The President s Bat Welcome to our first Hawk Talk edition for 2018/2019. I would like to send a special welcome to all those new families with the Hawks this season. This year we have a record 37 teams playing from U8 through to our Open division which is U16 to U18. This season, as with last season, we have two half season competitions, a pre-xmas and post-xmas competition. With these two separate competitions before and after Xmas it will be possible for your team to win two competitions throughout the full season. After Xmas when some players go off to play for their schools, we will re-arrange teams to fill any vacancies. This is usually only for teams from U12 upwards. This year we will be again sending out the Hawk Talk electronically. This reduces costs and certainly takes a load off the time spent by our Editor, Eddie Mills. It also allows us more flexibility to highlight the various products of our very generous sponsors. Thank you to all those people who have volunteered to be coaches or managers. This season we only had to find a few new coaches, mostly in the younger age groups, which says a great deal about our retention rate. The parents of this club appreciate the work that is being done by these wonderful people and have every confidence in the way their children are being cared for. Remember parents that this is your club and any help that you can offer makes life easier for coaches/managers/scorers and club officials. We are all volunteers. On training nights you can help out by being prompt when picking up children. Your team officials will not leave until all kids are collected so be considerate to them. On game days support your team and the opposition in a positive manner. Our children will model our behaviour. Winning humbly is as important as congratulating the opposition when they are successful. Scoring and umpiring can sometimes be very stressful so please help your team by being supportive of those who have put their hand up to do the tasks that provide games for your children. I would not like to see cricket as being a child- minding service on Saturday mornings. I would like to welcome Andrew Phan and his Coffee van to our Friday Night competition. He offers a delicious variety of coffees and hot chocolates as well as burgers, chips and toasted sandwiches. I would also like to thank the ACE Netball Club which has kindly allowed our club the use of their toilet facility for Friday night cricket. It is far too dangerous for our young cricketers to have to go over to the old clubhouse building with cars and poor lighting around those premises. Congratulations to our hard working Registrar, John Murray who has successfully placed over 350 boys and girls into those 37 teams. We do have two All girl teams in the BNJCA All Girls competition. Please be prompt with the match reports and stats reports that you send into Kathy or Eddie. All of our trophies at the end of the season are directly dependant on your match reporting. No stats = No trophies. I recommend that you support all the generous sponsors who make a significant contribution to our club and allow us to provide the excellent facilities and equipment to enable the players to achieve their playing potential. Please keep our fields tidy and remove all rubbish at the end of training and matches, There are several rubbish bins placed around the net and field areas. This applies for all grounds used during the season, i.e. schools and opposition fields Restrooms at all grounds are for everyone s use and convenience. Please leave them in a tidy condition and report any issues to your team manager. When entering the South Pine Sports Complex at any time, please travel at the signed speed limit for everyone s safety, especially during night cricket when visibility is limited. Please park only in designated parking spots and refrain from parking on lawns around the complex. Please ensure that net and field lights are turned off at the end of training sessions. Non-club members can not utilise the lights at any times and the lock codes are made available to club coaches for Hawks members only. We frequently find items left behind after matches or training. Please ensure to check your areas for any items before leaving the field. If you have left something behind you can email us on accc@albanycricketclub.com.au. Generally any lost items are kept in our club canteen for a short period of time until claimed.