The next book is The Compound, by S.A. Bodeen. Eli s family has lived in the underground Compound for six years. The world they knew is gone but Eli can t help but wonder if he d rather take his chances outside. The Compound book club will begin Tuesday, November 13 th at 7:50 in The Den. Book Club is limited to the first fifteen students who sign up! Do you have a veteran family or friend, whom you would like to honor? In celebration of Veterans Day, student council will be putting together a wall of pictures honoring the veterans of our students and staff. Please pick up a form from the library and bring in a picture of your family member or friend whom you would like to honor or memorialize. If you don t have a picture we will place the branch of military emblem, along with the name and information you provide, on the wall. You may also email the pictures to our student council : stucosms@salemschools.us Field Trips and Other Fun Days Sixth Grade field trip to Mr. Gatti s Learning Center will be on Tuesday, November 20 th. Students will not be able to attend the trip if they have 2 or more After School Detentions, 2 or more Bus Violations, and/or 1 or more ISS/OSS/OSA starting on Monday, August 27 th. More details will be provided as we get closer to the field trip date. Tickets are now on sale. They can be purchased at the Salem High School Athletic office Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. until November 21. Tickets will also be available during the Girls Varsity basketball game on Tues. Nov. 20 vs. West Washington and the Boys Varsity basketball game vs. West Washington on Wed. Nov. 21. Pre-sale ticket prices are $8 (students) and $10 (adults). At the door prices are $10 (students) and $12 (adults). Final pre-sale ticket availability will be at the boys game on 11/21. Reserved seats, $15 include: Premium Seating and Poster Voucher. Courtside Plus, $25 includes: 10 minute Meet and Greet with 2-3 players 45minutes before tip-off, Free Lanyard, Free Team Photo, and a $10 Discount on Replica Wizards Jersey. The names of the first 100 general admission ticket purchasers will go into a drawing for a Salem 10 game season ticket ($50 value). The Wizards are coming to Salem! Your Vote Counts: Young Hoosier Books will hit the shelves this week. Students who read five from their grade category and pass the read and quiz test, will become an eligible Young Hoosier voter for the state competition. Young Hoosier voters will receive a free book at the voter breakfast which takes place in April. Once you ve taken the quiz see Mrs. Suvak or Mrs. Nice for a Young Hoosier slip. SALEM CHOIRS presents "BOHEMIAN SUPPER CLUB" - A cast of 45+ performers will fill the air with song Thurs, Nov. 8-Fri., Nov. 9-Sat., Nov. 10 at 7:15, and Sun. Nov. 11 at 2 pm. Ticket sales open at the SHS Bookstore Monday, during school hours only (no telephone sales). Tickets are also available at SalemChoirs.org. Sales continue as long as seats remain available. Tutoring and Homework Help CAST Tutoring meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Southern Hills Church. Transportation is provided from school to the church. Students meet in Commons area of the cafeteria to board the bus. See Mrs. Smith in the office for more information. Math Help is available on Wednesdays with Mr. Heath Nantz in the office conference room, from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. Student pick up is outside the cafeteria doors (#18). See Mrs. Smith in the office for more information. Student Poetry Contest Deadline is Wednesday, November 14 One entry per person, and the poem must be your own original work. It can be about anything you like, but it must be a minimum of two lines up to a maximum of 20 lines in length. $500 First Place Prize awarded in each Grade Division: 3-5 6-8 9-12 Cash prizes for entering $25 $150 awarded by random drawings School with highest participation level wins a new computer!

