Wolverine News Written for the students, by the students October 31, 2013 First Edition Stand Up For Yourself Bullying is something that can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime. That person being bullied might be you. Gibbs is the youth crisis counselor and bullying expert. He is the president of the Kalman Research Institute for Bullying Prevention, and the national spokesman for Office Depot Foundation's "Be the Difference, Speak Up Against Bullying" program in partnership with the band One Direction. With more than a decade of working with youth, Gibbs has earned a reputation as a leading authority on youth issues surrounding bullying. Brooks Gibbs came to Zachry Middle School September 11, 2013, and spoke about how he was bullied in his elementary, middle school, and the beginning of his high school years. He has a golden rule, Treat others the way you want to be treated. He was bullied because he would let the bullies mess with him, and because bullies like to see you suffer. He said that when he was little he once brought hand cuffs to school, and hand cuffed one of his bullies. His teacher told him that you can t hand cuff your bullies. This is like showing weakness to the other bully, and that won t make your problem any better; it will only make it worse. If you re being bullied and you need help, you can stop that by treating the bully the way you would want to be treated, with kindness. Now, if you think you might be getting bullied, but you don t know for sure, then you may want to check out these examples: Somebody calling you names or someone is leaving you out of a group. Those are signs of bullying. If that doesn t work, then talk to a trusted adult about your problem. Gibbs also mentioned his website at www.brooksgibbs.com. There, you can look at his tour for when he is traveling, and get more information in general about bullying. You can also learn more about Brooks Gibbs life. Also, the background to his program Be the Difference Speak Up Against Bullying can be found at his website. You can find his contact information on there as well. So, don t forget the Golden Rule, Treat others the way you want to be treated. Page 2 Wolverine News Dear Ruby Red, S is a female athlete who thinks she s it. Normally, this wouldn t bother me, but she has been picking on me during lunch and in the morning on the bus. Please help me, I don t know what to do. - Sofia Dear Sofia, Don t worry about it! If she gets to lunch after you, try walking a little bit slower, so the seat next to her will be taken and S won t have a chance. If don t want to miss the munchies, then try reserving a seat for your friends. While on the bus, sit in the back or offer a seat to the first person you see. You could also try what we learned during the Brooks Gibbs assembly and treat S the way you want to be treated, kindly. If it continues to be a problem try talking to a teacher or other trusted adult. These words are fool proof. Just don t worry about it. -Ruby Red Chatter Interview with Mr. Driess Mr. Dreiss is our industrial technology teacher here at Zachry Middle School. He has taught for a total of 22 years, and has been at Zachry for 18 of those years. While interviewing Mr. Driess, I discovered many interesting facts that not many Zachry students may know. For one, did you know that Mr. Driess enjoys the movie Animal House and would love to visit Hawaii someday? When seen around school make sure you give him a high five because he loves to work with all of us, and enjoys teaching us helpful life skills. He may not be your teacher but he sure is a teacher that all of us would like to have! Ask Ruby Red Dear Ruby Red, Who do I tell whenever one of my friends is being bullied by another one of my friends? - Donna Dear Donna, If your friend is being mean to another friend, then she/he is not your friend. (Just a little note). Now on to the who part of it. You could also try the golden rule, treating others the way you want to be treated and be kind to her. If this still doesn t work, tell a trusted adult, or tell her/ him it s either the person they don t like, or no friendship with you at all. -Ruby Red By Savannah

Page 3 Reviews Monsters University Raww!! Are you ready for school? Mike and Sulley are, and they also have the school spirit. Monster University is the Disney Pixar classic hit movie from the summer of 2013, and is now out on video. You might be wondering who the voice of the main characters were; here are your answers: (Mike s voice) Billy Crystal, (Sullivan s voice) John Goodman, (Randy s voice) Steve Buscemi, (Dean Hardscrabble s voice) Helen Mirren, (Squishy s voice) Peter Sohn, (Don s voice) Joel Murray, (Terri s voice) Sean Hayes, (Terry s voice) Dave Foley, and (Art s voice) Charlie Day. Well, let s move onto the straight facts. The 1 hour and 47 minute movie is about Mike Wazoski. Ever since he was little, he wanted to go to Monster University. So, Mike does whatever it takes to reach his goal. Once, he makes it to the university, he makes new friends like Sullivan. Then the journey continues from there. By: Andrea
