Bringing Clubs Information and Updates from the Auckland Centre Welcome to edition eight of the Auckland Bowls Bulletin! This will be sent out to each club and posted on our website every two months. We hope you enjoy reading the information! Please forward by email to as many of your members as you can. The Bulletin forms part of our overall strategy to improve our level of communication with clubs and individual members. CLUB DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENTS A major project of Auckland Bowls is the introduction of Club Development Agreements with clubs in Auckland. Thank you to those clubs that have engaged with us in such a positive manner so far. The Rawhiti Committee has signed off agreements with the following clubs (six club groups): Glen Eden Titirangi RSA New Lynn Pringle Park Royal Oak St Heliers Kohimarama Pakuranga EDITION EIGHT - September 2018 Henderson Blockhouse Bay Te Atatu Peninsula Pt Chevalier Bridge Park Glendowie Howick Bucklands Beach You may have seen advertising for Bowls Development roles recently. These are as a result of the agreements with clubs and will provide an additional resource to help grow and develop our clubs. Our goal is to sign up a further three club groups by the end of December and the remaining groups by the end of April 2019. If your club is keen to be involved in this project but have not yet had contact with us, then please contact Steve Clifton steve@ aucklandbowls.co.nz to register your interest. Please be patient as we work through this important strategy. With support from the Rawhiti Fund we have been able to allocate $2.5m over a five-year period to support the growth and development of our sport. AUCKLAND BOWLS AGM The Auckland Bowls AGM was held on Monday 30th July at the Mt Eden Bowling Club. If you haven t seen a copy of the Minutes, please CLICK HERE. You will also find the latest Board Minutes as well. PRESIDENTS DAY The Auckland Bowls Presidents Day will be held on Sunday 14th October at the Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club. This is an opportunity for the Presidents of all Auckland bowling clubs to meet with each other on a social occasion. It is a fun day with the opportunity to win a prize as a bonus! It is also a chance for you to recognise the contribution of your executive and/or hard working volunteers by asking them to be part of your team. We will be utilising two greens at Carlton, so at this stage we are asking that you please only enter one team and if another team can be accommodated the Auckland Bowls office will get in touch with your club. Entries close on Friday 28th September.

BOWLS CLUB INSURANCE A message from Bowls New Zealand: The Apex Bowlers Insurance Scheme has been under away now for the past 6 weeks where we have had a great response with enquiries from over 150 Clubs throughout NZ. A number have already switched to the Scheme and many more have indicated they will on the renewal date of their existing Policies. The savings have been very encouraging where they have averaged around 18% on their current policies with some up to as much as 40% which is money that can be used on projects around the Club where you may have been waiting to do for a while. To those Clubs who still considering in getting a quote or may not have received my original email you can by sending your Current Policy Wording, Policy Schedule along with your Tax Invoice/Premium to me keith@ bowlsnewzealand.co.nz for a no obligation quote to compare with your current Policy. If your Policy isn t due for a while it would still be a good time to action and send me your information and I can forward, you a quote closer to your renewal date. If you have any queries or would like to discuss further, please do not hesitate to contact me as I m only too willing in trying get your Club the best possible cover at very competitive premiums. Keith Slight Community Development Officer-Central Email: keith@bowlsnewzealand.co.nz Mob: 021 966177 HAVE A GO 2018 Have A Go Day is a great way to introduce new people to bowls. Our research has shown that when people Have A Go their perceptions of the game change dramatically and they are more likely to play again and most importantly recommend the game to their friends and family. Holding Have A Go events in the spring time and at the start of the playing season gives clubs an opportunity to promote future events (eg. Business house) as well as club membership. The risk of course is the fickle spring weather ruining the day, as it did last year when a massive tropical storm hit Auckland on the morning of the planned Have A Go day. This was very frustrating for participating clubs who had put is a lot of hard work to make the day a success and for Auckland bowls who invest a significant amount of time, resources and funding to support the event. As a result of last year s rain it was decided that instead of focussing on a single event and its inherent risks, that Have A Go day would become Have A Go month. This allows clubs to run as many or as few events as they like help to minimise the risk of weather interruptions and to offer greater options for people to come along to Have A Go. Once again, Auckland Bowls is supporting Have A Go events through an extensive promotional campaign under the banner of Let the Good Times Roll and providing participating clubs with materials to promote their events locally. To date, we have 23 clubs participating in Have A Go Month with over 50 events planned. Dates and times of all events can be found on the Play Bowls website and also via Event Finda. It would be fantastic if all Auckland Bowls clubs, irrespective of participating could promote Have A Go month on club websites and social media.

