The winner of the Rose & Baby Ruth award (the couple who were married the longest) went to Joan and Mike Slowik who have been married 56 years. They were both a child bride & groom! Also, at the Valentine s Day dance we presented our donations to the charities our club supports. To the New Hope Clinic here in Brunswick County we presented a check in the amount of $1,000. Then, later in the evening we presented to VFW Post #10266 a check for $6,500 to be used for their Operation Uplink program that provides prepaid phone cards to our service men and women to have the opportunity to stay in touch with family members and friends while they are away. We also had our second Sunday Series at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill and DJ Chigger Woods played the best in beach music. We had a nice turnout for that dance. The last dance of the month was our famous chili cook-off. We had 11 entries in the categories of flavorful, spicy, and vegetarian. The 108 members who attended that dance each had an opportunity to taste all the chili and to vote for their favorites. The overall winner was Katy O Neill. The flavorful winner was Fred Raines; the spicy winner was Dean & Beth Jones; and the vegetarian winner was Joe Malinowski. February was a huge success for the club and we re looking forward to another fun shag filled March. See you on the dance floor! Chuck Boney, President SOS Spring Safari is being held on April 20-29, 2018 in North Myrtle Beach, SC. The parade and our club Free Pour is on April 28, 2018. See page 6 for more information! M a r c h 2 0 1 8 T h e Beac h B e a t! P a g e 5 SOS History (The Short Version) (This information is based on history articles found at www.shagdance.com, the official website of SOS and ACSC.) The Society of Stranders (SOS) holds events each year in North Myrtle Beach, SC, during the months of January, April, and September. SOS is a gathering of dancers dedicated to the perpetuation and preservation of the Shag Dance, Beach Music, and the atmosphere surrounding the Dance. The First SOS occurred in the Spring of 1980. It was held as a reunion of all of the former Lifeguards, Stranders, and Beach Bums of years past. They expected a crowd of two or three hundred, but thousands showed up. This was the start of something BIG. The parties continued yearly, but organization was lacking. Some of this problem was alleviated by replacing bands and dance contests with DJ s. SOS grew through the mid to late 80 s, but encountered difficulties in 1988 and 1989. The founder of SOS, Gene Laughter, approached The Association of Carolina Shag Clubs (ACSC) in February of 1989 about buying the venue. The ACSC (formed in 1984) did so and encountered difficulties with local night clubs not requiring SOS membership for admittance. At this time it was decided to compensate the clubs for floor space during the SOS functions in order to make up for lost revenues from their regular patrons. This is why we purchase SOS Membership Cards for the Mid-Winter, Spring Safari, and Fall Migration parties. Our Membership fees also pay for outdoor concerts, as well as food and trams. This said I invite all SOBS to buy a Membership card to SOS and come down to North Myrtle Beach SC (Ocean Drive) anytime during Mid-Winter (January), Spring Safari (April), or the Fall Migration (September) SOS events. The Spring Safari features a Parade down Main Street while the Fall Migration features Fun Sunday and Fun Monday free concerts outside. Check www.shagdance.com for dates and entertainment lineups. Butch Underwood, SOBS Cub Reporter (Gone, but not forgotten.. he ll probably be at our tailgate party!)

M a r c h 2 0 1 8 T h e Beac h B e a t! P a g e 6 It s SOS Spring Safari Parade & SOBS Free Pour, Saturday, April 28, 2018... The SOBS will be defending 2017 s award of First Place Shag Troupe! What is SOS you ask? Three times a year the parent organization of shag, Society of Stranders (SOS) holds huge dance events known as SOS. Nearly 100 clubs up and down the East Coast constitute the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs (ACSC) and their members take part in the festivities. All SOS events take place in the Ocean Drive/North Myrtle Beach area of SC. Yearly SOS cards may be purchased at the event for $35 or through our club for $30. The card allows you entrance without a cover charge to any of the night clubs/venues during SOS. All clubs are within walking distance of one another. More information on SOS will be provided as we get closer to the date! This year s SOS April 28 th parade theme is Blast From the Past. Here s the plan... our parade entry will be entitled Those were the Days! Based on black & white TV shows of the 50 s & 60 s (Beverly Hillbillies, Bonanza, I Love Lucy, and the Twilight Zone) our Shagging Troupe entry will consist of SOBS dressed in black & white portraying characters of the shows: The Beverly Hillbillies (Sonny & Debby Gentry and Cathy & Francis Meyers) 4 individuals walking/carrying cardboard TV screens with the shows titles Many SOBS walking, handing out Mardi Gras beads, 8 walkers holding signs reading Blast, From, The, and Past. The parade is approximately ½ mile and DJ Jim Bruno will be playing his music for us along the route. If it sounds like fun, IT IS, and you will enjoy our legendary tailgate party. Last year we had nearly 70 participants! More information will follow as we finalize our parade plans! Please contact us if you re interested in being part of the fun. Call Katy O Neill and John Hutton (910) 201-9993 or email jsh66@earthlink.net or text: (910) 619-8265 Show Your Club Logo... Hey SOBS! SOS Spring Safari is coming April 20-29 and our tailgate party, parade entry, and club Free Pour on Saturday, April 28 th. We ll be mingling with a couple thousand of our closest SHAG friends in North Myrtle Beach. You can now show your club colors & loyalty by having a personal item embroidered by fellow SOBS member, Beth Uhl. The logo is depicted here on the right and can be embroidered on polo shirts, button-up shirts, towels (like we don t sweat much during the Summer months!) and tote bags. The cost is only $15 and will be completed within 10 days to 2 weeks. Proudly wear our logo gear at SOS and other shag events! See Beth at one of our dances or contact her at (910) 880-0104 for pick-up and delivery options.

