1 2012 ANNUAL REPORT Your Dive Safety Association MEDICAL : RESEARCH : EDUCATION : MEMBERSHIP : INSURANCE
2 In 2012 the DAN Education department completed extensive revisions of the four foundation first aid courses: Emergency Oxygen for Scuba Diving Injuries, Neurological Assessment, Basic Life Support: CPR and First Aid, and First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries. The new materials include large, full-color student manuals, Advanced Concepts and Bonus Content, as well as high-definition video to enhance students learning experiences. With the provision of DAN s Diver Medical Technician (DMT) and continuing medical education (CME) offerings in 2012, we reached out to the medical professionals who help keep divers safe. In addition to the two annual CME workshops for physicians, DAN supported local events at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut and the Wound Care Education Partners in Florida. DAN Research staff continued their study of diving injuries and fatalities. In 2012 a new online diving injury reporting system enhanced their efforts to determine the incidence of diving injuries, the defining characteristics of injured divers and the factors likely contributing to diving incidents. DAN research interns evaluated the efficacy of predive checklists in reducing the incidence of injuries, and staff continued their study of the risks and benefits of the closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) in divers. Cardiac incidients are often a trigger to diving incidents, so DAN Research staff looked for possible markers of increased risk for sudden cardiac death in diving and initiated a program of cardiac health studies. OUR MISSION: YOUR SAFETY Dear DAN members, supporters and friends: As our tagline says, DAN is your dive safety association. Our products and services are created and offered with safety in mind, whether it be medical information, training courses, research studies or our insurance programs. Wherever those of us associated with DAN go, we hear stories from divers about how DAN has been there for them, whether it be regarding a medical emergency, a source of information for a medical fitness-to-dive query, an insurance claim paid that saved the diver thousands of dollars or a training course that enabled someone to treat an injury or save another s life. Manning DAN s 24-hour emergency hotline and the Medical Information Line, DAN s Medical Information Services staff often are on the frontline of ensuring divers safety. If any diver experiences a diving incident and needs help, our medics are on call 24/7/365 to help. Or if a diver wonders if a medicine, symptom or medical condition may have an impact on his or her ability dive, our medics can answer those questions and make a referral to a physician who is familiar with dive medicine. In addition to phone and support, in 2012 our DAN Medical Information Services staff gave presentations at medical conferences, research meetings, local dive clubs and dive shows across the country. They also participated in virtual medic opportunities at various dive shows, answering questions via real-time video chat, and produced webinars, addressing specific topics by request. DAN was a primary organizer for Rebreather Forum 3, which brought together international experts and representatives of the technical diving community to discuss the major issues surrounding rebreather technology. The forum issued a variety of consensus statements relating to rebreather use. DAN values communication with its members. Alert Diver magazine continues to offer a selection of the industry s best writing and photography, keeping readers informed about safety- and research-related topics as well as travel destinations, photography tips and industry news each quarter. Electronic newsletters such as Safety Stop deliver timely news about DAN to each member s on a regular basis, while High Viz and Oxygen Window cater to our Industry Partners, instructors and trainers. DAN keeps current with social media, promoting engagement through resources such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, AlertDiver.com and Our staff attend events such as dive shows to extend a personal touch to our member interaction. As DAN continues to grow, we will remain focused on our mission: dive safety. Respectfully yours in safe diving, Joe Poe, Chairman DAN, Inc. Board of Directors 2 : 2012 ANNUAL Report 2012 ANNUAL Report : 3
3 In 2012, DAN Education staff oversaw the following: FIRST AID PROGRAMS 8,161 training courses completed By year-end 2012 DAN Education completed revisions for the 725 DAN Instructors certified foundation first aid courses: Emergency Oxygen for Scuba Diving Injuries, Neurological Assessment, Basic Life Support: CPR and First Aid, and First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive; both instructors and students have expressed enthusiasm for the revised programs. Completion of these four programs set the stage for revising the Diving Emergency Management Provider program, to be released in April The last two program revisions are under way, with completion expected in late spring or summer High-definition video plus clean and concise presentations for use with students in the classroom setting have enriched program content. These presentations will be formatted for online use in 2013, allowing students to learn the material at their pace and on their own schedule. Advanced Concepts and Bonus Content have enhanced the student handbooks, reaching out to individuals who want to know more than just the basic information. Larger and full-color student manuals create an inviting learning experience for today s course participants. Thanks to the financial support provided by membership dues, the purchase of insurance policies and generous donations, DAN continues to be a source of dive safety information and services. DAN provides care coordination and medical information to all divers through the Medical Information Services team and a wealth of information resources. DAN increased those resources in 2012 through the launch of newly revised training materials as well as through collaborative engagements with research institutions and physician experts. SHARING INFORMATION DAN is committed to providing information about dive safety, medicine and research through seminars, webinars, medical courses, Alert Diver magazine and the organization s website. In 2012, DAN staff provided more than 200 presentations at medical conferences, research meetings, courses, local dive clubs and industry shows and conducted more than 30 webinars. PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION DAN reached out to medical professionals by providing Diver Medical Technician (DMT) and continuing