SEPTEMBER 2018 CHAPTER #257 EDITION 2018-09 Sponsored by Mitchell s Harley-Davidson Owners: Art & Linda Mitchell / www.mitchellsmodestohd.com By Joe Rosa, Director September promises to be a great month with something going on every weekend starting with Demo Days at Mitchells. We had a few great rides in August including our Poker Run that ended up at Jim and Donna Artrip s ranch for some great tacos and a refreshing drink. Thank you so much Jim and Donna for opening up your home to the chapter. Our Santa Cruz ride was awesome, and the apple pie at the end was a perfect end to a great day of riding the Santa Cruz Mountains. Thank you Craig Wirtz and Brian Nevitt for planning such a great day. Our bike raffle is going very well. Thank you to all the members who have sold and are still working on selling tickets. Don t forget Demo Days at Mitchells on September 8 th. Come on out and ride some new models. We will also be set up to sell raffle tickets and could use some volunteers to help at the shop. September has a ride every weekend and the last dinner ride on the 26th. Let s take advantage of the cooler weather and get out there and have some fun! Our Halloween Party is on October 26th so start planning those costumes! SANTA CRUZ - AUG. 19, 2018

POKER RUN/POOL PARTY AUG. 11, 2018 Jim Artrip wins Low hand! Annette Kirk wins High hand!

SAFETY ON THE ROAD by Tim Teaters, Safety Officer A Golden Rule That Will Keep You Alive on City Streets Of all the things that we learn being out on the streets with our bikes, one stands out as the all-time life-saver in my book. If you can avoid it, never enter an intersection without another vehicle on your right side. If you have to slow down in order to let a vehicle catch up with you on the right side, or if you have to increase speed a little so that you catch up with another vehicle, having one on your right side is as safe as it gets for entering an intersection. Obviously, this also means that if you are stopped at a traffic light and it turns green, you enter the intersection when the vehicle on your right does - no jack rabbit jumps if you want to live. Too tame? Could be, but this rider likes it that way. In fact, I'd rather that the vehicle on my right was a bus or even an 18-wheeler. By the way, it is safer that the vehicle be on your right than on the left. The closer you can be to the center of the intersection when you go thru it, the more air there is (on average) between you and somebody that comes at you from either side. This is just another way of saying that if you have to enter the intersection by yourself, do it in the left-most lane. On another topic, it is that time of the year again. The tomato trucks are out in force. As we are all aware, the juices from the tomatoes being hauled by these trucks tend to flow right on to our streets and freeways. This is quite hazardous for us and our motorcycles as the surfaces become very slippery. So, if you see areas on the road that appear to be darker and shiny there is a good chance you are going to be riding on slippery pavement. Use caution when maneuvering through those areas. KEEP THE SHINY SIDE UP! SEE YOU ON THE ROAD!

John Bilyeu (center) nominated Jim Artrip (left) and Joe Rosa for not being very smart when it comes to water coolers. When setting up the water cooler at the fair for our HOG booth they insisted that the cooler was broken because it wasn't putting out any air. What they didn't realize was that they were checking the air from behind the Cooler! They both need a lesson on air flow technology! Kristina Lynn Dickson (no photo) Bret Smith (no photo)

Hello everyone! I hope you have had a wonderful August! There were a lot of good rides last month although, we also had to cancel rides due to the crazy wild fires in the hills. I even hear some of you lucky HOGS made it to Sturgis. Our Poker Run to Artrip Acres was a Blast. A big thanks to Joe and Jim for leading this ride. I would also like to thank Donna and Jim Artrip for giving us a wonderful place to end our Ride. Good food, Big pool and HOG Friends! The Dinner ride to Rivets American Grill was a good turnout. Thanks to Wayne and Craig for a wonderful evening. Rivets had great service, great food and even had a live band playing music. Santa Cruz here we come with 22 bikes and 30 HOGS.
