FIRST AID POLICY This plicy is written with cnsideratin t ur schl cmmitment t the Rights f the Child and ur achievement f becming a Rights Respecting Schl. Althugh direct reference t this is nt cntinuusly made, this plicy has been written with full awareness f ur respnsibility and cmmitment t this initiative. This plicy utlines the Schl s respnsibility t prvide adequate and apprpriate first aid t pupils, staff, parents, visitrs and cntractrs and the prcedures in place t meet that respnsibility. This plicy shuld be read in cnjunctin with the DfEE (1998) Guidance n First Aid fr Schls. (Guidance attached t plicy). The plicy is reviewed annually. Aims T identify the first aid needs f the Schl in accrdance with the Management f Health and Safety at Wrk Regulatins 1992 and 1999. T ensure that first aid prvisin is available at all times while peple are n the Schl premises and while n schl visits in accrdance with the Health and Safety First Aid legislatin 1981. Objectives T appint the apprpriate number f suitably trained peple as Appinted Persns (see Annex A) and First Aiders (See Annex A) t meet the needs f the schl. T prvide relevant training and ensure mnitring f training needs is reviewed yearly. T prvide sufficient and apprpriate resurces and facilities. T keep staff and parents infrmed f the Schl s First Aid arrangements. T keep accident recrds and t reprt t the HSE as required under the Reprting f Injuries, Diseases and Dangerus Occurrences Regulatins 1995. T give clear structures and guidelines t all staff regarding first aid. T undertake a risk assessment f the first aid requirements f the schl. (see Annex B) Persnnel The LA and the Schl Gvernrs are respnsible fr the health and safety f their emplyees and anyne else n the schl premises. They must ensure that risk
assessments f the Schl are undertaken and that the appintments, training and resurces fr first aid arrangements are apprpriate and in place. The Schl Gvernrs shuld ensure that the insurance arrangements prvide full cver fr claims arising frm actins f staff acting within the scpe f their emply. The Headteacher is respnsible fr putting the plicy int practice and fr develping detailed prcedures. The Headteacher shuld ensure that the plicy fr first aid is available t all staff and parents. In the event f a medical emergency and the schl being unable t cntact the parents/carers the Headteacher will act in Lcum Parentis A list f First Aiders and Appinted Persns are kept with this plicy (see Annex A) Duties f an Appinted Persn (Guidance n First Aid DfEE 1998) Takes charge when smene is injured r becmes ill Lks after the first-aid equipment eg restcking the first aid cntainer, rdering equipment. Ensures that an ambulance r ther prfessinal medical help is summned when apprpriate. In additin t the abve, First Aiders are required t fllw the prcedures utlined in this plicy. *Althugh Appinted Persns d nt have t be first aiders, it is the plicy f Dean Bank that Appinted Persns have cmpleted Paediatric First Aid Training and Emergency First Aid Training. Main Duties f a First Aider (Guidance n First Aid DfEE 1998) T give immediate help t casualties with cmmn injuries r illnesses and thse arising frm specific hazards at schl. When necessary, ensure that an ambulance r ther prfessinal medical help is called. In additin t the abve, First Aiders are required t fllw the prcedures utlined in this plicy.
First Aid Equipment and Facilities The lcatin f First Aid Kits in schl are Staff rm (Large First Aid Kit and Travel Kit fr schl visits) Fundatin Stage Unit First Aid Statin in Clakrm The Appinted Persns, directed by the Headteacher, will ensure that the apprpriate number f first-aid cntainers is available and restcked when necessary. (Recrd f this will be kept within the First Aid Kits) All first aid bxes are marked with a white crss n a green backgrund. The bxes are stcked in accrdance with the HSE recmmended and mandatry cntents. (see DfEE Guidance n First Aid fr Schls). (Fr lcatin f First Aid Bxes see Annex A) First aid bxes and equipment are taken n all schl educatinal and sprting visits. Basic hygiene prcedures must be fllwed by staff administering first aid treatment. Single-use dispsable glves must be wrn when treatment invlves bld r ther bdy fluids. A list f the lcatin f First Aid bxes is kept with this plicy and signpsted within schl. Infrmatin n First Aid arrangements The Head teacher will infrm all emplyees at the schl f the fllwing: The arrangements fr recrding and reprting accidents. The arrangements fr First Aid. Thse emplyees with qualificatins in first Aid. The lcatin f First Aid kits. In additin the head teacher will ensure that signs are displayed thrughut the schl prviding the fllwing infrmatin: names f emplyees with first aid qualificatins. lcatin f first aid bxes. All members f staff will be made aware f the schl s first aid plicy. During lunch break cnsultatin frm a member f First-Aid staff need nt be sught in the event f minr incidents which may be treated with Pastral care by Lunch Time Supervisrs. Examples f these are: Minr cuts r grazes Pupils wh feel - r wh are actually sick Minr marks t the bdy (bruises), skipping rpe burns etc.