M a r c h 2 0 1 8 T h e Beac h B e a t! P a g e 7 Shaggin on the Seas Shag Cruise 2018... Our 5-day Bahamas cruise, departed from Charleston, SC and was one of the best, yet. From February 11-16, six SOBS and a host of new friends learned new shag steps from Sam & Lisa West and danced every night away. We visited Nassau and the port of Princess Cay on the island of Eluthera, enjoying beautiful weather and fun excursions. Club members John Hutton & Katy O Neill, Karen & Bill Critcher and Phillip Kaiser & Debra Biddle enjoyed the comradery, dancing to music of DJ Buck Crumpton, and great conversation during this relaxing cruise. Coastal Shag Club members Layne & Wanda and OD shag club members Wayland and Jane joined us for the evening events. The group of 150+ shaggers, coordinated by Cruise Planners Joe & Sherrill Brown enjoyed a complimentary bottle of wine per cabin, private venue dancing daily, two days of morning and afternoon dance lessons with Sam & Lisa West, a cocktail party, and fun games. We made new friends, heard new music we liked and spent time in the beautiful azure waters of the Bahamas. This cruise, departing as it did from Charleston made for a nice winter get-away on the Carnival Ecstasy. This smaller ship of the Carnival line offered all the amenities of a larger ship without the crowds. The shows were good, the food and dining room service brought compliments from our group and our cabin service was excellent. Excursions coordinated by Carnival were well organized, we went on a bicycle excursion and had a great experience. John & Katy and Bill & Karen went on a snorkeling adventure exploring an underwater sculpture garden, eerily pleasant in Karen s words. What a treat to swim in the Atlantic in the middle of February. There was something for everyone on these islands, whether shopping, strolling, kicking back on the beach or finding happiness relaxing around the pool or elsewhere on board the ship. Shag cruises abound, John and I are signed up for the 5-day Carnival Ecstasy Bahama bound Spooktacular cruise with the Holiday Band over Halloween. This will be our 3 rd cruise with this award-winning band. Fellow SOBS Tom Milner and Sandy Johnson are on board as well. There s still room, so contact John if you want information. Have YOU been on a shag cruise and had fun? Let your fellow SOBS know, we d love to read about it here in our newsletter. The more the merrier! Cruise Planners Joe & Sherrill Brown DJ Buck Crumpton SOBS and Friends (missing Karen & Bill)

