Weekly Highlights Week ending: 01/29/2016 International Academy of Flint Elementary 107 The Little Flaggers were waving their flags proudly this week. The k-3 grade girls were practicing there figure eights with their flags. The flaggers are practicing to the inspirational music Rise Up. Mr. Shakir s class and Mr. Jordan s class partnered up to work on their communications skills while doing sparks. The students did relays that encouraged them to communicate in order to complete the relay. FREEZE FRAME a colorful ice mountain was enjoyed by the 1 st graders using different food coloring and snow. They looked good enough to eat. The kindergarten Stir it Up Club enjoyed making Rice Krispy treats while enhancing their math and literacy skills Dye Elementary (C-A) 105 This week at Dye, the students enjoyed meeting some of the guest learning guides from other YouthQuest sites who came over to help. The students also worked hard on art again this week. Students used letters that depict different animals from the book Gone Wild to write their names, and they look great! Doyle-Ryder Elementary (Flint) 101 This week at Doyle Ryder the students explored and learned about the different Continents and how the world rotates. The students were blown back by how many Continents there are and how long it takes the world to rotate fully. The students also learned about Van Gogh and are currently working on painting the famous image "Starry Night". The paintings are coming out amazing, you would've thought Van Gogh painted them himself.
Eisenhower Elementary (Flint) This week, YouthQuest students enjoyed the activities at the Eisenhower Family Fun and Lead Testing Night! It was a big event, with lots of people, and the students had fun with face painting, balloon animals, dancing, and bicycling to power a smoothie machine! On Wednesday, students demonstrated their strength and agility in Cheerleading Club and in Sports Club, where they played an energetic game of kickball! The January theme is Freeze Frame and the students are creating a book of photographs about YouthQuest at Eisenhower! Freeman Elementary (Flint) It was a week of fun problem solving for the students at Freeman YouthQuest. Students beat the winter blues by getting into games that made them think and figure out where each other flags were hidden in a game of Stratego. At first, the boys thought it was too academic but after a few minutes, they couldn't wait to play against the winner! Between clubs and themes, the students expressed a need to move around some so the Learning Guides got them going by playing challenging team building games. The Hoola Hoop Race sounded like chaos but was actually kids having fun working together!
Neithercut Elementary (Flint) Ice, ice, baby! This week was one for the record books at Neithercut! We started this week off making "marshmallow molecules" with one of our favorite vendors, Einstein by Design! Students kicked off with the "Flava Flav" club a flavored water club! To end the week on a chillier note, students, and staff enjoyed an ice skating field trip! Freeze frame was chilly, and a very fun month. Come enjoy the great environment of YouthQuest Wildcat students at Neithercut Elementary! Pierce Elementary (Flint) This week students completed their final golf lesson and are planning to continue to learn the game of golf! This opportunity to get a foundation of the game was well worth it! The Black History Month Program is coming along well and is eagerly anticipated. ArtQuest is also an event that is eagerly anticipated. The students have several cool new ideas of creative artistry to display. Holmes STEM 3-7 Academy (Flint) 110 This week at Holmes STEM Academy we held programming at our site, only on Monday because the building was being prepared for a town hall meeting scheduled for Wednesday, that was nationally televised. For Sparks, the 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students played dodgeball and basketball.
Potter Elementary (Flint) 75 International Academy of Flint Middle & High School 45 This week was another short week at Potter, but we had a blast! Students in 2-5 grades were able to trace life size pictures while exploring different types of movement. Mr. Jolly's group was able to do a Valentines day themed taste test, while also getting to know their new tutors coming in on Mondays. Students also were able to go into their clubs and plan some activities they would like to do in the future. Students in Potter Club began working with clay and making gifts for Valentine's Day. On Wednesday we traveled to Courtland Center to go see the movie "Norm of the North" about a polar bear named Norm trying to protect his land. Our popcorn and pop, fun filled day was the perfect way to end our week and we cant wait to come back again on Monday! The high school students have committed a crime, a crime that will solve the mystery of the lost students. CSI students are learning how to solve the crime by finding evidence, bodies, finger prints and that s just the beginning. Let s take a trip in solving a crime.see you at the crime scene Randels Elementary (C-A) FORE!!! 60 of the 100 students teed off this week and improved some skills in golfing. Our Youth brilliant minds went to work with their very own original creations. There were roller coasters, and paper gardens in Mrs. Julie s club rotation. While Ms. Brielle theme rotation featured an inspiring "With my hands I can help Change.." project. "Help homeless people", "Cure Illnesses", "decrease unemployment", were just a few YQ responses. The future sure does look bright! The goal of YouthQuest is to provide youth with engaging after school experiences to excel, excite, and explore.
Durant Tuuri-Mott Elementary (Flint) 101 The busy bees at DTM are working diligently on their ArtQuest projects and perfecting their golf skills. Kindergarteners did an archeological dig in blocks of ice illustrating the Ice Age. They had a fantastic time chipping, hammering and brushing the ice until their Tyrannosaurus Rex, Concaventors and Centaurus came to life. The first grade students talked and designed about life in a snow globe. I know you can't wait to see this one at ArtQuest. The third and fourth graders had a great time with Kay Kelley as they dressed up in fun clothes and were acting out their well written plays. The students had an awesome time being a Knight in shining armor and a Lady in waiting in a velvet gown. The students learned about what it was to be an actor on the stage and a part of the audience.
