Club Events 9 Obituary of Walt Gorgas On Monday, December 12 Walt Gorgas collapsed, coming down a run at Killington, where he had been an instructor for many years... and did not get up again. A member of the Hudson Valley Ski Club since the eighties, and twice its president (1999-2001), Walt was known for his enthusiasm and interest in everything. This fall, at what may have been his last attendance at a HVSC meeting, he gave a rousing presentation on mountain biking, having brought along his own two bikes. On a Colorado ski trip he gave Frank Van Zanten an unsolicited one hour lesson on how to do a mogul field. The fact that Frank was a snowboarder and Walt was a skier did not seem incongruous to him. While thinking about how to present the sad news of Walt s passing to his Hudson Valley Ski Club friends, Bill Rosenberg found a beautifully written tribute, composed by Bob Zazzera, both a Killington Ambassador and a Killington instructor as well as somebody with whom Walt engaged in ski racing. I thank Bob for allowing us to use his tribute for concluding this report.... Our good friend Walter Gorgas left us suddenly... with his ski boots on. Walter raced for the Ski Bums on our Ambassador Team during the 2013/2014 season. I spoke with him on Friday, because he was going to race for us again this year. He just had to juggle his Ski Instructing duties to get time off on Wednesdays. He was a very special and loving man, who I was proud and honored to call my dear friend. He was the most bowlegged skier I ever knew. I used to call him my little leprechaun (because he used to wear a green felt hat). He transfixed us with his colorful ski style and his acrobatics on snow. But put him on a dance floor and he would transform it into a magical showcase. Put him in front of a group of children and he would mesmerize them for hours (adults also, for that matter). He had an indescribable presence and all who knew him were transformed by the experience. Walter transported everyone to a higher & happier place just by his presence. His charm impacted so many... he will truly be missed. It is hard to believe he was 80 years of age. He had more energy than many half his age. RIP, our friend! Frank Van Zanten Discounts for HVSC Members! We realize Ski Clubs are Ambassadors for our passions... Skiing, Snowboarding, Cycling, Kayaking, Stand Up Paddleboarding and Outdoor Living. In Appreciation, please enjoy the following Special HVSC Discounts: 20% Off All Non Sale Equipment and Clothing Purchases 15% on All Non Sale Accessory Purchases 10% Off All Seasonal Rentals and Service An Additional 5% Off 2016-2017 Sale Items (Thru Feb. 15, 2017)

10 HVSC 2016 Holiday Party Friday the 16th, 20 members and friends got together to celebrate the Holidays at the Grandview Catering Hall. We had a great cocktail hour and a delicious diner. Everyone enjoyed the company and we knocked ourselves out dancing the night away. Former club president Mark Booska joined us at the table and added to the fun. The Grandview proved once again to be a terrific venue for celebrating. Several members said they were looking to doing it again next year. All enjoyed the evening and wished more members would join us next December.
