We implemented new procedures according to the training we received at Harley Officers Training (HOT) in Henderson in February. The club officers continue to be supportive and active toward our new direction. We conducting our ride planning session in the March members meeting with a break-out session where numerous groups came up with inventive rides that appeal to all of our members. Those rides will be reviewed and implemented in the April meeting. Rides can be implemented by any member at any time, but this exercise formulated a sort of template for club rides. It s a great start to follow the HOG motto Lets ride and have fun. continued on page 8 Silver Award! Something to celebrate! Grand Canyon H-D wins the Silver Bar & Shield Award from Harley- Davidson! I sold my 83 Shovel to my cousin Larry out there, and decided to spend a few days riding with him, so I hauled my bike out for the trip as well. We were out every day (in a lot of rain) riding our bikes, and I put 500 miles on mine tooling around the area. One day we went out to Kern River - 60 miles in the rain - and had a great time. I took our HOG flag out with me to the lake and got a picture. The Kern river is the fastest running river in the world, and it s taken many lives. picture flows out of an old mine shaft. The Rock Springs Village has a really nice venue behind the cafe, with shaded picnic tables, grassy areas for the kids to play, GREAT BBQ sandwiches and smoked chicken, vendors, and live entertainment. The man-made babbling brook & water falls are a soothing sight in the desert, and it s a great place to kick back & hang out. HOG Wash 3

Safety Article - Stayin Safe Greetings Yavapai HOG Members. This month s safety article comes from Mr. Eric Trow. Mr. Trow is a Moto-journalist and Stayin Safe Advanced Rider Training principal/chief instructor. He is also the 2013 recipient of the AMA Outstanding Road Rider Award. I ve been in contact with Mr. Trow regarding some suggestions I may use in my efforts to promote safe riding within our HOG Chapter. We have also been discussing the possibility of Mr. Trow coming to the west and putting on a training/ riding program for our Chapter. His program is a hands-on actual riding program that covers actual riding techniques on actual various rides, ie. it is not a riding program that is limited to a parking lot. I ve asked Eric to provide me with five key points that beginner and advanced riders should be aware of/ remember when they intend to ride. His five points are as follows: As we plan our next adventure riding, it s also a good time to plan the next leg of our personal journey toward becoming better and safer riders. For starters, here are five key things that every rider should remember/ know. 1) 90% of Crashes are Avoidable Motorcycle safety experts agree that 90% or more of all motorcycle crashes are avoidable. That means that the power and responsibility to stay out of harm s way is ours. By looking farther down the road instead of just a few bike lengths ahead we can get information earlier and, as a result, have more time and space available to work with...continued on page 9 HOG Wash 4

Ride Planning Activity Not only are the members of Yavapai HOG a good looking group, they are apparently intelligent and creative as well! Evidence of that fact was apparent at our last general membership meeting, when we divided up into groups based on tokens randomly drawn by each member that matched a placard on the tables.. Each group was then asked to create one ride for each of the following categories: Destination, Event, Theme and Cause (community service). With heads down, comradery intact and brains in gear, the groups came up with the most amazing ideas for different, interesting, and innovative rides sure to provide the fun and exhilarating Harley adventures the club is all about. representative example of one of the rides they had developed to the other members. Oohs and aahs could be heard throughout the room as each idea was discussed and it was clear that the rides were all heartily accepted as activities that would generate excitement and anticipation. A listing of the rides has been distributed to each of the club members and we will be continuing the planning of the rides for ultimate placement on the calendar during the April 7th general meeting. Thanks to all of the members who participated and we hope to have even more members join the fun at our next general meeting. Linda Hutton, Activities The atmosphere was electric and lively as the groups proudly submitted their forms containing their group contributions and then presented a Let s Ride! HOG Wash 5

Dine Out Night Our Dine Out Night last month was at Guacamaya s Mexican Restaurant, it was a good turn out, and we all enjoyed time with friends and good food. Do you have an idea for Dine Out Night? A favorite restaurant? A favorite food? Let us know at our next meeting, or fill out the Ride Suggestion form on our website (not just for rides!) W GOODWIN ST, DOWNTOWN PRESCOTT Mon-Sat 6am-4pm, Sunday 6am-1pm NOP Benefit Ride Saturday, March 24th I rode down to join the Elks Riders charity event in Chandler. It was a poker run to raise funds for the Nations of Patriots organization. We rode from Chandler to Fountain Hills Legion Hall, to Cave Creek Legion Hall, to Scottsdale Elks Club, to Tempe Legion Hall, and then back to the Chandler Legion Hall for dinner. I drew a pair of eights (which amounted to nothing!). There were approximately 75 bikes on the ride, which means about $1500 was raised to help families of wounded veterans in AZ. Money raised in AZ, stays in AZ. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All in all about a 400 mile day for me! Challenge Accepted!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I want to invite Yavapai HOG to join me on July 9th, for the National Patriot Flag ride AZ segment from Prescott to Flagstaff. A $5 donation benefits the veteran families and includes lunch provided by Black Sheep. Todd Carter HOG Wash 7

