Coaching Guidelines for U10 Players Aim: To allow players of all ages and abilities, to develop to their full potential, in an ENJOYABLE, CHALLENGING and POSITIVE environment. Objectives: 1.) Create a clear and simple pathway for player development. 2.) Always keep the player at the center of the development process. Allow players as much active time with a ball each, as possible. 3.) Teach the principles of the game. 4.) Teach roles not positions. 5.) Create a deep and underlying passion for the sport of soccer at all ages. 6.) Acknowledge that players will learn and develop at different speeds. 7.) To keep a fresh and current outlook on the changes in young player development. To be successful at this age group the coach needs to have these traits: Flexibility Children all progress at different rates so be aware of players understanding of instructions. Recognize when something is not working and change it. A sense of humor laugh with your players and make it FUN they will enjoy the experience more and want to come back next time. A very positive attitude Give generous praise often; remember they are still learning the game. Positive reinforcement will keep their confidence high and again, make them want to return. And lots and lots of energy If you re energetic and dynamic in your coaching style the kids will feed off this and remain more focused in the session. The NSC approach to player development is based on a consistent and positive approach to getting young players to reach their full potential. There are 4 areas that will be addressed in this document: 1. The NSC Philosophy 2. The NSC Methodology 3. The NSC Structure for the age group 4. The NSC Curriculum U10 program specific

The NSC Philosophy: Mission Statement: The purpose of the Natick Soccer Club is to promote and enhance the game of soccer for the youth of the Town of Natick. The club offers a variety of programs including Kinderkicks, intramural and town travel programs. These programs provide opportunities for participants to develop sportsmanship, learn about soccer and team play, and create a foundation for a lifelong enjoyment of athletics The NSC Methodology: Our approach to player development is simple and based on 3 key elements: Enjoyable It is a proven educational fact that young players in any sport, or for that matter in the classroom, will be more likely to excel and reach their full potential if they are enjoying their subject matter. Making soccer fun and age appropriate is a key concept in any successful player development model. Challenging For a young player to develop to their maximum potential they must be in an environment that is differentiated based on their ability. There needs to be a carefully laid out plan that is progressive and allows a young player to face new challenges at each stage. Young players learn at different rates and also in different ways and there has to be an opportunity for all players to be allowed to succeed in their own time. Positive It is vital that a young player receives the necessary support structure throughout their development. There must be clarity in the expectations at each stage in the process and there cannot be unnecessary pressure applied at too young an age or players will be lost to the sport. Players should be encouraged to learn from their mistakes and not feel as if they will be berated for trying to express themselves. 3. The NSC Structure: Getting Started Phase FUNdemental Phase Training to Train Phase Training to Compete Phase K-2 nd Grade 3 rd -6 th Grade U10 7 th -9 th Grade 10-12 th Grade

COACHING GUIDELINES B) FUNdemental Phase, 3 rd 6 th Grade Technical Physical Tactical Psychological There are four main pillars of soccer, which are evident at every level of the game TECHNICAL, PHYSICAL, TACTICAL and PSYCHOLOGICAL. There will be different emphasis placed on each pillar of the game, depending on the age and ability of the player. It is important that a coach has clear goals for themselves and for their team prior to working with any age group. Technical: At this age we should be looking to get players using both feet as much as possible. We want to continue the process of getting them to be comfortable with the ball on either foot. We would like to see players be able to change pace, direction and become more able to try 1v1 moves and turns. Physical: Players at this age find it fun to be active. Keep them moving with a ball as much as possible. At this stage of their development players still remain fairly egocentric but can make some decisions on the field. It is worth noting that players are developing physically at different rates now so expect some lack of co-ordination in some activities. Any fitness that they receive should be as a result of playing the game of soccer. Use soccer games to improve balance and co-ordination. Any other fitness work such as laps and static stretches is not appropriate for this age group. Tactical: There should be no emphasis on playing set positions. In games, players should play in a 6v6 format to encourage more touches on the ball and begin some understanding of the tactical game. Whilst a Goalkeeper isn t recommended, the use of a Sweeper/Goalkeeper is permitted to stop a ball but the ball must be released immediately after it is stopped. There should be some introduction to certain rules of the game but not over emphasized. Psychological: The main psychological goal for players at this stage of their development is to have FUN. Coaches need to maintain an exciting and positive introduction to the game of soccer to ensure future participation together with some challenging goals so as to stretch the players. There should be absolutely no emphasis placed on winning games.

