1 A program sponsored by: V I T A L H E A R T A N N U A L R E P O R T A word from the Program Administrator. This past year was a very challenging, productive, and yet rewarding year for Vital Heart. Probably one of the most important tasks was coming up with a solid Mission Statement for Vital Heart. This is important as it allows us to identify what we are about, and what we need to accomplish. The Mission Statement of Vital Heart is to beat sudden cardiac death in our communities by having better informed citizens. The next task was to identify how we will accomplish our Mission. We have determined that this can be done by engaging in three main activities. First, provide a focused public education program that will educate the public on the signs and symptoms of heart attack, stroke, sudden cardiac death, and the importance of calling 911 early. Second, if you work or live in our community, you will be trained in CPR or hands only compression CPR. And lastly, we will have a robust public access automated external defibrillator (AED) program. I would like to welcome the City of Blue Springs to Vital Heart. Our thanks goes out to Eric Johnson and the City Council for joining this important initiative. I am sure that you will agree that we have made great progress in 2013 and I anticipate that we will make even greater progress in Some of the highlights of 2013 include: Educated hundreds in CPR and hands only CPR. Worked with the school districts on student CPR education. Expanded our AED program. Financial sponsorship with the Medic One Foundation. Revised 911 call processing for potential cardiac arrest patients. These are just a few of our accomplishments in If you should have any questions please feel free to contact me. Mike Inside this report: MEET THE ADVISORY BOARD 1 Meet the Advisory Board The Vital Heart Advisory Board meets twice a year to discuss the business of Vital Heart and assists in the strategic planning of the program. The Board members are (from left to right) Mr. Aaron Ambrose, Mr. Mike Johnson, and Mr. Jeff Royer. Mr. Ambrose is the Chief of Police for the City of Grain Valley, MO. Mr. Johnson is a Grain Valley resident and is an Assistant Chief of the Sni-Valley Fire Protection District in Oak Grove, MO. Mr. Royer is a Blue Springs resident and is a practicing attorney in Blue Springs, MO. Vital Heart wishes to thank these individuals for their commitment and support for this program. 2 The Medic One Foundation For more information, visit For more than three decades, the Medic One Foundation (Seattle, WA) has provided the primary support for the research, paramedic training, and medical review behind the Medic One response system. In that time, Medic One's reputation for innovation and excellence in prehospital emergency care has grown worldwide, and thousands of survivors in the Puget Sound area have become living proof of a remarkable, focused vision. Fiscal sponsorship through the Medic One Foundation provides Vital Heart the opportunity to seek philanthropic support without establishing a new, tax-exempt nonprofit organization. Through the fiscal sponsorship, Vital Heart can solicit for charitable gifts and engage in grant writing activities for associated projects and activities. The Medic One Foundation has established and manages a separate restricted fund specifically for Vital Heart. The Vital Heart Fund provides a critical opportunity for local businesses, individuals, and organizations to invest in this very important program. We look forward to the support of the Medic One Foundation as we engage in fund raising activities. New Website and Social Media WE WILL NO LONGER SEARCH FOR PRODUCTS OR SERVICES..THEY WILL FIND US VIA SOCIAL MEDIA! SOCIAL MEDIA REVOLUTION 2013 We are pleased to have a majority of our website up and running. As compared to the old site, which we had little control over, the new site contains several new features to include a class calendar, a scrolling text box, an AED map, and other cool functions. Please take a few minutes and visit the website. It can be found at Vital Heart is now on Facebook and Twitter. The Facebook page has been kept up to date with stories, class information, and other announcements. Please visit it as well, LIKE it, and recommend it to your friends. As far as Twitter (cjcvitalheart) is concerned, I am the twit that Tweets. Don t expect anything fancy as I am still trying to figure out the hash tag stuff. As we all know, the use of social media is alive and well. In fact, social media reaches more people every day than all other methods. Vital Heart will certainly take advantage of this fact. 911 Rapid Triage for Cardiac Arrest Dispatcher Jon Yeager processing a call in the Communications Center. Evidence based medicine has shown that the two things that make a difference in survivability from cardiac arrest is early CPR and early defibrillation. Without doubt, the best way to ensure that CPR is being done prior to our arrival is to put that responsibility into the hands of the dispatchers. After reviewing call processing times, it was determined that it would take over two minutes, sometimes three before the dispatcher would begin CPR instructions over the phone. This was not acceptable. Modeling a program from Seattle, dispatchers now follow a new pathway to determine the possibility of a cardiac arrest patient. This allows the dispatcher to begin telephone instructions of CPR well under one minute. Page 2