medical education (CME) courses. In 2012 Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) was added to the DMT continuing education courses, and, in addition to the two annual CME workshops, CME credits were offered to physicians who participated in a half-day program at Beneath the Sea or in collaborative programs at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut and the Wound Care Education Partners in Florida. A LOOK AHEAD In 2013 DAN will continue to enhance its training programs and research ways to effectively deliver education courses and materials to the consumer. DAN Education plans the launch of two more programs: CPR: Health-Care Provider with First Aid and Diving First Aid for Professional Divers. In addition, we will examine opportunities to support the medical community. Through our virtual medic program, DAN Medical Information Services staff enabled real-time videophone interface opportunities at four consumer dive shows across the U.S. ONLINE VIDEO LECTURES Following our launch of new online educational videos in 2011, DAN created a new line of videos in 2012 that are waiting for their debut. These include talks provided by our faculty at the Science of Hyperbaric Medicine, Diving and Wound Care Conference in August as well as popular talks by DAN staff. These 40-minute videos are a free resource provided by DAN to all divers and are being widely used as diveclub presentations and educational materials for instructors and medical personnel. A LOOK AHEAD DAN Medical Information Services will continue its focus of providing up-to-date information resources as we review and update our Medical Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on our website and answer nonemergency questions through our Medical Information Line. We also will go on the road attending In 2012, DAN Medical Information Services conferences and workshops and giving presentations at staff handled the following: dive shows and dive clubs. And, of course, in case of 4,382 calls to the DAN Emergency Hotline an emergency, we re always there when we re needed 5,923 calls to the Medical Information Line through our 24-hour emergency hotline. 2,758 inquiries via 4 : 2012 ANNUAL Report 2012 ANNUAL Report : 5
4 To support DAN s medical, educational and research activities that enhance dive safety, DAN collects membership dues and premiums from insurance products. Feedback from surveys and direct requests indicated that our members wanted an opportunity to have their travel investments protected. As a result, DAN insurance offerings expanded in 2012 to address those needs and protect divers and others with two new travel insurance plans. Annual Travel Insurance Developed in consultation with travel professionals and active travelers and launched in October 2012, the DAN Annual Travel Insurance program provides coverage for trip cancellation, medical and dental expenses with no deductibles, emergency evacuation, loss or delay of dive and recreational equipment and 24-hour travel consultation and assistance. For one flat fee, travelers are covered for all trips both diving and nondiving more than 100 miles away from home taken over a 12-month period. Group Travel Insurance In August 2012 DAN launched the Group Travel Insurance program. This plan allows tour organizers with 10 or more travelers the ability to purchase a group travel policy at a discounted rate and bundle it into their trip cost. It is the only group travel product on the market that can be purchased instantly online with no waiting period. The program targets liveaboards, dive shops and dive clubs as well as organizers of nondiving-related travel. Diving is safer today thanks to advances in diving technology and practice based on knowledge acquired through scientific research. DAN is one of rare entities dedicated to improving the understanding of diving-related hazards and addressing the needs of recreational divers. STUDYING INJURIES AND FATALITIES DAN Research promotes cooperation with academia and the diving industry in furthering our knowledge of diving hazards and safety. We are currently exploring the possible roles of microparticles, acclimatization, physical fitness and different breathing gases in decompression sickness. We seek to determine the incidence of diving injuries, the defining characteristics of injured divers and the factors likely contributing to diving incidents. Our efforts were enhanced with a new online diving injury reporting system, designed to focus on nonfatal events for which more complete information can be discovered. A Look Ahead In the first quarter of 2013 DAN unveiled a new, comprehensive watersports-accident insurance plan. The Guardian Plan, which offers higher coverage limits for divers and expanded nondiving benefits, will provide greater protection for DAN members who travel extensively and engage in a variety of in-water activities such as boating, sailing, waterskiing, surfing, wakeboarding and more. While the Guardian Plan currently is available in Canada, work is under way to get the plan approved to offer in all 50 U.S. states. STUDYING PROCEDURES AND PHYSIOLOGY Because use of checklists has been shown to improve safety, in 2012 DAN research interns evaluated the efficacy of predive checklists in reducing the incidence of injuries. This followed our ongoing study of the risks and benefits of the closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) in divers. Finally, we looked for possible markers of increased risk for sudden cardiac death in diving and initiated a program of cardiac health studies. REBREATHER FORUM 3.0 DAN partnered with AAUS and PADI to organize Rebreather Forum 3, which brought together international experts and representatives of the technical diving community. The event addressed the major issues surrounding rebreather technology. Videos of the presentations are available on the RF30.org website. RF3 endorsed the importance of a dive-safety culture, the use of predive checklists and the importance of contributing information to DAN s online diving injury reporting system. A LOOK AHEAD DAN Research will address health and fitness requirements for diving through a series of laboratory and field studies, including surveys of diving practices of divers with specific health conditions, evaluation of prevalence of cardiac risk factors among divers, effects of extreme dive exposure on divers health and use of scuba diving as occupational therapy in traumatic brain injuries. We will also continue to study mechanisms of decompression sickness and develop preventive interventions for diving injuries. In 2012, DAN Research staff had the following: 1,207 participants in studies 41 articles published and 6 : 2012 ANNUAL Report 2012 ANNUAL Report : 7 presentations given
