4 4 Get Well wishes SECRETARY S REPORT: Phil Marshall 13 We wish a speedy recovery to any Members who have not been feeling well of late and hope to see you on the greens real soon. The Board held its monthly meeting on 22 nd May to conduct routine business and approve expenditure. Applications from 2 new bowlers were approved bringing our total bowling membership to (98 ladies and 201 men) which is not too different to last year. The operating profit for April was $8,100 with all cost centres (including the restaurant) showing a positive return. The outstanding loan balance has dropped below $200,000 and based on current repayments will be repaid early. Thanks were recorded for Snow Woollett who replaced the tops on the outdoor tables great job Snow - and to Noel Harm for his contribution as Deputy Chairman for the last 6 years. SAUSAGE SIZZLE FUNDRAISING BBQ General Business included discussion on the action to take to have the damaged green repaired; re-locating/ upgrading the sound system and advertising and sponsorship ideas. We still need five more people to help out at the Bunning's sausage sizzle on Saturday 1 July 2017 between 11.30am-1.30pm. If you are interested please write your name up on the list on the notice board near the games room or see one of the bar staff. THANK YOU

LADIES BOWLING ARM - PRESIDENT S REPORT We are half way through the year and already our singles and pairs championships have been completed. The nominations for both these events have been outstanding, so thank you ladies. Congratulations to our pairs Champions The B Singles is under way as well as our Star competition. Consistency is coming up shortly so there is always plenty going on. The teams for the Caloundra Waters Shield, which is being played at Club Kawana, have been picked and we are confident of putting up a great effort in this annual event. In May we had a Ladies Forum, which we try and do at least twice a year. It was well attended and very informative. Thank you again to Stuart West who spoke on the finer points of measuring. We hope to get Stuart back to guide us through the correct procedures of Marking at our next Forum. Your lead can t draw, your second can t score, your third can t drive and you are 35-5 down. You ll be back (This little bit of wisdom thanks to Joan Nolan) Robyn Schey Winners of the final of the ladies pairs was Wendy Tonks and Jen Gordon. Congratulations to you both. 5

6 6 MBA PRESIDENT S REPORT Bob Johnstone View From the Umpire s Chair. 11 All members that played in Seaside sponsored day and attended the Centaur RSL Sub Branch day are to be congratulated on the attendance. Top turnout for both events and great to see bowlers on the greens enjoying themselves and the company of fellow members. WELL DONE to the members running the events and all club staff involved with promotions forthcoming in June and coming months. Keep up the top attendance and great work. In my appeal for more umpires in last month s Pelican Brief, I gave a scenario where a bowl can be marked as a toucher even though it has not touched the jack. This particular piece of bowls trivia came up about a year or so ago, and I was pleased when one of our umpires gave the correct answer when asked during a morning bowls break! If a player inadvertently plays the wrong bowl, the correct bowl is carried up the rink to replace it. If the incorrect bowl had been a toucher, then the correct one is also marked, even though it has not touched the jack! LAW 29.2 refers. Here is another piece of trivia for you. According to the Laws there are three occasions when an end can be tied: 1. The nearest bowl of each team is touching the jack The nearest bowl of each team is the same distance from the jack ?? This situation was mentioned at last month s Ladies Forum, but can those who were present remember the answer? Again it is an unlikely scenario, but perfectly possible. Those who know the answer, please apply to the office for an Umpire s Application Form! Stuart West or
