THE RIVER WYE WITH WILL MILLARD Monday, January 8 BBC One Wales, 7.30pm #theriverwye The River Wye runs for nearly 140 miles from the wild mountains of mid Wales to the vast Severn Estuary, on the way creating one of the most beautiful valleys in the world. For writer and angler Will Millard, rivers are where he feels most at home - and in this three-part series he s exploring the whole length of the waterway named Britain s favourite river a few years ago. After finding the source, up in the wilds of Plynlimon in the Cambrian Mountains, Will meets local farmer Jon Bennett-Evans. Like a lot of sheep farmers, diversification has become the key for Jon to make a living, so he and his family also run a rally car testing centre. In its upper reaches the Wye looks pristine but the burning of fossil fuels in the past released a cocktail of chemicals into the high atmosphere, falling on Welsh hills as acid rain. For the Wye, though, a local group is working hard to right those wrongs. After spending a night in a remote shelter called a bothy, Will visits one of the Elan Valley s famous dams - a testament to the Victorian ambition and skill of those who built them. In a secret location Will finds out more about a river-dwelling animal that hasn t been seen in Wales for centuries, while just south of Builth Wells, he hopes to fulfil a lifelong dream by catching a Wye salmon. THE MINERS WHO MADE US Thursday, January 11 BBC One Wales, 8pm #MinersWhoMadeUs In a special celebration of the proud history of coal mining in Wales, Lucy Owen and Will Millard explore above and below ground at the Big Pit museum in Blaenavon. A quarter of a million miners once worked in more than 3,000 Welsh collieries, risking their lives to power our homes, our industry and feed their families. Now, 10 years on from the closure of the last deep mine in Wales, the miners of that pit - Tower Colliery - are reunited for a programme paying tribute to those who worked underground and their contribution to our nation. There s a fresh look at the legacy left behind by the coal industry - from the impact on the landscape, the slag heaps and abandoned railway tunnels, to the crumbling miners institutes, built with miners wages, which communities are now fighting to preserve. Welsh-Egyptian comedian Omar Hamdi is challenged to perform a gig at Fleur de Lys Institute in front of an audience of former coal miners. Who better to help him prepare than former pit electrician and entertainer, Max Boyce? Rugby legend and former Wales captain Sir Gareth Edwards explores the strong links between mining and international rugby. Also, in an emotional interview, he hears surprising revelations about his own family s mining roots in Carmarthenshire and the Upper Swansea Valley, dating back more than two centuries. Former MP for Swansea East, Sian James, who is also married to a former miner, goes on a journey to meet some of the women whose lives were transformed by the 1984 strike. There are also poignant reunions and inspiring stories of heroic rescues, as well as music from James Dean Bradfield, Public Service Broadcasting and a stirring performance from the Beaufort Male Choir.
