MACKENZIE RED ANGUS Herd Established 1962 WELCOME TO CANADA S OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY RUNNING RED ANGUS BULL SALE! Welcome to our 36th Annual Red Angus bull sale! We welcome Don Heggie as our Guest Consignor again this year. We have a great selection of bulls for you to choose from - many bulls are sired by the breed s most popular A.I. sires as well as natural services. The demand for Angus genetics is sweeping the country and the future looks excellent. Most of the high selling calves in the fall sales were Angus tagged. Angus tags are the easiest way to be recognized for Angus branded beef programs. Red Angus must be tagged to qualify for these programs. We feel very strongly about this and are giving a $25.00 credit to each Red Angus bull sold through the sale to purchase the lime green ear tags that we feel will definitely increase the market value of your calves. Commercial Cattlemen - remember - a good bull purchased this spring will result in a great set of calves for you to sell in the fall of 2008! We look forward to meeting and visiting with you all on the 24th of March. Thank you for your interest in our program. The Mackenzies. MACKENZIE RED ANGUS MOUNTAIN VIEW, AB. Mackenzie Brothers Recognized!! 2006 ALBERTA ANGUS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES The Mackenzie Brothers - Don, Ted, Mark, Ken & Rodney (inset) - were inducted into the Alberta Angus Hall of Fame as BREED BUILDERS at the Alberta Angus Annual Meeting in December 2006. [condensed Article as published in Angus World - The Angus Angle - Feb./2007 - by Rob Smith] "There are very few people we can honour in the Angus business for their dedication to the breed who are true pioneers; the Mackenzie Bros. are a notable exception. They broke trail and created a road that so many followers would later pave. They are trailblazers and entrepreneurs and now, Alberta Angus Assoc. Hall of Famers The Mackenzie Bros. As they went forth in the 1960's and took a gamble on a huge unknown--red Angus cattle... I ve talked to many longstanding and respected Angus cattlemen who recall this period. They say the Mackenzie s were watched very intently by all Angus breeders. They were watched because of skepticism, because of fear of the unknown, because of prejudice. But they were watched. Having heard and read about the growing anomaly in American Angus scene known as Red Angus, Rod Jr. and Don headed down to Becton Stock Farm s sale in 1962. They purchased two bred heifers, a cow/calf pair and a young bull - Beckton Larkebelang 130. This little herd constituted the birth of Red Angus in Canada. Having a relatively new breed to popularize, the Mackenzie "Reds" made their first appearance at shows in 1970, taking in every possible summer show in Alberta and Saskatchewan; to the PNE in Vancouver; and to the Toronto royal Winter Fair. A major risk would be taken, however, in 1972 when the Mackenzie s held the first production sale of Red Angus cattle in Canadian history. In talking to many people, it seems as though Rod was the brother who first became known to the general public and the Angus world at large. As he was tearing down the show road in those early years, he garnered an excellent reputation for sportsmanship and became extremely well liked. The family continue their dedication to Red Angus cattle, however, and are still making an impact today almost 45 years after that original purchase. Along the way, Mackenzie s have received many honours. In 1979 the Mackenzie Bros. were recognized by the American Red Angus Assoc. with the "Pioneer Breeder Award". They were the first recipients of this award after all seven of the ARA charter members had been recognized. In 2004, when the ARA celebrated its s 50th Anniversary, Mackenzie Bros. Was named one of the "50 most Influential Breeders"; they were the only Canadians to achieve inclusion on this list. Over the past 25 years, both Don and Mark s immediate family operations have been singled out by the Canadian Red Angus Promotional Soc. as the Purebred Breeder of the Year. Finally, the Canadian Angus Association name Mackenzie Bros. their Honourary President in 2004." 5

Canadian Angus Association EPD Explanation EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDS) Statistics generated for individual cattle through national genetic evaluations. EPDs: allow breeders to estimate a young animal s breeding value as a parent allow a fair comparison of breeding value by removing environmental bias such as climate, feed and special management best tool available to compare animals between herd, countries and year of birth help breeders make informed decisions regarding breeding stock selection by evaluating numerous traits such as growth-related traits (BW, WW, YW, Milk), carcass (REA, FAT, %IMF, etc.) and reproductive efficiency (CE, MCE, SC) estimate the group performance of one parent compared to the group performance of another parent, assuming similar mates EPD s evaluate group averages and offspring s performance. They can not predict individual performance or weights. For example, if Bull A (weaning weigh EPD of +10) and Bull B (WW of +60) were randomly mated with ten similar cows, we would expect the group average weaning weight of Bull A s offspring to be 50 lbs. lighter than that of Bull B s (60-10 = 50). To evaluate seedstock, use EPDs, pedigree and visual assessment. With EPDs, the concept of intermediate optimums works best. Selection for one trait or for extremes generally results in unexpected consequences due to genetic correlations - for example, intense selection for high yearling weight will also increase birth weight. Successful cattle breeding requires a thoughtful and balanced approach to optimize fertility, growth and carcass merit while improving profitability and efficiency. 6
