MBA CHEERLEADER TRYOUTS GENERAL INFORMATION I. TRYOUTS: A. Practice Sessions: Practice sessions will be held Tuesday, April 28 Thursday, April 30 in preparation for tryouts. Cheers, sidelines, jumps, and a dance routine will be taught to those trying out for the football or basketball squad. The tryout material for the wrestling squad will include all of the above except for jumps. Tryout material will be taught by a coach and senior cheerleaders. Attendance at the practice sessions is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended. If you are not in attendance, you must give a coach a written explanation of why you are unable to attend the practice. B. Squad Selection: Selection for the squads will be held on Friday, May 1 st beginning at 4:00 p.m. for basketball, football, and wrestling selection. Among the panel of judges will be former cheerleaders, qualified instructors, and MBA student officers. Because the cheerleaders work with the Big Red Spirit Club, there will be graduating members at the tryout. C. Criteria: Cheerleaders will be evaluated on projection, fundamental skills, and knowledge of tryout material. Although gymnastics/tumbling skills are not required for tryouts, this is a category that will be evaluated. D. Practice Attire: Attire for practice tryouts is shorts or skorts, t-shirts, socks and proper shoes. Please do NOT wear any jewelry (rings, necklaces, bracelets, etc). E. Tryout Attire: Attire for those trying out is black or navy blue shorts, white collared polo-type shirts, bow, socks, and tennis shoes. Please do NOT wear any jewelry (rings, necklaces, bracelets, etc). F. Results: Squads will be posted to the MBA cheerleading website: www.mbacheer.shutterfly.com password is stuart Results will be posted no later than Sunday, May 3 rd.

II. PERMISSION SLIPS: Permission slips are due by Wednesday, April 29. Please include a copy of the MBA athletic medical form (included in this handout as well as available on the MBA website under Athletics ) indicating that you are physically fit to try out for cheerleading. You will not be allowed to go through the selection process without these two forms. III. ELIGIBILITY and COMMITMENT: A. Eligibility Requirements: You are eligible to try out for an MBA squad if you are a student in good standing, both academically and in behavior, and who will be in the sophomore, junior or senior classes at Harpeth Hall or St. Cecilia Academy. B. Squads: The squads will consist of a 20 member squad for football, a 16 member squad for basketball, and a 12 member squad for wrestling. These numbers are subject to change. C. Camp: Camp is a requirement. If you are unable to make it to camp and the practices prior please do not tryout. Camp is a vital part of the season and we will need every member of the team there. If you tryout, you are saying you are available for these dates. More details below. D. Other Sports/Extra Curricular Activities: We love for our cheerleaders to be well rounded. However, please do not tryout if you are unable to be at the games and/or practices scheduled by your coaches. Schedule doctor visits outside of practice times. Please do not plan college visits that will conflict with practices or games. Cheerleaders will not be allowed to miss practice or games for the next season sports until the season is over. (i.e. If you cheer for basketball and we make it to state) You must be willing to make the commitment to the squad a priority in your schedule! E. Winterim: All out of town requests for the January Winterim/Interim period must be approved by the coach in advance. If you cheer for Basketball and leave for winterim, you will need to find a replacement for the games and practices you will miss. Your substitute must be preapproved and be able to fill in for you stunt position. (i.e. If you are a top girl, you will need a top girl to sub for you while away)

F. Time commitment: Attendance at all practices and games is required. Cheerleading takes precedence, and Points will be assigned for absences and lateness (see Penalties, below). You are expected to attend all practices, games and pep rallies. G. Penalties: Members who do not abide by the rules will be penalized as they affect the performance of the entire squad. A Points System is utilized to track penalties. Members who abuse the rules will be replaced or not allowed to try out in the future. If you are suspended from cheering a game, you are still required to attend the game in uniform. Failure to attend a suspension game will result in an additional suspension game. Please consider the schedule carefully BEFORE you try out. H. Quitting: Please take into consideration that trying out for an MBA cheerleading team indicates that you are making a commitment to participate for the year. If you decide to quit the squad at any point past the posting of the squad selection, you will not be allowed to try out for MBA cheerleading again. IV. CHEERLEADING CAMP: All cheerleaders will attend a mandatory training camp during the summer. We are planning to attend camp July 24-27. If you are unable to attend the camp, you should not try out! More information will be given regarding camp at the mandatory parents and squad meeting on May 11 th. This year we will attend UCA camp at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, July 24-27. We will leave MBA on July 24 th and stay in the dorms and leave camp July 27 th. There will be more details to come after tryouts. Practices before camp will be July 20 th - 23 rd. Times are TBA. Again, please do not tryout if you cannot make these dates. V. PRACTICES: In-season practices at MBA: (TBD) Practices will be determined by the coaches with help from the captains.

VI. ATTENDANCE AND ATTIRE AT PRACTICE AND GAMES: A. Practice attire: No jewelry, hair up in a pony tail, MBA practice shirt and shorts, dark sports bra, socks, cheerleading shoes. You must bring running shoes, bags, poms and water with you. You may not wear your school uniform to practice. Thursdays you are required to wear the team practice uniform. The same attire applies for games except that you will wear the correct uniform. Seniors on the football squad may wear their senior jackets during games, as long as all seniors wear them. B. Game attendance: Attendance is required at all regular season games and matches, as well as post season playoff games, and State Tournament games and matches -these may occur over Fall, Winter, and Spring Breaks. Family travel plans should be made accordingly. CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY AN AIRLINE TICKET! C. Absences: Absences may be reported to coaches only by leaving phone messages, or by e-mail. Notification to the Coaches must be made for doctor s appointments or if you are sick. If you do not notify the Coach, you will be assigned Points. You may not notify another team member or captain instead of the Coaches. D. Tardiness: Tardiness is unacceptable but is understandable. If you will be late because of traffic or because you were held up at school you must notify your coach. Otherwise will result in a point. VII. UNIFORMS: Uniforms will be issued by the school. They must be returned to the school in the condition they were received, or they must be replaced by the cheerleader. They must be washed before returned. If there is damage to the uniform you must repair them or you will be sent a bill. xc Shoes, socks, and practice clothing/camp wear must be purchased by the cheerleaders.

VII. COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH SEASON: Cheerleaders will be responsible for purchasing the following items: shoes, socks, two MBA practice skorts and tops, hair bows, bloomers, turtlenecks, sweatshirt, and bag. Not all these items are required for each squad. A Varsity representative will be available for the purchase of these items on May 11 from 3:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. A new cheerleader can expect their clothes purchase to be in the range roughly of $500, and a returning cheerleader should expect their fees to be around $200. These figures are dependent on what items the cheerleader selects to purchase. Camp fees will be approximately $364. It is MANDATORY to bring a check made out to MBA to the clothing order day to pay for both camp and clothing purchases. If you forget your check, you will need to go home to get it, or get someone to bring it to you.