M a r c h 2 0 1 8 T h e Beac h B e a t! P a g e 8 WELCOME to our New Members & Guests... Our Valentine s Day dance on February 9 th had a nice turnout of 49 SOBS, 13 Re-Ups, and 9 Guests. Another club favorite, DJ Terry McPhail kept us dancing and played all our favorites. The wedding anniversary dance finished with our loving couple Mike & Joan Slowik who have been married 58 years! A big thanks goes out to all who decorated the dance hall and brought snacks & desserts to share! Our Chili Cook-Off dance on February 23 rd had 81 SOBS, 6 Re-Up and 22 guests as DJ Jimmy Buffkin entertained us all evening with his great beach music collection. The 11 chili cook-off entries kept everyone satisfied as I personally saw some folks going for seconds and thirds! Congratulations to Katy O Neill for being the Overall winner. And, thanks to Sandy Boney and her friend for the great decorations! Thank you all for a great evening! WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST SOBS! Correction: In last month s newsletter I incorrectly listed a New SOBS member as Paula Crawford. It should be PHILIP CRAWFORD. My bad and thanks for bringing it to my attention! From our Friends at Coastal Shag Club (CSC)... Coastal Shag Club shag dances are on the 3 rd Saturday of each month at the Moose Lodge, 253 Holden Beach Road, Shallotte, NC. Cost is $5 for CSC members and members of other Shag Clubs, $8/all other guests. Doors open at 6:30 PM and dance is 7:00 to 10:30 PM. M a r c h 2 0 1 8 T h e Beac h B e a t! P a g e 9 March DJ Information... Fellow SOBS The year has gotten off to a great start. What a way to start the year with DJ s Claude Collins and Fessa John Hook. All had a great time at our three dances and the Bar-B-Q at Re-Up was excellent. Spinning the discs for our three, yes three, dances this month will be: Friday, March 9 th - DJ Kitty Earles @ OKI VFW Sunday, March 18 th - DJ Jerry Burrage @ The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill Friday, March 23 rd - DJ Robert Carter @ OKI Moose Lodge Kitty Earles is originally from Virginia and has played for us in the past. Last month at the Coastal Shag Club dance she played all our requests. Kitty has been a DJ for over 20 years and plays regularly at Fat Harold s Beach Club, Saville s Night Club, and the other clubs in the North Myrtle Beach area. Kitty is a great dancer and enjoys teaching shag. She and her husband now call Calabash home. Kitty is a member of the Association of Beach and Shag Club DJs. Come out and enjoy an evening with DJ Kitty Earles. Jerry Burrage will be playing our Sunday Series dance at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill for March. Jerry has played for our club many times over the years and has been a Christmas Party tradition for as long as I can remember. He and his wife Marilyn are Hall of Fame dancers and have danced in Shag competition for many years. Jerry has been spinning and collecting tunes for 30+ years. He is one of the house DJs at the landmark Ocean Drive Pavilion and has played there for over 25 years. He has served as Vice-President of the Association of Beach and Shag Club DJs. John Hutton, DJ Selection Former SOBS President Robert Carter will be playing our 3 rd dance in March at the Moose Lodge. Robert is a longtime SOBS club member. Robert played our club s first Valentine s dance and has been playing for us ever since. He began his DJ career at Shucker s/turtle Island on Oak Island and has been associated with Beach, Shag, Boogie and Blues music for the last 40+ years. Mark your calendar for a great evening of dancing with Robert. Wow, another month of great dance opportunities ahead. It is going to be a great year. Katy and I will miss all the March dances. We will be on a long planned trip. Unfortunately we won t be doing much Shag dancing where we are going.

M a r c h 2 0 1 8 T h e Beac h B e a t! P a g e 10 On Behalf of VFW Post #10226 and New Hope Clinic THANK YOU, SOBS! Thanks to the generous members of our community and the SOBS, this year s Operation Uplink was again an outstanding success. Whether you attended, solicited, donated or sold your tickets this year, a heartfelt thanks from your Event Chairs, Katy O Neill & Patti Smith. Thanks too, to all those who gave of their time and talents in whatever capacity. The auction, raffles and ticket sales raised an unprecedented $7,393 for our charities. At our February 9, 2018 dance, SOBS President Chuck Boney presented to the OKI VFW Post #10226 a check for $6,000. The VFW's "Operation Uplink" has been our prime charity over the years and it was reported that we have donated over to $50,000 to date. The SOBS are to be commended for helping such a worthwhile project. Go to www.societyofbrunswickshaggers.com and click on "Our Charities" page for information on "Operation Uplink." In the picture (L to R) is SOBS Treasurer, Dennis Faver; VFW Quartermaster, Harold Woodin; SOBS President, Chuck Boney; VFW Jr. Vice Commander, Brad Louver; and SOBS Vice-President, John Hutton. Also, during our February 9, 2018 dance, we presented a check of $1,000 to the New Hope Clinic here in Brunswick County. They now operate a 4,000 sq. ft. facility in Boiling Spring Lakes, NC where they provide care five days per week, and limited services are offered at a satellite clinic in Shallotte. In addition to primary medical care, they offer specialty clinics for urology, EKG, dental, diabetes treatment, and medical eye care. A small staff and over 150 volunteers, including doctors, dentists, FNPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, medical & dental assistants, and administrative support personnel, contribute over 10,000 volunteer hours to provide nearly 6,000 patient encounters annually. Pictures from our February 9 th Valentine s Day dance @ OKI VFW Our Valentine s Day dance on February 9th had a nice turnout of 49 SOBS, 13 Re-Ups, and 9 Guests. Another club favorite, DJ Terry McPhail kept us dancing and played all our favorites. Terry held a wedding anniversary dance that finished with our loving couple Mike & Joan Slowik who have been married 56 years! A big thanks goes out to all who decorated the dance hall and brought snacks & desserts to share!

Pictures from our February 23 rd Chili Cook-Off dance @ OKI Moose Lodge Our Chili Cook-Off dance on February 23 rd had 81 SOBS, 6 Re-Up and 22 guests as DJ Jimmy Buffkin entertained us all evening with his great beach music collection. The 11 chili cook-off entries kept everyone satisfied as I personally saw some folks going for seconds and thirds! And, thanks to Sandy Boney and her friend for the great decorations! Thank You All for a great evening!