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PARENTS - TEAM PLACEMENT POLICY We do not grade players at Albany Creek Cricket Club. It is the policy of the club to attempt to place players according to the individual requests of the players. If no special requests are made, players will be placed in the appropriate age group. To make it simpler for existing players to register for the next season, we will provide pre-filled registration forms on our club sign-on weekend. Please note - the registration form and the club s webpage form provides a special request section, so that parents can make requests for team placement as per examples: Same team as last year With Matthew Hayden With players form All Saints School Registrations are also accepted by mail, email or via MyCricket and the Hawks webpage. Please note that registration forms must still be completed for the MyCricket option and forwarded to the Registrar. Towards the end of each season we will publish the dates for next season s sign-on weekend in the newsletter and on the club s Webpage and Facebook page. We would also like to remind all parents to ensure that any changes in contact details are forwarded to the club to avoid missing out. Increasing player numbers each year make the administrative task of organising teams more difficult. At the beginning of each season our registrar invests a great deal of time reviewing all player requests before allocating players to individual teams. This commences on Sign-on weekend and continues over several weeks, with new registrations and late registrations coming in right until (and sometimes well after) the season s first game. So please be sure about your special requests, it is extremely difficult to accommodate any late changes once the teams are formed. The process of sorting teams is long and involved and moving players around after it has started creates a logistical nightmare, especially since we also have to work around a deadline for nominating teams to the Brisbane North Junior Cricket Association. We have in excess of nearly 300 players to keep happy, therefore if registrations are not received before and by the sign-on weekend, or the registrar is not advised of a player s intent to return and preferred playing arrangements, special requests can only be met if there is room in the nominated team. GENERAL ADMINISTRATION Any Cricket Problems? All Committee phone numbers are listed on page 3: From: The Albany Creek Cricket Club Committee You have all had a little time to settle in and see how your team is going. Are there any problems? Please don t think now that the season has started that you are on your own. Phone and talk to any committee member or alternatively, approach your coach and we will try and fix what we can. Helmet Policy It is club policy that all Batsmen MUST wear a helmet when batting. Wicket-Keepers MUST wear a helmet if keeping up close to the stumps, regardless of the style of bowling. This is a Cricket Australia and Brisbane North Junior Cricket Association rule and as such non-negotiable. NO HELMET NO PLAY!! Batting Gloves Protectors Zone Rules 2.2 (d), (e), (f), (g) & (h) require ALL players to wear protection when batting - helmets, pads and gloves are available in each team kit. All players are issued with a personal protector when registering and MUST use them. Safety - Wet & Cold Playing cricket can be extremely hot, so please ensure that player safety is a priority when deciding on the need to leave the field for a spell or not. It is important to ensure that all players apply sunscreen before the match and re-apply during every break. Players should wear a wide-brimmed hat and take regular drink breaks throughout the innings. In the event of rain consider player safety when assessing the field conditions to avoid slipping and dangerous play. Do not commence the match if the oval is deemed unsafe and wait for conditions to improve or make a decision to possibly abandon the match if necessary. DON T PUT PLAYERS AT RISK!!! Coach s Responsibilities The coach runs the team. The coach is responsible for preparation of the players and control during the match. Batting and bowling orders are the coach s responsibility. It is recommended that from U13 upwards, a captain is appointed to run the team, particularly when fielding. The Hawks expect ALL coaches to have a basic Level 1 Coaching Certificate. It is the coach s responsibility to enforce the club s helmet policy and ensure that players wear all protective equipment as outlined above. Manager s Responsibilities The manager assists the coach with the team administration. The manager should ensure that rostered parents are available to attend canteen duties (as required), act as umpires, scorers and generally assist players and team management throughout the game and training, i.e. organising batsmen to get ready. Managers are responsible for the publication and recording of match results and team statistics. U8 to U10 match abstracts are to be emailed to our statistician directly, U11 to Open Divisions must enter their match stats into the MyCricket online database. Under 11 to Open managers will also forward player of the round nominations to BNJCA as outlined in the coach s/ manager s manual.

