SPECIAL SAILING INSTRUCTIONS To be read in conjunction with the 2018 MYCQ Sailing Instructions, Revision H. RACE: The Great Bay Race TYPE: Summer 5 DISTANCE: Approximately 65 NM DATE: Sat 3rd November 2018 TIME LIMIT: None START TIME: 1000 hours OFFICER OF THE DAY (OOD): TBA 1. INTENTION TO RACE Please advise the Sailing and Safety Committee Chairman, Bruce Dickson by phone or text on 0413 602 214 of your intension to race by 2100 hours on the Wednesday prior to the race (i.e. 31 October 2018). As per the MYCQ Race Fee Schedule published on the website, to accumulate points for the Club Championship, season racing fees must be paid and the skipper must be a financial member of MYCQ. Crew should preferably also be financial members of the MYCQ but can be members of other clubs, provided they have an Australian Sailing number and hence are covered by the AS insurances. Note: if potential crew members are not a member of a club, a very economical way of obtaining an Australian Sailing Number is to join the MYCQ. 2. SAFETY REGULATIONS Australian Sailing 2017-2020 Special Regulations, Part 1, Category 5N and as per the 2018 MYCQ Sailing Instructions. All persons competing in this event do so at their own risk and in entering, acknowledge that they indemnify the MYCQ, its office bearers and volunteers against any claim whatsoever. The decision to race, or continue racing, is entirely the responsibility of the skipper and crew. Refer to the MYCQ General Sailing Instructions and specifically to the MSQ requirements as follows. All skippers of any vessel participating in a race, must maintain on board and produce upon demand by the Race Committee, a copy of a current valid Certificate Revision E Page 1

of Currency with respect to the third-party property and third-party personal injury insurance for the vessel. All marine incidents must be reported to the Race Committee in addition to regulatory requirements to report marine incidents to Maritime Safety Queensland. All vessels shall keep a 20m exclusion zone around Jay s Reef Buoy, Hope Banks Beacon, Norman J Wright Beacon, Crawford James Pattison Beacon, Red Beacon NE Green Island and the South Cardinal Beacon St Helena Island. 3. SHIPPING MOVEMENTS Competitors should refer to QShips on the MSQ website and go to the sub-heading Ship Movements where all shipping for the day is listed. The OOD may also phone 3305 1700 and request Confirmed Shipping Movements for the day and provide this information to competitors. However, it is the ultimate responsibility for each skipper/owner to ensure they are informed about shipping and monitor the radio when they approach the Port of Brisbane shipping channel. 4. RADIO MONITORING All race participants shall monitor VHF Ch12 when approaching the Shipping Channel and will communicate with large traffic if necessary. No yacht shall pass in front of an approaching vessel when ordered to keep clear or if there is any likelihood of endangering the free and unencumbered movement of ships. 5. PORT CONTROL ADVICE After the start, the OOD at an appropriate time, will advise Brisbane Harbour Control on VHF 12 of the number of yachts competing and the approximate time the fleet will arrive at and leave the shipping channel. 6. RADIO SCHEDULE Use VHF 72 for all communications, other than those relating to the Port of Brisbane as above. At 0945 hours, contact the MYCQ start boat to register, confirming the name of the yacht, sail number and number of people on board. (Note: If sailing under OMR, advise the Chair of the Sailing Committee prior to the start of any significant changes to the weight of the crew by email at bcdickson@optusnet.com.au.) At 1200 hours, advise the OOD of your position and then every 3 hours until finished. Revision E Page 2

If no contact, try again 10 minutes later, on VHF 81. Positions should be given as latitude and longitude to the nearest minute. 7. START PROCEDURE As per the 2018 MYCQ Sailing Instructions. 8. START LINE The start line will be between the Start Boat and the Wood Channel No.1 FL Green 4s in Waterloo Bay (approximate 27 27.49 S 153 13.31 E - entrance to Aquatic Paradise). If there is no start boat on station, the start will within 200m and to the west of the No.1 Green entrance marker to Aquatic Paradise, on an extension of the transit between the Red and Green markers. 9. COURSE This race consists of three parts A,B & C. Part A part involves rounding Peel Island in either direction and then completing B and C triangles in any order and any direction. Any bearings are intended as a guide only and should not be used for navigation purposes. All navigation marks shall be observed and passed on the correct side, including the eastern red lateral buoy off St Helena Island. Part A From the start, leave Green Island to port and King Island and Huybers Beacon to starboard. Then round Peel Island to port or starboard. If leaving Peel Island to port: -leave the Special Purpose yellow buoy (at 27 30.32 S, 153 22.52 E) to starboard (as the sand bank has moved over time, we suggest leaving extra room at this mark); -leave Douglas Light to starboard; and -Hanlon Light to port. If leaving Peel Island to starboard: -leave Hanlon Light to starboard; Revision E Page 3

-Douglas Light to port; and -the Special Purpose yellow buoy (at 27 30.32 S, 153 22.52 E) to port (as the sand bank has moved over time, we suggest leaving extra room at this mark). Hope Banks is not a mark of the course but is an isolated danger mark. Green Island, St Helena Island and Mud Island are not marks of the course but the associated navigation marks shall be observed and passed on the correct side, including the eastern red off St Helena that must be taken to port. After rounding Peel Island proceed to the northern part of Moreton Bay by crossing the shipping channel with channel markers 8 & 7 (the Coffee Pots ) to port and channel markers 6 & 5 to starboard. Both parts (or triangles) B and C, begin at Brisbane Roads Buoy, approximately 27 17.046 S, 153 11.715 E and may be sailed in any order and any direction. Part (or triangle) B This triangle is bounded by North Reef Beacon (FI G (4)), approximately 27 11.00 S, 153 7.96, Otter Rock Buoy (FI R 2.5S), approximately 27 16.57 S, 153 6.80 E and Brisbane Roads Buoy. If you start triangle B before triangle C, leave Brisbane Roads Buoy to port and finish the triangle by leaving it to port. In each case Brisbane Roads shall be passed with 50 metres of it. All other marks shall be passed on the outside of the triangle. Part (or triangle) C This triangle is bounded by MB2 (FI R 3S), approximately 27 12.06 S, 153 18.78 E, Pearl Channel Buoy (FI R 2.5S), approximately 27 11.53 S, 153 13.05 E, and Brisbane Roads Buoy. If you start this triangle before triangle B, leave Brisbane Roads Buoy to starboard and to starboard when you complete triangle C. All other marks shall be passed on the outside of the triangle. The course involves the completion of all three triangles. 10. THE FINISH Revision E Page 4

The finish will be after completing Parts A, B and C, with Brisbane Roads Buoy bearing either 0 or 180 magnetic and within 100m of your boat. Brisbane Roads shall be taken on port or starboard as required to complete the respective triangle that you finish on. 12. FINISH TIMES Competitors shall record their own finish time and transmit it to the OOD by radio on VHF 72 as soon as possible after finishing and confirm by email to the Chairperson of the Sailing and Safety Committee by email at bcdickson@optusnet.com.au. By submitting a time, you are declaring that you have completed the race in accordance with these Special Instructions and the 2018 Sailing Instructions. Yachts that do not finish shall report to the OOD or if unable to do so, other competing yacht and if damaged in any way, report when safely in harbour. Revision E Page 5