Recommended Breakdown for a Typical U10 Session A typical session for this age group should be 60-80 minutes 1.) WARM-UP 15 minutes Begin with a FUN activity. This should prepare the players mentally and physically for the rest of the practice. 2.) 2 x SKILL GAMES - Unopposed AND Opposed 15-20 minutes each These games are designed to be high energy, fun activities that reinforce the basic techniques without pressure. 3.) SMALL-SIDED GAMES Opposed 4v4 to 6v6 30 minutes Each practice should conclude with a small-sided game. The size of the field should be about 40x30 yards and the teams should be 4v4 with a Sweeper/Goalkeeper. 4.) COOL DOWN 5 minutes Spend five minutes at the end of each session making sure that all of your players enjoyed themselves. Do a fun cool down, reinforce basic technical points. Playing the 4v4 to 6v6 Game Every practice should conclude with a small-sided game. Remember that the game is the best teacher of all. Your main aim is to create an ENJOYABLE, CHALLENGING, POSITIVE and SAFE environment in which your players can develop. This should be the largest portion of your practice about thirty minutes in length. Organization 1.) Field Size: 40x30 yards (4v4) to 60x40 yards (6v6) 2.) Equipment: Use cones to clearly mark out the area of the field. 3.) Use upright cones or flags as goals and place them about 6 feet apart. 4.) Use pinneys to avoid confusion amongst players. 5.) Play with a SIZE 4 ball. 6.) Be flexible with your playing time your main aim is that all players have a positive experience. You can vary the playing periods and make sure to allow time for substitutions and water breaks. 7.) Use the parents have the parents stand around the perimeter of the field and stop the ball and players from disappearing into the wilderness; however, one side of the field should be for coaches only. 8.) Teams have a goalkeeper with 6v6. In the 4v4 format however, try to create the notion of a keeper sweeper to prevent the goalkeeper from remaining static on the line all the time. Every player should have the opportunity to be goalkeeper. Use this time to briefly explain the role of the goalkeeper in the game. 4v4 will promote players getting more touches on the ball more and being involved as much as possible, as well as create 1v1 situations. 6v6 will introduce some of the tactical elements of the game but should still allow for 1v1 opportunities. Keep instructions clear and to a minimum and use your enthusiasm to keep all players motivated. Get the teams to give themselves fun names to generate excitement without putting any emphasis on winning. Always stress the importance of fair play and sportsmanship and have the players shake hands/high five at the end of each game. By the end of your session make sure that all your players have achieved some measure of success.

4v4 game layout 4v4 game in 40x30 area, with a GK/Sweeper. Only one player should be allowed to use their hands BUT encourage them to play in a more forward role as a sweeper. Have a supply of balls at the side to keep the game flowing and to try and limit stoppages 6v6 game layout 6v6 game in 60x40 area, with a Goalkeeper. Have a supply of balls at the side to keep the game flowing and to try and limit stoppages. A 2-1-2 format should still encourage 1v1 situations.

Beating an Opponent Turns and 1v1 Moves At this age individual 1v1 moves and turns will prove very challenging but this doesn t mean they shouldn t try. Focus on a couple of moves/turns and help them become successful at these by using the following: Concept Repetition Slow start Low center of Gravity Over-emphasize Be confident Explanation Players will not always be successful Allow players to be successful before progressing Vital to allowing quick changes of direction with acceleration Get players to exaggerate their movements and use their body in 1v1 situations Praise every attempt We expect players to be able to perform a number of turns and moves by the end of the 8 week program. Below are a list of nine 1v1 moves and six turns that we would want all players to be confident of performing, or at least trying, by the end of the program. Drag Back Stop Turn Inside Hook/Cut Outside Hook/Cut Cruyff Turn Step Over With ball under control, place sole of foot on top of ball and quickly drag ball across the front of body. Push the ball away with outside of same foot and accelerate into space. With ball under control, player feints to pass or shoot to get defender off balance. Place sole of foot on top of ball to stop it dead. Quickly place same foot on other side of ball between defender and yourself in a hopping motion. With knees bent, bring other foot quickly over the ball and push the ball away with outside of opposite foot and accelerate into space. With ball under control, reach with inside of foot and hook ball back 180 degrees behind body. Knees should be bent and ball should be pushed into space. Quickly take ball away in opposite direction with outside of opposite foot and accelerate into space. With ball under control, reach with outside of foot and hook ball 180 degrees behind body. It is important that young players get their foot fully wrapped around the outside of the ball and actually hook it back in front of them. Quickly take ball away with outside of the same foot and accelerate into space With ball under control, player feints to pass or shoot to get defender off balance. Bring leg around outside of ball so instep makes contact with ball. Push ball back and underneath body. With knees bent push ball away with outside of opposite foot and accelerate into space. With ball under control, player feints to pass or shoot to get defender off balance. Bring the passing foot quickly over the top of the ball without touching it. Plant foot past ball with toe pointing away from defender. With bent knees, quickly turn body 180 degrees and take ball away with outside of same foot or inside of opposite foot and accelerate into space. Matthews or Fake Push & Go Scissors Use full body and lunge to one side to get defender off balance. Push the ball away and past the defender using the outside of the opposite foot. Accelerate into space and place body quickly between defender and the ball. A simple, slow approach towards the defender, push the ball past the opponent and accelerate to catch up to the ball. Ensure that the player gets their body in-between the ball and the opponent as they accelerate away. Slow approach to the opponent, bring the front foot around the front of the ball, to protect it from the defender. As the weight shifts to the front foot push the ball away and past the defender using the outside of the opposite foot. Accelerate into space and place body quickly between defender and the ball.

