From: FS-Office of the Chief Sent: Sunday, August 14, 2016 1:22 PM To: FS-All FS Subject: ***MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF***Mourning Our Loss We are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Justin Beebe, a firefighter with the Lolo Hotshot Crew based in Missoula, Montana. Justin lost his life Saturday, August 13, while fighting the Strawberry Fire in Great Basin National Park in Nevada. Our deepest condolences go out to Justin s family, those he worked with, and his friends. It takes great courage to be the person willing to fight wildland fires. Yet despite the courage it takes to work in this profession, it does not lessen the sadness we feel when we lose one of our own. As details become available we will pass them on, but for now I ask that you keep Justin s family and those close to him in your thoughts. To those touched by this heart-wrenching event, please know we are thinking of you; we are here for you and we are sending you our support in this time of loss. Chief Tidwell - From the Lolo National Forest, Forest Supervisor to employees: This is difficult news to share with all of you and I wish I had all employees together in one room to make this announcement. Yesterday we lost Justin Beebe from the Lolo Hotshot Crew. Justin was killed yesterday afternoon by a falling snag while assigned to the Strawberry Fire in Great Basin National Park in Nevada. The Forest and the Missoula Ranger District are taking all steps 3 / 10

at this moment to support members of the Hotshot Crew. Details of the accident are still being gathered and an accident investigation will be initiated. Every employee is impacted by such a tragic loss. Some of you knew Justin, others did not. I can tell you he was a fine person and tremendous employee and his loss is deeply felt. I spoke with his mother late last night, and we are providing all needed support to them. Justin was from Vermont and this was his first season with the Lolo Hotshot Crew. His mother Betsy and the rest of his family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers. I will share more information with you as it becomes available. For now, please reach out to your fellow employees and support them and keep Justin s family and friends in your thoughts. Tim Garcia, Forest Supervisor, Lolo National Forest - National Park Service News Release of Justin's Line of Duty Death - National Park Service PIO Julie Thomas said Justin Beebe was killed while fighting the Strawberry Fire near Baker, Nevada. The incident is still under investigation, but what we believe happened was that they were in an area where lots of snags were falling, and we believe that a snag hit him. Every measure was taken to assist the firefighters to get him off the hill and bring him down for emergency treatment; unfortunately, we lost Justin Beebe due to the injuries he sustained in the fire. - US National Park Service: 24 Hour Report (46 K pdf) - US National Park Service: 72 Hour Report (120 K pdf) - Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center: Links to Strawberry Fire Tree Strrike Fatality (2016) files 4 / 10