Activities and Clubs Mondays: Tabletop Games with Mr. Heath Nantz and Mr. Brenden Davidson after school (3:30 4:30) in the Conference Room to play table top games such as Checkers, Monopoly, and Dungeons and Dragons. Parents should pick up at 4:30 at the cafeteria doors. Tuesdays: Bible Club meets at 7:30 AM in the Choir Room with leaders Ms. Allison Ezzell and Mr. Cash Hunsley. G.E.M (Girls Empowerment Movement) meets at 3:30 PM in the FACS Room with leader Ms. Megan Broughton from the Purdue Extension Office. Wednesdays: FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes including, but not limited to athletes) meets at 3:30 PM in the FACS Room with leaders Mr. Donald Stinnet and Mr. Cash Hunsley. NHD (National History Day) Club Do you like history? Is there a favorite time period or topic you like to read and learn about? Why not put that interest go good use? Be a participant in this year s National History Day Competition. The time to start working on a project is now! This year s theme, Triumph and Tragedy in History has lots and lots of possibilities. So, if you like creating exhibits, directing documentary films, designing websites, or bringing history to life through history plays, plan to join the NHD group on Wednesdays beginning September 26. The competition at Hanover College is March 16 th, but it is definitely not too early to start. Salem Middle School has had lots of students go on to win awards at the state contest in Indianapolis and even the national contest in Washington, DC. You can be the next outstanding history representative for Salem Middle School. See Mrs. Wrye in for details. Meet with Ms. Deb Wrye either before school from 7:15-8:00 or after school from 3:20-4:30 in Room 233. STEAM Club is looking for members who wish to explore the possibilities of Science! The club is accepting applications now through October 1st. Please pick up your application from Mrs. Barrett, Mrs. Mahuron, or Mrs. Napier in the upstairs north wing. Meetings will be in the Science Rooms beginning October 17th at 3:30 PM. Thursdays Book Club is open to any seventh or eighth grade student. Those interested in joining should take an information sheet from the pocket outside Mrs. Rowe s room (Room 229). Fill out the information form and return to Mrs. Rowe. Book Club is limited to the first fifteen students. Students will also be encouraged to respond to and post discussion questions on the Google classroom. The first book is titled Peak. When fourteen-year-old Peak Marcello s long lost father presents the opportunity for them to summit Mt. Everest together, Peak doesn t even consider saying no even though he suspects there are some strings attached. If he makes it to the top before his birthday, he will be the youngest person to stand above 29,000 feet. Told in Peak s own words, this is the exhilarating, gut-wrenching story of what happened on that climb to the top of the world a climb that changed everything. Meet in The Den on Thursday morning from 7:50 AM -8:14 AM Student Council meets in the Library at 7:45 AM with Ms. Nice. 6th Grade Student Council applications will be distributed in December. Fridays Prognosticators Club Are you a college game or pro fan? Why not put that interest to good use? Join other prognosticators to talk about Football, and predict the winners and losers of the weekend games. Bring your Chromebook in order to make your predictions. The prognosticators will meet on Fridays until after the NCAA Championship game and the Super Bowl. The student with the best picking percentage will win a prize. See you Friday in the Den!! SISTERS will meet at 7:45 AM on Fridays in Room 105 with Ms. Bailey and Ms. Hartsfield. TBA SADD Students Against Destructive Decisions will meet with Ms. McIntire. NJHS National Junior Honor Society Members will meet periodically with Mc. McIntire.

Middle School Information: cell phones should be turned off and stored in lockers at the start of the day. Please remember: power off to focus on school when you arrive. Doors #1 and #2 open at 7:15 am. Students should report directly to the cafeteria. Breakfast service begins at 7:45 am. Students may go to lockers at the 7:50 am bell, then report to 1st period classrooms. Class begins at 8:15 am after the Pledge of Allegiance. Students are dismissed at 3:14. Students may be picked up at Door #2. Students should be picked up 3:45-4:00 if they do not ride a bus. Students should arrive in class each day with Chromebooks charged and ready for use. Beginning Wednesday, August 15 If you forget your device at home or if it is not charged for class, a Silent Lunch will be issued. Remember that charging stations are available in the cafeteria before school and during lunch if needed. At lunch, chairs should not be moved to other tables. Please pick up after yourself when finished. Students will be dismissed to outside by monitors. 7th grade students will be escorted to class by teachers at the end of lunch. Reminder: North Harrison Street is for bus traffic only. Please drop students off at Door #2 in the horseshoe driveway. Students: When you are called to leave school you must sign out in the Student Services Office with Mrs. King. You should not exit through the glass doors during school hours. Remember: students attending home events or participating in Practices as a student Athlete / cheerleader / Manager are not permitted to stay after school unsupervised. You must be with a coach at the designated place and time and will not be allowed in the building until then. If you are attending a home event, Doors open 30 minutes prior to the event. Physicals must be on file to practice or tryout for any sport. Please be sure to stop by the office to pick up Physicals, Concussion forms, and Drug Test Consent Forms if you have not done so.