Double Scissors Stop and Go Pull Back Inside Out Maradona Nutmeg Body forward. Repeat movement above a second time to throw defender off balance. Movement should be fluid and quick. Used when defender is even with attacker. Break momentum of dribble by stopping the ball with the sole of foot and then quickly push forward with toe or laces of opposite foot (can also use same foot). Hesitation will get defender off balance and allow attacker to accelerate away. To be used when defender is even with attacker. Feint initially to get defender off balance. Use sole of foot to pull ball back and then push behind standing leg and accelerate away. You can also look at the Ronaldo variation where he simply chops the ball behind the standing leg and accelerates away. Dribble at defender with ball close and under control. Touch the ball inside towards the defender with the inside of the foot and then very quickly take the ball away in the opposite direction and past the defender with the outside of the same foot. Accelerate past defender into space. This can also be reversed for an outside-in move. Place sole of foot on top of ball and spin quickly away using the sole of the other foot. Useful in getting out of tight spaces. To be used when a defender has become square to the play and is off balance. Quickly play the ball between the defenders legs and run around the defender to the other side and accelerate into space.

U10 Week One: Dribbling and 1v1 Warm Up: 9 Lives 10 Minutes SET UP 30x20 Yard Area All players have a ball in a 20x20 area, and start with 9 Lives Players lose two lives if dribbling too slowly, collide with someone else or go outside of the area. They must attempt to perform a turn or move every five touches. Deduct a point if when you freeze the game, the players can touch each other. Reward players by giving them lives if they work hard, do a move well, or in the biggest space when stopped. Introduce the INSIDE/ OUTSIDE TURN and the MATTHEWS/FAKE. Add in one defender who tries to tag (foot on top of the ball) the balls. 3 lives are lost when your ball is tagged. Use both feet. Head up while dribbling. Keeps the ball close using small, soft touches and dribble into spaces. Activity 1: Tail Tag SET UP: 30x20 Yard Area Every player has a pinnie and uses it as a tail. On command the game begins and each player tries to steal another player s tail while still dribbling and controlling their ball. Player at the end of each game with the most tails is the winner. Players must find space to control the ball in head up! Players change direction while dribbling but must keep control of their ball. Activity 2: 1 v 1 SET UP: 15x10 Yard Area Players score by dribbling past their opponent and stopping the ball on their opponent s end line. The defender passes the ball to the attacker to start Play a championship. Players play each other for 1 minute. 1 point every time they reach opponent s end line with ball under control. Winning player moves up, losing player moves down so they play different players each time. Slow in, Fast out. Use of move to beat player. Perform move about yard away or the moves are pointless. Small Sided Game: 6v6 SET UP: 60x40 Field Use a Keeper. Have a supply of balls at the side to keep the game flowing. Limit stoppages. RULES; Goal Kick s (A pass on the ground to the wide areas) throw in s (A quick throw to feet) corners permitted but no punting from the GK s. Reinforce coaching points from the session. COOL DOWN: Have a question and answer session with the players about the day s session