One of the best ways to encourage people to Have A Go is for personal invitations from club members so if you love bowls, why not encourage one of your non-bowling friends along to have a go if everyone in our community could convince just one of their family or friends to take up the sport and become a club member, our playing membership of our sport would double overnight! For further information or copies of promotional materials please contact Paul Tuckley 021 337778 paul@aucklandbowls.co.nz www.playbowls.co.nz CENTRE HANDBOOK The Auckland Bowls handbook for the new season will be sent out this week. Thanks for your patience. SATURDAY INTERCLUB Thanks to the clubs that responded to the question about your preferred Interclub Format. The results favoured the status quo without bonus fours. The half day sixes will continue with the same format of 6 players per side 2 x triples teams. Half Day Sixes Saturday Interclub: Sides of 6: 2 x any combination triples teams (1 hour 30 minute games) 6 Weeks: Depending on the number of entries received we will playing in sections over a 6- week period. PLAY BOWLS WEBSITE As many of you already know the Play Bowls website was developed as a resource where non-bowlers can go to find out about the sport of Lawn Bowls. In addition to information on how to play, the Play Bowls website also contains a detailed calendar of events where social bowlers can participate in the sport, links to all Auckland Bowls Clubs and information on club facilities to hire. The target audience for Play Bowls is nonbowlers/general public and all of Auckland bowls promotional activity directs visitors to the Play Bowls site where they can find information on the sport and more importantly where and when to play. At our peak last year we were getting 500 hits per week on the website with the most popular pages on the Play Bowls Site are Events Calendar Club Directory Club Facilities This is fantastic free advertising for all Auckland Bowls Club. We do send out regular reminders to clubs to provide us with information on social bowling activities yet very few clubs have provided information. All that we need from clubs is the; Name of the event Dates of the event (if a six week tournament provide start and end date) Times Cost (If it includes food then please say) Any other terms and conditions If you have any images or some text about the event supply that too, but Auckland Bowls can do this for you. Similarly, if your club hires out the club house/ greens for corporate events (team building, Christmas parties) or for weddings, birthday parties etc then let us know. All we need is a little information and a couple of photographs. In addition to the Play Bowls website, Auckland Bowls also lists all social bowling events provided on the Event Finda website www.eventfinda. co.nz which is a resource that is widely used by people looking for things to do in Auckland. This is a wonderful free resource for clubs so please send your information through. Paul Tuckley 021 337778 paul@aucklandbowls.co.nz www.playbowls.co.nz ONLINE ENTRIES This season we will be extending our online entry system so that it is used for all Auckland Championship events. This means the onus will be on individual members to enter directly with Auckland Bowls rather than through the Club Secretary. After closing, we will then send the entries to the clubs for confirmation that the players are playing members of the club they state on the entry form. The system has been used successfully over the past couple of seasons for events such as the NZ Open and Women s Premier Open Singles. The change will also make life easier for our hard-working Club Secretaries! All we ask is that you promote the events and encourage your members to enter. The change will come into play for the Men s and Women s Pairs which is played on the 8th and 9th December. Other events such as Interclub will remain with the Club to enter. We will promote this change through our Website, Friday Flash and Facebook in due course.

BOWLS3FIVE 1-5 YEAR INTERCLUB Auckland Bowls with the help of funds from the Mission Bay Bowling Club (on closing) are very excited to introduce the Mission Bay Bowls3Five 1-5 Year Interclub. Mission Bay Bowling Club were keen to see their remaining funds used to promote bowls for new players. With the introduction of the Bowls3Five format by Bowls NZ we have been able to introduce a fantastic modern tournament with great prize money provided by Mission Bay Bowling Club. This event will start on Thursday 1st November and will run for 6 Thursdays with the Final being played on the 6th December. All games will begin at 6pm (or as close to as possible) and be at various clubs across Auckland. The format for the Bowls3Five 1-5 Year Interclub is 6 players, making two teams of any combination triples with a round robin of 2 sets of 5 ends being played. In the event the sets are tied, a one end tie-breaker will be the decider. Games will last no more than an hour. Adding to the thrill of the short format of the game, a Power Play will be available to each team once per game with double points for the nominated Power Play end. Astute followers of the format know this is where games can be won or lost depending on the strategy deployed. $4,000 of prize money is up for grabs so get your juniors together and enter! We would very much like to see your club enter your 1-5 Year bowlers into this great competition. We will do our very best to zone these games, so your club isn t travelling across town in the crazy Auckland traffic! There is no limit to the amount of sides a club can enter, and we will do our best to accommodate composite teams from clubs that cannot field a full side on their own. Players can also be changed from week to week if some are not available for all 6 weeks. CLICK HERE for Conditions of Play. Entries close on the 17th October. SUMMERSET NATIONAL SINGLES AND PAIRS Auckland Bowls is very proud to be the host Centre for the Summerset National Singles and Pairs to be held from the 2-8 January 2019. This Bowls NZ event is the pinnacle of domestic bowls competition. Carlton Cornwall Bowls will be headquarters for the event. We will also require many other clubs and greens to cater for the expected number of entrants. This will require the support of many volunteers umpires, markers, greens staff, catering etc. This is advanced warning! We would love for as many clubs as possible to get in behind and support this event, so please have a chat at club committee level and see what your club can do. We will need host clubs for both singles yes eight markers per green will be required and pairs, particularly for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th January, with less clubs required in the latter stages as the tournament heads into post section.