How Are The Winners Of Team Trophies Determined? We like to remind everyone at the start of the season about how the trophy winners are determined for the team awards, so here s the drum: At the end of the season, there are three trophies awarded for each team: 1. Batting Award 2. Bowling Award 3. Coaches Award In the past there has been some confusion as to how the winners of these trophies are determined. Set out below are the basic guidelines used to determine the winners: 1. The Batting Award is always decided first. The best average is used to determine the winner in senior grades [U11 Open Divisions] while the junior grades [U8 U10] are determined by the best aggregate total {unless there is a draw, in which case averages will be used to determine the winner]. For senior grades, this player MUST have played in 50% or more of the team matches and be in the top 50% of run scorers. The Batting Average is calculated by dividing the number of times the batter has been out into the total runs scored for the season e.g. 125 runs divided by 5 outs will give an average of 25.0. 2. The Bowling Award is decided second. [The winner of the Batting Award is not eligible for this award.] Again, the best average is used to determine the winner in senior grades [U11 Open Divisions] while the junior grades [U8 U10] are determined by the best aggregate total {unless there is a draw, in which case averages will be used to determine the winner]. For senior grades, this player MUST have played in 50% or more of the team matches and be in the top 50% of wicket takers. The Bowling Average is calculated by dividing the number of wickets taken by the bowler into the number of runs scored against. e.g. 100 runs against divided by 5 wickets will give an average of 20.0. 3. For example, the Coach may decide to award it to a player who may not have been amongst the best batters or bowlers but had displayed a great attitude towards the game, his team and his coach, both on match day and at training. Individual Trophies!! There are also lots of other trophies award for certain milestones and events. For example: Hat Tricks 5 or more Wickets in an Innings (U11 Open Divisions) 4 x 50 runs in an innings (U11 Open Divisions) Centuries 50 Wickets in junior (U8-U10) or senior (U11 Open Divisions) age group 1,000 Runs in junior (U8-U10) or senior (U11 Open Divisions) age group Cricketer of the Year (U11 Open Divisions) Half-Season Cricketer of the Year (U11 Open Divisions) Significant milestones and events are also tracked in our Honour Board. This is a wonderful living file that records an archive of our clubs history, including the top 10 junior and senior batsmen and bowlers for the season. All coaches, managers, captains and anyone else with delegated responsibility for players, are instructed to exercise extreme caution during thunderstorms. The 30/30 rule is to be applied: (a) if lightning and thunder are separated by a period of less than 30 seconds, the lightning is close enough to be a threat. You are to leave the field or training area immediately and seek shelter in a building or motor vehicle not under trees. (b) A period of 30 minutes should elapse before play is resumed, that is, after seeing the last lightning flash, wait 30 minutes before leaving shelter. If during this time lightning is again observed, contrary to the 30/30 rule, the 30 minutes will start again. (c) Common sense should also prevail and caution must be exercised. If lightning is observed in your vicinity, leave the field. Do not hesitate to take the initiative and lead your players off if the opposition and/or umpires do not agree. This regulation applies to all junior and senior matches. Safety of all involved is paramount and not negotiable.

Having lost the toss and having to bowl, we bowled quite well, with wickets being shared around. We encountered only 2 opposition batsmen who showed resistance, otherwise we took wickets regularly. Regardless, in the wicketless periods, our bowlers were very patient and continued to bowl good line and length. Spin was the pick for the day, with Salts and Danny taking 5 wickets between them. The rest were shared around. Our batting was also quite good, with most getting a start, but no one going big. Andrew suffered a back injury and retired hurt, and bravely came back at the end while we were still needing another 30 runs with only 1 wicket in hand. Unfortunately, we fell 6 runs short. Going back out into the field for the 2nd innings, with just under 2 hours left in the days play, we tore them to shreds. Matt got rid of their best bat with his first ball, albeit a full toss, and from there, Matt continued to rip through them, eventually taking 7/21 from 7 overs. There was a fair bit of time wasting by the opposition during their collapsing innnings, and when we bowled them out, we were allowed only 6 overs to chase the 40 runs needed for victory. Casey and Salts got us going at 5 an over for the first 4 overs. Sam made 7 from 3 balls, and coming down to the last ball of the day, we needed 2 to tie and 3 to win. Salts was on strike, took an almighty swing, inside edging it down to fine leg. While we were all looking down to fine leg to see if it went for 4, when it was fielded by the opposition, we looked back to see Salts on the ground with his stumps scattered. It winding up for the shot, Salts ripped his knee apart, and fell onto his stumps, ending the days play. We all sat