U10 Week Two: Dribbling Warm Up: Skills Box 10 Minutes SET UP: 30x30 Yard Area All players start with a ball inside the skills box, perform a skill and dribble out to any set of gates and return to the skills box. Then repeat. Use weaker foot only or one surface (e.g. instep/outstep) etc. Add defenders who aim to win the ball to swap if they challenge successfully. Go through more than one gate. Players must perform a skill (trick / feint or turn etc) shown by coach before leaving the Skills Box. Can they invent their own trick? Use of surfaces, Head up see the space and danger. Change of Speed and Direction. Use of skill or turn Activity 1: 1v1 SET UP: 15x10 Yard Area Players into groups of 4 or 6. Set up areas of approximately 10x15. Red players attack first against the yellow s. If a red player gets across the yellow players line they score a point. The yellow defender can score by dispossessing the red player and crossing their end line. Play for 2 minutes then switch roles. Get teams to remember their scores to make it more competitive. Look to see if the attackers can use the 1v1 moves from the warm-up. 1. Allow the attacking player to start with the ball at their feet 2. Have them start with the ball in their hands so that they have to get control of the ball from the air. Activity 2: 1v1 to GK SET UP: 15x20 Yard Area Set up areaa as shown. Have a GK in each goal. Use the same progression as the 1v1 line soccer but now have the players look to shoot on goal if they beat the defender. As above plus - Have the defenders pass the ball to the attackers and then close them down. Play for 2 minutes and switch roles. Switch teams to make it more challenging too. Players should also rotate so they get to face different 1v1 challenges with different players. Attacker should be positive with 1 st touch. If defender is slow to defend, attacker should be prepared to shoot early. If defender closes space down quickly, attacker should look to create space with 1v1 move and then look to shoot as quickly as possible. Attacker should be alert to finish all rebounds.

U10 Week Three: Dribbling 1v1 Warm Up: Triangle Chase 10 Minutes SET UP: 3 Yard Triangle Players take it in turns to chase each other around the triangle with their ball. A point is gained if you tag your partner Use both feet, make triangle smaller. Head up to see danger. Use turns to change direction. Get down low on the turns and push the ball with the laces. Activity 1: 1v1 to Cone SET UP: 10 Yard Area Player with ball must try to get to one of the three cones in front to score a point. The other player is the defender and cannot move until the attacking player touches the ball. Use weaker foot. Introduce skills. E.g. Feints and step over Attackers approach, slow in fast out. Change of Speed and Direction. Use of surfaces. Keep ball close Activity 2: Dribbling Gauntlet SET UP: 30x25 with 4 zones. 1 defender in each zone. One Player must dribble through each box until 1 on 1 with GK and they take a shot. The defenders have to stay in their own box. If a defender leaves their box, all the defenders freeze for 3 seconds. If a defender wins the ball they attacker must go back in line. If defenders are on top, have them become passive so the attacker get more success. Use weaker foot to dribble/shoot or both. Set each player a 15 second time limit to get 1v1 with the GK. Stand defenders up. Keep ball close, use different surfaces. Change of speed and direction. Get shot on target. Try to go for the corners Small Sided Game: 6v6 SET UP: 60x40 Field Use a Keeper. Have a supply of balls at the side to keep the game flowing. Limit stoppages. RULES; Goal Kick s (A pass on the ground to the wide areas) throw in s (A quick throw to feet) corners permitted but no punting. Reinforce coaching points from the session. COOL DOWN: Have a question and answer session with the players about the day s session

U10 Week Four: Turning Warm Up: Skills Circle. 10 Minutes SET UP: 30 Yard Circle Set up a circle (Maximize the space you have available). All players have a ball each and are inside the area dribbling their balls. Coach revises and demonstratess selected turns: INSIDE/OUTSIDE TURN; DRAG BACK; STOP TURN. Introduce new turns: CRUYFF & STEP OVER. Use both feet. Use different surfaces. Keep the ball close and under control at all times. Be aware of space look around all the time. INSIDE TURN. OUTSIDE TURN. DRAG BACK. STOP TURN, CRUYFF, STEP OVER. Activity 1: Turning SET UP: 20x20 yard area. In four groups, the first player in each group is to dribble to the nearest cone, perform a move or turn and then accelerate to the next group, everyone goes the same direction. For instance; move no.1 a scissor with the left foot and move towards the right. Show them moves: scissors, step-over, drop the shoulder, and feint. Both feet, all moves & turns. Start slowly and give yourself space to perform the move: Timing. Good technique whilst using the move (Get low and push off). Use the outside of the foot after the move to go diagonal forward. Accelerate after move: In slow and fast out. Activity 2: 1v1 With 2 GK s w/ attackers back Small Sided Game: 6v6 SET UP: 20x15 Yard Area Set up area as shown above, approx 15x20. If numbers are small just set up one field. Rotate the GK s every few minutes. GK rolls the ball to the yellow attacker who tries to turn and shoot. Switch roles after 3 minutes. GK bounces a pass at them to control before attacking. GK throws ball in air underarm at player to control before attacking. Check to the ball to create space. Look over shoulder if defender is not close turn and attack. If defender is tight, look to turn into space and shoot quickly. Use body to shield ball from defender. Gain space for a shot. Follow up rebounds SET UP: 60x40 Field Use a Keeper. Have a supply of balls at the side to keep the game flowing. Limit stoppages. RULES; Goal Kick s (A pass on the ground to the wide areas) throw in s (A quick throw to feet) corners permitted but no punting. Reinforce to goal coaching points from the session. COOL DOWN: Have a question and answer session with the players about the day s session

