1 August 2017 River Roads Chapter Harley Owners Group Celebrating 29 Years of Serving Tri-State Harley-Davidson Owners Hello, From the Director s Saddle INSIDE THIS ISSUE Meeting Minutes Calendar of Events Membership Update The Safety Corner The Money Report Assistant Director River Roads HOG 3826 Chapter Meetings are the First Wednesday of each month, 7:00pm At Great River Road HD RRC Membership Dues can be mailed to: Deb O Dear Membership Officer 2436 N 12th Quincy, IL or paid in person at the next Meeting. A Membership Enrollment & Release Form is available on our Website and at Great River Harley Davidson. Remember to include your National HOG membership number with the Local Membership Enrollment and Release Form. Dues: $15 Single / $25 Couple Admitting you have a problem is the first step, or so the saying goes. We all have a little problem - we love to be seen. We like people to see our bike and we love to hear the praise people give us for how awesome our bike looks or sounds. We like to share ideas for modifications but like to keep our secrets so no one else has a bike like ours. We love originality, but in truth we are all the same. Being the same in the sense of our love for riding is ok, in fact amazing. We all get it. We know that anyone else on a Harley Davidson appreciates our need, our desire for appreciation and praise, and our love of riding. Whether a short or long distance rider, the love is the same. HOG embraces and encompasses the rider. Not everyone is about going to meetings and group rides. If you haven't tried it, why not do it just once. Come to a meeting. Come and join us for a HOG ride. Don't be shy, spread your wings. You may just meet some awesome people who speak your language. Look forward to seeing you on the road! 5 Page 5 of 8 A word from Great River Road HD Larry Ernst Greetings from Great River Road Harley-Davidson, Thanks to all that came out and helped us celebrate our 2nd anniversary party. What a great weekend. We had terrific weather, a great crowd and a good number of bike sales to boot. July was our best month ever for the number of new bikes we sold and the total number of bikes we have sold in one month. August brings the Sturgis bike rally and the annual Dealer Meeting. For all of you headed to Sturgis, ride safe, take lots of pictures and post your travels on Facebook so all of us that can't go get to see how much fun you are having. The annual dealer meeting is the third week of August. For those of you wondering what the new models will be, you're going to have to wait a bit longer. They haven't said how many new models they will be releasing at the show, but to stay on their pace of 50 new models in 5 years, I am expecting a few model releases this month. As we pass the midpoint of the riding season, I wanted to make a first mention of our winter storage program. I know that winter storage seems like a long time from now, but start thinking about it. Eric, our new Service Department manager, has some great ideas on how to improve the winter storage program, so keep an eye out for those details soon. We still have a few 2016 models remaining, one Ultra Limited, one Fatboy, a few Dynas and a few Sportsters. If you are thinking about getting a new bike, this is a great opportunity to get a brand new 2016 bike at unheard of pricing. We still have a few Bike Nights left, including this Friday, August 4th at the American Legion Hall in Hannibal. The next Bike Night will be Friday, August 18th at Kelly's and then Friday, September 1st at Barney's. We have really enjoyed these Bike Nights and look forward to seeing you all there. Larry Ernst Dealer Principal

7 Road Hazards Hey! Fellow HOG's, The Safety Corner - Safety Officer Page 7 of 8 Riding the Curves This is very good information and can save a lot of distress and problems on your ride. It happens to us all, that distraction, the oncoming vehicle - crowding the center line and all that stuff you have to look for as you approach, set up for and go around the curve. God bless, ride safe and keep the shiny side up! Riding the Curves You are riding down a road and as you enter a turn you feel as if you are going too fast and are heading for the tree on the side of the road. What should you do? Get on the brakes? Roll off the throttle? Bail? Believe it or not this is where a good number of inexperienced riders will get into trouble. As a novice rider approaches a turn most will instinctively look directly at a stationary object such as a tree, guard rail etc., (target fixation). Staring at an object makes the rider feel as if he/she is coming in too fast, in turn causing a panic situation. In Diagram 3.1 the rider target fixates on the tree on the side of the road and automatically heads right for it (path A). What most novice riders don't realize is that a motorcycle will head in the direction that the rider is looking, see the tree, and hit the tree. If the rider turns his/ her head however, and looks through the curve then the bike will also go in that direction (path B). So to answer the question it's none of the above. The one thing that you don't want to do when your bike is leaned over is dramatically change your speed. This will upset the balance of the motorcycle and could cause you to loose traction. Most motorcycles can accelerate, turn, and stop extremely well. They just don't like to do more than one of them at the same time. (Safety article cont d on next page)
8 Page 8 of 8 (Safety article cont d from page 7) Another mistake that novice riders tend to make is that they take curves too tight. That is the rider starts the turn too early, which can have a few disadvantages. By taking the turn too tight in Diagram 3.2 (below) the rider will be faced with a few challenges. Most importantly the riders view is obscured by the tree. You cannot see the puddle of oil, gravel, or other debris (A), or the car crossing over the center line (B). Another problem that our rider will have is by going into the turn so tight you will be forced to drift wide (close to the center line) on the exit. Notice that the rider turns in later giving the rider a more complete view of what is around the corner. The rider is then better prepared to handle any obstacles they encounter, because he was able to see them sooner. (Modified from Wiki) God bless and keep the shiny side up From Don Your Safety Guy