Pupil accidents invlving their head The Schl recgnises that accidents invlving the pupil s head can be prblematic because the injury may nt be evident and the effects nly becme nticeable after a perid f time. Where emergency treatment is nt required, all bumps t the head will be reprted t parents with a fllw-up letter (see prcedures belw Recrd Keeping and Reprting Accidents). Recrd Keeping and Reprting Accidents TAs (trained first aiders) at break times and Lunch Time Supervisrs recrd all incidents in the accident bk, which is kept at the first aid statin in the clakrm. An accident slip is cmpleted and passed t the class teacher at the end f break / lunchtime. Head injury frms are nly cmpleted by TAs. Parents are ntified by telephne f any incident, ther than thse deemed minr, when First Aid has been administered. Parents are cntacted by telephne if a child has received a bump t the head, a wasp r bee sting r a significant incident. Fr mre serius injuries, a Durham Lcal Authrity Accident Frm is cmpleted n-line. In the event f a medical emergency and the Schl is unable t cntact parents/carers then the Headteacher acts in Lcum Parentis. Statutry requirements fr Accident Reprting The Gverning bdy will implement the LA s prcedures fr reprting: all accidents t emplyees all incidents f vilence and aggressin. The Gverning bdy is aware f its statutry duty under RIDDOR in respect f reprting the fllwing t the Health and Safety executive as it applies t emplyees. An accident that invlves an emplyee being incapacitated frm wrk fr mre than seven cnsecutive days (nt including the day the accident has ccurred) (changes made frm 6 April 2012 frm 3 t seven days) An accident which requires admittance t hspital fr in excess f 24 hurs. Death f an emplyee. Majr injury such as fracture, amputatin, dislcatin f shulder, hip, knee r spine. Fr nn-emplyees and pupils an accident will nly be reprted under RIDDOR:
where it is related t wrk being carried ut by an emplyee r cntractr and the accident results in death r majr injury, r; It is an accident in schl which requires immediate emergency treatment at hspital Fr each instance where the Head teacher cnsiders an accident t a visitr r pupil is reprtable under RIDDOR the advice f the authrity will be sught. Where the injury is an emergency, an ambulance will be called fllwing which the parent will be called. Where hspital treatment is required but it is nt an emergency, then the Head teacher will cntact the parents fr them t take ver respnsibility fr the child. If the parents cannt be cntacted then the Head teacher may decide t transprt the pupil t hspital. Where the Head teacher makes arrangements fr transprting a child then the fllwing pints will be bserved: Only staff cars insured t cver such transprtatin will be used. N individual member f staff shuld be alne with a pupil in a vehicle. The secnd member f staff will be present t prvide supervisin fr the injured pupil. Administering First Aid Off Site First Aid prvisin must be available at all times including ff site n schl visits. The level f first aid prvisin fr an ff-site visit r activity will be based n risk assessment. A trained appinted persn r first aider will accmpany all ff site visits and activities alng with a suitably stcked First Aid bx. The First Aider must be aware f the cntents f the First Aid bx and its lcatin at all times thrughut the visit. All adults present n the visit shuld be made aware f the arrangements fr First Aid. If any First Aid treatment is given the Grup Leader will advise the schl ffice, by mbile telephne if urgent, r n return s that the pupil s parents can be infrmed.
Training Teaching and supprt staff will be invited t attend training when necessary. The First Aid C-rdinatr is respnsible fr ensuring staff training is up t date Persnnel.