U10 Week Five: Defending Warm Up: Defending Gates 10 Minutes SET UP: 20x20 yard Area In two teams, one with, one without balls, dribble and move around the area. On Coaches word, players with the ball must try and dribble through as many gates as possible. Players without must block the gates. Play for 45secs 1 minute. Rotate players every 2 minutes between exercises. Defender attempts to win ball, roles reverse for challenge time period. Pressure the ball quickly, Bend run toward player make play predicable Activity 1: Defending Technique SET UP: 10x20 Yard Area Working in pairs, one player dribbles the ball forward while the other player adopts a good defensive position behind the ball and goes back to the line sideways or slightly side on. The defender doesn t attempt to win the ball and the attacker doesn t try to dribble past them. This is to ensure that players are comfortable moving a distance backwards and they re patient in a 1v1 situation i.e. waiting for the attacker to over run the ball. Start with weak foot dribbling. Defenders stay low, on their toes, balanced and adopt a surfer/skate board position. Activity 2: Defending 1v1: Front Pressure SET UP: 10x20 Yard Area Server passes to the opposite attacker. Defender makes their move on the servers pass. Attacker must keep the ball under control and dribble the ball across the defenders line to score a point. Defender must win the ball or force the attacker out of bounds to the sides to a win a point. When they do win the ball they can dribble over the attacker s line. Speed of approach (first 10 yards quick), Slow down get side on (surfer position). Be patient, wait for the attacker to show the defender too much of the ball (persistence). First option is a poke tackle or a timed challenge. COACHES TIPS: Defenders are to dribble over the attackers start line when they win possession and not to smash the ball out of play. Small Sided Game: 6v6 SET UP: 60x40 Field Use a Keeper. Have a supply of balls at the side to keep the game flowing. Limit stoppages. RULES; Goal Kick s (A pass on the ground to the wide areas) throw in s (A quick throw to feet) corners permitted but no punting. Reinforce coaching points from the session. COOL DOWN: Have a question and answer session with the players about the day s session

U10 Week Six: Passing Warm Up: Passes 10 Minutes SET UP: 20x20 Yard Area Participants are numbered 1 through 6 and the players have to pass in number order.ie. 1 passes to 2, 2 passes to 3 and so on. Everybody must be moving around the grid and not standing still. Perform a skill/turn before passing. Reverse order so 6 passes to 5 and so on Use feint then ask for the pass. Once a player passes they must go touch a cone and come back into the grid giving the impression they are moving into space. Limit the touches Head Up. Communication. Accurate pass with instep. Movement into space, and quickly Activity 1: Passing Zig Zag SET UP: 8 Yard Zig Zags Set up a zigzag of cones 10 yards apart 7 times. One player on each cone and a line of players on the first cone. The player first in line passes the ball diagonally and follows their pass. The receiving player controls and passes diagonally and follows and so on until the end where the last player dribbles to the line. Check shoulder before receiving. Put a goal at the end that the last person shoots on. Accurate and well-weighted pass. Control the ball out of feed. Don t pass until the next player is ready Activity 1: 5v1 SET UP: 20X20 Players must attempt to keep the ball away from the one defender as long as possible. Attempt to get 5 passes to score a point. Lower target depending on ability. Also set two groups up and the team that reaches 5 consecutive passes the quickest wins. The defender must come from the opposite group. PROGESSIONS: Left foot only, 2 touch. Players on their toes, good communication, width & depth i.e. make the square as big as possible.
