May/June 2018 Coolangatta Bowls & Recreation Club Inc Phone: 55 366677 Chairman s Report The last two months have been extremely busy as we have collated all the information from the member s survey, undertaken bathroom renovations and prepared for upcoming strategic planning meetings early in May. The following were the results from the member s survey. 1. You like our friendly atmosphere, our great location, our staff and our bowling greens and activities. 2. You dislike the quality of the greens, the clubroom décor and structure and personnel of the relevant committees. 3. You see dwindling membership in the future as our main threat and the need to plan for a new business as our greatest need. The Board has reacted to these issues by:- 1. Putting a green management plan to our contractors. 2. Appointing a décor committee to be chaired by Dee Jones. 3. Examining the committee structure so that appropriate recommendations can be made at our AGM 4. Starting a program to attract new bowlers to our club through Jack Attack, Corporate Days and barefoot bowls promotions in the Coolangatta area. In addition we hope to have a final strategic plan in place by the end of May so that we can complete our initial application to Gold Coast City Council for a renewal of our lease (there will still be two steps further before our renewal can be approved) The Strategic Planning Committee which will meet on 7 May is as follows:- Board Members: Andy Brathwaite Bruce Skilton Dee Jones Steve Morris Committee Members: Luke Gray Marilyn Hastie Club Members: Bruce Malouf John Rossiter Liz Nicol After all this we will be hosting, for the 3 rd year, some competition days of the Australian Open busy times! Andy
Men s President Just a few words about matters happening at the Club. 1. Smoking There are just 3 areas on the club premises and they are the only 3 places where anyone can smoke. If you are a smoker please make yourself familiar with them. Large fines apply for both the member and the Club if anyone is caught smoking outside these areas. 2 Dress standards This only applies to one or two people but please, the only acceptable shirts when bowling are either a recognised bowling shirt or at the very least a shirt with a collar. Inside the clubhouse and roll ups a collarless T shirt is acceptable. While on this subject some of you may have noticed a few members, myself included wearing thongs while bowling. These are OOFOS brand and have been approved by Bowls Australia for wear at all levels of bowls. Don t forget Pennant season is approaching and it is time to consider if you wish to play Pennant and to enter your name. We intend to keep Saturday afternoon pairs going right through the Pennant season this year. Regards and good bowling Trevor Ladies President On the 14 March we celebrated the Clubs Birthday and Patrons Day, another lovely day of bowls and a delicious light lunch. The Fiesta Triples was a great success 34 teams, most we have had for the last few years, thanks to those ladies from our Club who go away to play at other Clubs armed with flyers and keen to inform other players of what is occurring at our Club. Another big thanks to all the volunteers on this day especially the men who gave up their time to assist us, these events don t just happen, without a lot of planning from your committee and again our Provedore organised another great meal. As I will be away for 2 weeks in May my Vice President Marilyn Hastie will be in charge. I would also like to wish Dee Jones a very happy 70 th Birthday. Yvonne
Men s Games Co-Ordinator Congratulations to Division 3 and Division 6 players in the Seven 7 s competition both Divisions made it to qualifying, a mighty effort from a little Club. On the 14 April a break up for this competition was held it was incorporated in the Saturday Jackpot pairs and after the game we enjoyed drinks and another great meal prepared by Maria Anesbury, thank you to the helpers especially John Rossiter who stepped in to cook the bbq for us. It has been a busy time preparing for our Clubs foray into Jack Attack, the two bowls triples format of 2 sets of 5 ends which commences at 5.30 pm on Wednesday 2 May. The Club has aimed participation at prospective bowlers in an attempt to increase our membership and get more bowlers into the game. Check out the Cooly Website and Facebook page if you would like to join in. Club Championships are progressing well with the Super Vets 0/80 (J Neill) and the Triples (J Neill, P Jefferies and A Gray) completed. The Fours and A Singles are nearly done. Apart from a few medical delays everything is on target. Thanks to all members for their co-operation and patience. Entries for the Coolangatta Bonanza are coming through at a good rate, so if you are considering playing get your entry in quick smart. Entries required for the 2018 Pennant Competition which starts Saturday 7 July, nomination sheet on Notice Board. Ladies Games Co-Ordinator Our Fiesta Triples was held on the 23 April we had 34 entries (102 ladies) from 19 Clubs. Thank you to all who worked so hard behind the scenes to ensure the successful running of this tournament. The weather held, the toilets were unfinished but we coped, the food was great and we had many winners, congratulations to all. The Ladies A grade singles and pairs championships are reaching the semi-final stage with the Fours already decided, the successful winners being Lin Phillips, Sue Somerset, Miriam Jackson and Maria Anesbury. B Grade singles and pairs competition will start in May, with the list now up on the Notice Board awaiting nominations. Wednesday ladies social bowls and Friday morning open jackpot pairs are still struggling with numbers but with some visitors arriving for winter we are hoping for an increase. At the moment Wednesday open afternoon pairs is proving popular and will continue on the third Wednesday of the month at least until a new committee is in place in September. We are holding a Friendship Day on 30 May where members invite a member from another Club to come along and enjoy a morning of bowls and a light lunch. Also on the 25 June we are having our Annual Cancer Charity Day mixed 3 bowl triples 18 ends with a light lunch, this year we are asking men to wear blue and ladies to wear pink. On 27 June we are asking all members to bring along a non- bowling friend to introduce them to the joys of bowling. Although the final format of the day has not yet been decided it should be a fun morning, with hopefully some ladies being bitten by the bowling bug. Don t forget to get your names in for Pennant, list is up on Notice Board. Hope to see you on the green.