with Salts on the pitch drinking beer, eating peanuts and waiting for the ambulance to arrive as night fell. Fortunately for us, Salts injury hasn't turned out to be as bad as first thought, and he will be back in 3-6 weeks. Salts had a mammoth game, almost getting us home, but Man of the Match goes to Matt for his lethal spell of bowling, and career best to date figures. Their opening bowler was express, but Danny and Col dug in and did manage to see him off, putting together a 51 run partnership in Andrew's absence. That set the tone for the day, and partnerships continued all the way through. Not big partnerships, but partnerships on time. Time in the middle is what is needed at this level, and given time, the runs will flow. Danny was superb, making his half century before a momentary lapse in concentration cost him. Everyone else contributed, and late rearguard action from Ric and Matt put on 30 in 5 overs against Fabish-Wood, before the rain came and ended the days play. Unfortunately, no play was possible on day 2 due to rain, and the game ended in a draw. For me, the significant thing from this game is the way we played against Fabish-Wood. There was a lot of nerves around about how quick he was, but he bowled 16 overs for the day for only 1 wicket. Concentration levels went up, and he was played with caution (except for Ric and Matt, who dispatched him regularly to the boundary, Matt from the Flamingo stance). The down side of this, and my innings is a good case in point, is that after we got through each spell from Fabish-Wood, we relaxed and didn't take full toll of the more pedestrian bowling. The concentration needs to continue, especially for the period after the bowling change while we adapt to the slower bowling. Something for us all to work on. GAME REPORT: An excellent game from both teams, which was played in great spirits. We had 3 players on debut, Cooper C, Cooper R and Blake, congratulations boys. We batted well with Kai top-scoring, including 5x4 s and one hook-shot for 6, what an amazing shot! Cooper R also batted well, impressing with his good running between wickets. In the field all boys were always on their toes, ready for the run-out. Fletcher led the way with his 3 run-outs. Cooper C bowled with excellent technique and was quick to get behind the stumps to assist with the run-outs. Man of the match went to Blake for excellent fielding and a near classic catch off his own bowling. Well done boys, an excellent start to the season and good luck next week. Behavior and concentration was great from everyone for this the first game. It s amazing what a year of growing-up can do. This year we welcomed two new players, Kaiden Bellero and Matilda Wedgwood, both of whom got stuck right in hitting boundaries and getting run outs. Tom Deem had a cracking first game back with impressive batting, bowling and fielding and was a close contender for Player of the Match. That honor however went to Kaiden Bellero who, in his first game of cricket hit the only six for the night and finished with respectable bowling figures as well. GAME REPORT: On a wet ground finally the Whites Hawks played their first game of the season where they enjoyed giving their parents some lovely non-white, whites, by the end of the game!! They did this in remarkable fashion as a result of some desperate fielding as seen by the number of runouts posted. In batting, there was some awesome displays by our six hitting masters, Mitchell Ring (4 sixes), followed closely by Jack O'Sullivan (2 sixes) and Nicholas Lawrence (1 six). Everyone else batted well considering our first game dusted the cobwebs off. The bowling from the boys was magnificent. Nicholas and Mitchell packing the punch with 4 wickets each and the rest, even though didn t take any wickets, kept up the pressure with solid deliveries. GAME REPORT: After the first week being washed out, the game against the Albany Creek Eagle Hawks turned into a one day game. Playing against a very good side the Hawks put the opposition in who made a very good score of 1/188 after their 26 overs. Pawan was the sole wicket taker for the team with figures of 1/13 for his two overs. Well bowled to Harry as well who bowled his overs without any wides or no balls. It was then the Hawks turn to bat and with some great bowling from the opposition it was always going to be a tough challenge chasing down the runs. Some early retirees due to illness and injury also didn t help with the team making 52 in total. Well done to Thomas and Pawan who performed well against some very good bowling. While the end result was a loss it was good to be back out playing cricket with the boys looking forward to next week s game. It was the Otto show in the field, them being the only ones who could hold onto a catch all day, except for Casey who grabbed 2 behind the stumps. We allowed them to make a lot more than they should have with dropped catches and 26 extras, but 177 should have been gettable. We came to bat, and the bowling was a lot more pedestrian compared to Fabish-Wood Express. We were looking good at 3/93, but then the wheels fell off, and we capitulated to be all out for 124. We are backing up well and getting our hands ready has the bowler comes in. GAME REPORT: Lost the toss and were sent into field. Our first time trying to contain a team and then chase their total. Brooklyn and Kallum with the help of the fielders took early wickets, while in our