3 2013 Year End Report 2013 By the Numbers 2013 was a busy year for Vital Heart. Here are some of the accomplishments by the numbers: Number trained in CPR= 596 (not including schools). Outreach Letters (Churches, Day Cares, Dentists, Physician Offices)=144 Presentations to local churches and other organizations=14 Education table at Wal- Mart, Patricia's, and Hyvee=4 National Night Outs=2 Other activities: Compression only demos at the Fall Fun Fest and Grain Valley Fair Days. Partnered with St. Mary's Hospital to provide Youth Athletic Screenings. Provided student and faculty CPR training for the Blue Springs and Grain Valley School Districts. Produced a Screenvision Ad for the local movie theatres featuring three of our cardiac arrest survivors. This can be viewed on the Vital Heart website in the media folder. Classes offered by Vital Heart Vital Heart offers the following classes to the public: Hands Only- Compression Only CPR Heartsaver CPR and AED Heartsaver First Aid Friends and Family CPR American Red Cross Baby Sitting Class Heartsaver CPR in the Schools Classes are held at the CJCFPD Training Center and periodically at the Grain Valley Community Center. The Hands Only or Compression Only training is free to the residents of Blue Springs and Grain Valley, Missouri. For more information please visit the Vital Heart website. We have fun! Memories from the year. Page 3
4 Goals for 2014! As you can see, 2013 was a good year for Vital Heart. With that said, 2014 is going to be even better! Here are some things we are going to focus on for 2014: Begin grant writing to fund free public education and AED funding. Identify and conduct fund raisers with the help of the Medic One Foundation. Purchase space in the City of Blue Springs and Grain Valley citizen magazines for public education. Expand the AED program to include identified priority target facilities. Maintain an AED registry and notification system. Monthly public events. Bring on board two citizen volunteers. Seek approval for a part time Vital Heart coordinator. Continue to work with the School Districts. Continue to have monthly community CPR classes in Blue Springs and Grain Valley. Continue to engage the public in free hands only CPR events. Investigate the feasibility of the Atrus AED registry. Sponsor a survivors reception that celebrates cardiac arrest, heart attack, and stroke survivors from our communities. Atrus National AED Registry and AED Link We know that the true secret to whether someone survives a sudden cardiac death is not how good the EMS system is, but rather how fast CPR can be performed and how quickly the person can be defibrillated. Vital Heart has a goal to have public access AEDs deployed in our communities. We are very fortunate to be well on our way. Today, we have AEDs deployed in 100% of our schools, police vehicles, and several churches and businesses in our communities. Despite where we have them already and where we hope to have them in the future, publicly available AEDs are rarely retrieved and used because bystanders can t see them and dispatchers are typically unaware they are nearby. In fact, public access AEDs are only used to help an estimated 5% of all SCA victims typically only when a device is clearly visible within about 50 feet of the victim s location. To address AED information challenges and to help make publicly placed AEDs more rapidly available and more frequently used, Vital Heart will be exploring the Atrus National AED Registry and AED Link information management systems. The Atrus National AED Registry (Registry) is the first and only national database resource specifically designed to help improve SCA survival rates by helping to rapidly link AEDs, AED users and SCA victims. The Registry serves as a repository of important data about AEDs and related AED program personnel and infrastructure, including information about: specting AEDs number ment location AED program site or whether they may be used both within an AED program site and at nearby offsite locations trodes Organizations that are registered in the National AED Registry receive a variety of free benefits. Examples include: registration requirements
5 We have no doubt that an AED registry is going to be critical to the success of our public access AED program. But I am not going to leave it at that. What if there were a notification system built into the program? Lets say that you are working in business A and you have an AED when a cardiac arrest occurs next door in business B that has no AED. At the same time EMS personnel are being dispatched, you receive notice that a cardiac arrest has been reported next door. You grab your AED and respond! Or even better, you are a city employee, lets say a water department employee. A cardiac arrest is reported in an area that you are close to. You grab your AED (hopefully in your city vehicle :)) and respond. Think of the power of that technology. Well it is here. AED Link is currently installed in 26 EMS systems serving over 250 municipalities in 6 States, one Canadian province and the Cayman Islands. Atrus developed the AED Link data management system to fill the AED information gap now faced by state and local public safety agencies. Very few dispatch agencies are able to include any information about the location of public access AEDs in their computer aided dispatch systems. Where such information is included, the location of AEDs is generally address-specific and not easily or automatically visible. AEDs located next door, across the street or on another floor remain invisible to systems. To address this challenge, the Atrus AED Link information management system offers mission-critical AED location data to dispatchers. AED Link can be added to any system without the need to make ANY direct connections to a Agencies CAD system. All that is required is that an additional phone number (pager or cell) be added to the agency s professional responder s call tree in exactly the same manner used to notify a professional responder of the nature and location of an event. The AED Link computer monitors the pager or cell phone and upon seeing the designated alert codes (ex 9-E-1) extracts the address of the event from the alert message and activates an independent monitor in the Center displaying the location of the incident and the nearest available AED s. Vital Heart is going to be working with Atrus and other stakeholders to determine how they can best meet our needs. Vital Heart 805 NE Jefferson Blue Springs, MO