HOG 35th Anniversary Merchandise Click to Shop Directors Memo Continued (from page 1) The board has started looking into ways of fund-raising that will benefit the club membership such as more and better door prizes, activities that the members do not have to fund out-of- pocket, such as the annual Christmas party. We hope to purchase equipment and banners that will allow us to set up recruitment at other events and venues. A few notes: Our Activities Officer, Linda Hutton, will be seeking ideas for new activities for club involvement that will allow for more public/club interaction. Members have attended the officers meeting in March and have given input to help give the board more insights and direction and it is greatly appreciated. The weather is changing and more riding and fun activities will be in the making, please take the opportunity in to participate in numerous options for a great riding experience. The March dine out was terrific at the Guacamaya Mexican Restaurant with 14 members participating. The Dine-out and the Dine-in is offering a nice change in that monthly activity. The April Dine-in will be another potluck hosted by Clifton Mitchell. We are still seeking volunteers to fill two officer positions; Publicity officer and Ladies of Harley officer. Please consider helping us out to fulfill of mission. I m very happy with the participation and enthusiasm within the club as we grow in our new direction. Remember in all of o u r r i d e s a n d activities, it s safety, safety, safety! Larry Neigel, Director HOG Wash 8

Safety Article Continued (from page 4) By actively scanning for potential risks and anticipating what might develop we can use that extra time to plan our actions instead of being destined to react. Another key to survival is to regularly ask ourselves as we ride, Could I stop my bike within the distance I can see? 2) We Go Where We Look There is perhaps no simpler concept when riding a motorcycle. Quite simply, we tend to go where we look. Yet, when we encounter a potential threat, our natural instinct is to stare it in the face. Ever seen a pothole and then ridden right into it? Found yourself entering a curve too quickly and then staring toward the guardrail? We must fight instinct and make a habit of looking to where we want to go versus where we fear we will go. Find the escape route and look to it. 3) The Front Brake is the Stopping Brake There s a reason they put those big disk brakes on the front of the motorcycle and the smallish ones on the rear. As we slow, the weight of the machine shifts forward, pressing that sticky front tire into the pavement and providing plenty of traction for braking. At the same time, it takes weight away from the rear wheel, reducing traction and making it much easier to skid. Squeeze the front brake with increasing pressure and keep the weight on the rear brake pedal light. Also recall that over 70% of your stopping power comes from your front brake...continued on page 10 Harley Ha-Ha s HOG Wash 9

Laughlin River Run is an annual motorcycle rally held in Laughlin, NV. It is the largest gathering of bikes and bikers in the Western US. The event drew an estimated 70,000 motorcycle enthusiasts in Wikipedia Safety Article Continued (from page 9) 4) Groups of Riders Are Just Individual Riders Riding Together When several riders get together for a ride, it s common to adopt a pack mentality. But if you think about it, there really is no good reason to abandon our individual standards, right? Each rider is ultimately responsible for himself as part of a group of riders just as he would be elsewhere. He should never feel pressure to ride faster than he is comfortable, nor give up the ability to use the full width of his lane to avoid danger. Because riding situations change moment to moment and from one end of the group to the other, each rider must have the flexibility to adjust his speed and/or lane position at any time. Group riding is fun. It can also be safe if each rider is permitted to ride his own ride. 5) You re Never Too Good or Too Old to Learn Something New If you golf, you know the importance of continual learning. The same goes for biking. Be a life-long learner who is interested in continually improving his game. After more than 30 years of riding, I still practice figure 8 s and U-turns in a local parking lot and try to take a least one formal rider training program each year. Consider taking a rider training course even a track day to continually improve your skills. You might be surprised to learn that riding can be even more fun the more you learn. Whether we re talking about the new and interesting places we will ride to or the levels of riding mastery we will achieve this season, the possibilities and the rewards that come with riding are nearly unlimited. Enjoy the journey! The ride training program Mr. Trow and I are considering is mostly the skill required in Group Riding. Group Riding is the type of ride many riders try to avoid. Getting comfortable with Group Riding is necessary if a rider does not want to always ride alone. I will keep you all appraised of when, where, etc. the training program progresses in later newsletters. Sam Clark - Safety Officer HOG Wash 10