middle overs we tried to contain their scoring. In the later overs Saoirse and Owen aimed straight to contain the free swinging of the opposition. Whilst batting Shabad and Kallum and Micaiha accelerated our scoring with running between the wickets a highlight. Param was named player of the match for good allround effort in the field and with the bat and ball. In particular the development he has made in judging a quick single. In the end we just lost, but I was proud of our effort. Matilda won the toss for the team and decided to have a bat. Everyone chipped in with runs with Tom Dixon, Tom Deem, Kaiden and Sam topping the batting scores. Having posted an impressive score the team took the field and enthusiastically defended the total. Charlie and Matilda showed great form with ball and Fin managed to slip one past the bat to hit middle stump. Good performances all around with Sam awarded Player of the Match for hitting his PB score and taking two run outs. Thanks Team I look forward to doing it again next week. After everyone got to know each other last week it was really great to see team spirit this week. Everyone cheered when Caden took his first wicket this season. In the batting Coby, Reilly and Marcus took full advantage of the conditions with scores in the mid to high 20 s, and Hudson scored his highest ever score to top the batting. Well done White Hawks!! The Green Hawks found batting difficult with some good bowling from the Black Hawks team. Danny Costello was the standout with a flurry of 3 late boundaries. Eamon Loth was good support for Danny, and all batsmen accumulated runs throughout a lower scoring innings. The Green Hawks knew they needed to bowl and field well to defend their total. Samuel Imlay was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, supported by Hayden Wiltshire, Sean Lavery and Kohen Cozzi-Delaney with one wicket each. The team picked up eight wickets in total thanks to four great catches and two last over run-outs which sealed the win. Both teams played the game with great spirit, competitiveness and a wonderful skill level. GAME REPORT: Another great performance by the Red Hawk boys and girl. The game was played in quite long grass due to an issue with the schools mower, but that didn t stop the Red Hawks amassing 218, a score that was too big for the scorebook s progressive total to handle! They lived by the motto there s no grass in the air as proven by a total of 11 sixes. Mitchell hit 5 of them on his way to 65. In the field the Red Hawks were again sharp and most chances were taken. The wickets were shared around and Jackson capped an excellent day with the best bowling figures after his 47 with the bat and some tidy wicket-keeping. GAME REPORT: The sun was out, grounds were dry and we were set for a great match. And the boys didn t let us down. The final result came down to just three (3) runs difference. Great cricket all round by both teams. Our batters knocked the ball around nicely with top score going to Mitchell Ring, followed very closely by Nicholas Lawrence and Kyan Lloyd. The White Hawks bowling was nice and tight by all the boys. Nicholas Lawrence topped the bowling. Eddie Crown also bowled his one over nicely. The boys fielded lovely even though they had to contend with Sandgate bugs flying around their faces for the first session and used their hats as swats. Great Game White Hawks. Highlights in the field were Thomas Quine with a HAT-TRICK and a 5 wicket haul with 5 for 1! Well done Tom! Dylan and Sam backed up the bowling with 1/2 and 1/3 respectively. Super effort to take 17 of their wickets! Some more practice on our running between the wickets is needed and also improving our batting technique to stop the straight ones from hitting our stumps!! Every batsman improved on their previous weeks score with Luke again leading the way with 36 runs in a great display of batting. Great bowling as well with our length being our best factor making it hard for the other team to score. The highlight of the day however was Jakes one handed catch off a full-blooded pull shot. If you can t find your team in the newsletter, it s not that we forgot about you, but we can only report news we know about. Please remember to update match results and player stats as soon as possible for our statistician and forward match reports to our editor utilising the club s Dropbox. The date for the next newsletter issue is 22 nd cut-off for any stats and reports is the night before. November and Our Statistician Kathy and Editor Eddie, respectively, spend many hours compiling the player achievements and finalising the newsletter to ensure we don t miss anyone based on the information we have available. It can become tedious and extremely time consuming, if we have to constantly chase all 37 Junior and 3 Senior teams to forward the needed information. Please submit your team s reports with the deadline in mind to avoid disappointing our Junior Hawks, we know how much the players like to see their name in print.. Remember - We can t acknowledge what we don t know about and it must be submitted to us through official reports, including all relevant details about matches or player achievements. Lastly, please update MyCricket as soon as possible after each completed match, failing to do so, will result in the match being locked on the webpage and match and/or player stats can no longer be added, affecting team points and player awards.
