the pick up date your club would like to set. Clubs select a day to distribute the bags in their communities and then another date to collect them. Clubs can bring items to the Extension Office when you are done collecting. We plan to display the collected cans at the fair in the Ag Hall and then donate the items to the food bank/pantry in Saline County. Together we can Make a Difference in Saline County. Special Saline County Pollinator Project for 2017 - Get your FREE Seed Packet Today! All 4-H ers in Saline County are eligible to plant a free Wildflower Pollinator seed packet. The prime time to plant your seeds is May 1 to May 20 th. The seed mix is designed for a 10 ft by 10 ft area at the edge of your garden, a flower bed, edge of your yard, etc. We want to make a special display at this year s county fair on all of our pollinator project fair entries. Why You Should Plant Wildflower Pollinator Seed? 1 out of 3 mouthfuls of food we eat require pollination. Many plants need to be pollinated by insects, wind, and other animals like birds to produce food such as apples, Cherries, berries, nuts, vegetables, etc. Pollinator populations continue to decline due to: Habitat Loss, Pollution, Diseases and Parasites, Misuse of Pesticides, Changes in Ag Production and Competition with Introduced Species. If 100 Saline County 4-H ers plant these packets we have the potential to have new food sources on 250,000 plants. Please call our office at 402-821-2151 or stop by the Extension Office to pick up your FREE seed packet. 4-H Leaders are encouraged to pick them up for their 4-H club members if you have a May meeting. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE! Progressive Agriculture Safety Day Make plans to attend the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day for Kids on Thursday, June 22, 2017. Livestock Identification For 2017 Market animals: Both 4-H & FFA will be using EID tags and DNA for all market beef, market goats, market sheep, and market swine exhibited at the State Fair. NOTE: Ak-Sar-Ben will allow ear notches or EID tags for swine in addition to DNA. State Fair Swine is EID tag & DNA. County Fair swine will still need to be ear notched. If you have Swine that you submit DNA on and plan to show these pigs at County Fair, you MUST also complete a County Only Card (double ID) these pigs as the method for County Fair Swine ID is ear notches only. The cost of the EID tag will be $2 per tag. The cost of DNA samples will be $6 per DNA sample. Breeding animals: Animals exhibited at the State Fair and/or Ak-Sar-Ben will need to have a Breeding nomination card completed and on file at the Extension Office by June 15th. Breeding heifers will require a tattoo (4-H & FFA). Breeding sheep and goats will require a Scrapie tag for commercial animals and Scrapie tag & number matching registration papers for purebred animals. Please refer to the chart below and at this link: http://go.unl.edu/2017animalidentificationguidelines More information and form of animal identification can be found at: http://go.unl.edu/animalidentification Youth will have until Aug. 10 (State Fair online entry deadline) to declare if a particular animal will show as 4-H or FFA. However, once you declare an organization at State Fair, you may not switch for Ak-Sar-Ben (4-H show only). You will need to pick up the DNA sample envelopes and tags from our office. COUNTY FAIR - (ANIMALS SHOWN AT COUNTY FAIR ONLY) - Will use the County ONLY paperwork. WHETHER YOU SHOW AT COUNTY FAIR, STATE FAIR OR AK-SAR-BEN, YOUR ANIMALS MUST HAVE ID PAPERWORK/DNA ON FILE AT THE EXTENSION OFFICE NO LATER THAN JUNE 15TH. STATE FAIR AND AK-SAR-BEN ANIMALS MUST HAVE PREMISE ID ON FILE ALSO. Don t wait until the last minute to make your animal identifications. You will need to plan ahead. Will animals be shown at County Fair only, State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben? Identification documents are different for State Fair/Ak-Sar-Ben so you will need to know BEFORE you come to the office to get tags.
