1 DHS CHEERLEADING TRYOUTS Thank you for showing interest in the Defiance Cheerleading Program. Cheerleading is fun but is also a lot of hard work and very time consuming! Unlike other sports that may last for a few months, football and basketball cheerleading is a year long commitment. We begin with our first practices in May and start up again in August and go straight through to next year s tryouts. Your cheerleader must be ready to give 110%. IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO KNOW BEFORE TRYOUTS: * Athlete may NOT participate in any other sport or be on any other team at the same time she is cheering. She may choose football/competition season, basketball/competition season, or both seasons. * ALL practices, games, and competitions are MANDATORY. * Football Season/Competition Season- May and summer practices are to prepare for any competitions and to prepare for the upcoming season. Once school starts MOST practices are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All games are on Mondays or Fridays. Competitions will be on Saturdays. * Basketball Season- Heavier schedule as games are 2 to 3 times a week on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. * Competitions Attendance at competitions will be discussed to see who can compete and location of the event. * Parents are asked to supply dinners/snacks/drinks for the squad on a rotating schedule by ABC order. *You need to have 4 core academic teachers complete the teacher evaluation forms. ***Please be aware of possible cheer purchases. (Last year s prices)** Hooded sweatshirt $16 Team t-shirt $10 Blue briefs $8 Yoga pants $20 Warmups $120?? Cheer shoes $45 School colored hair ribbons/bows & no show all-white socks Some of these items, the girls might already have AND if they cheer again, some of these items can be used for future cheer seasons. DO NOT LET ANY OF THE EXPENSES STOP YOU FROM TRYING OUT FOR CHEERLEADING. All items above, along with school issued uniforms and pom poms are used all year long and are a part of the cheer uniform. These things should not be worn at any other time than scheduled events. The cheerleading program will order all items in April and May of this school year and payment must be made at time of ordering. Good Luck at tryouts and looking forward to a great season. 3 SUMMARY OF DHS CHEERLEADING GUIDELINES: PURPOSE: To promote and uphold school spirit, to develop a sense of good sportsmanship among the students and adults within the entire school community, and to try to unify and involve the crowd during any athletic events. ELIGIBILITY: Academic eligibility is in accordance with OHSAA bylaws. Each cheerleader MUST maintain a 1.5 grade point average and passed 5 classes in prior 9-weeks. This is checked at the end of each 9-week grading period. Each cheerleader MUST have a physical on file in the Athletic Director s office prior to the first practice. An emergency medical form MUST also be turned in to the coach prior to the first official practice. DEFIANCE CITY SCHOOLS ATHLETIC DISCIPLINE POLICY: Cheerleaders MUST abide by the Board-approved discipline policy for studentathletes. A copy of this policy has been provided in this packet of information. Please review it carefully and contact the school with any questions or concerns. PRACTICE AND ACTIVITIES: Practice time is very important. It will be used to improve skills and not as a social time. All dental/doctor appointments should be arranged around practice and game times. Other outside activities should not conflict with practices or games. ALL cheerleaders must attend ALL scheduled games/practices/activities unless previously approved by the coach. Parents MUST call or send a note prior to the missed event as to the reason for the absence. The absence will only be excused if it is in accordance with the school handbook attendance policy. Some excused absences include death in family, personal illness, or religious observances. Any cheerleader with an unexcused absence from a cheer activity will result in sitting out the upcoming game. *First offense: sit out ½ of next game *Second offense: sit out all of the next game *Third offense: possible removal from the squad DRESS CODE: Proper attire is required at all practices and games. The school issued uniform should be kept clean and well taken care of during the season. Shoes should be clean. Jewelry is NOT to be worn. Hair should be kept out of the face both at games and practices. Make-up and nail colors should be kept to a minimum. No gum chewing when in uniform or at practices. Cell phones are to be used before or after games and practices. Cell phones should be turned off at all cheer events. 3

THEN, we will begin the individual try-outs in number order for jumps, stunt and individual chant. No names will be used on the day of try-outs as you will be identified by a number to judges. Be sure to practice on your own & good luck! THE COACHES KNOW THAT MANY OF YOU MAY HAVE CONFLICTS WITH A SPRING SPORT OR THE NIGHT OF THE ARTS. Your group then needs to make up a chant to do for the judges before or after your cheer or dance. Be creative using ripples and levels. Have fun! 4
5 BULLDOG TRYOUTS---Thursday, March 21 st Mascot Try-out Requirements: A mascot s job is to entertain and perform in front of the crowd. Plus, they also add to the group of cheerleaders that they work with to enhance their crowd performance. The DHS Mascot s responsibilities also include making public appearances at other school activities and community events. This will be discussed after tryouts with those that have been selected to fill these BIG shoes! *Attire for try-outs: t-shirts, shorts, socks & comfortable tennis shoes *On your own, you will be required to: -Perform a skit 3-5 minutes long. You will be wearing the Bulldog costume when performing in front of the judges. This skit should relate to football or basketball NOT a dance routine. -All skits must include props (minimum of 2, maximum of 5). Music may be used for part, but not all, of the performance. Please have the music ready and timed correctly. *ALSO perform with one cheerleading tryout group to show the judges how you work with a group in adding to the performance of the group. *Your performances will be judged on your creativity & enthusiasm! Remember you will be performing nightly in front of crowds of people---for try-outs you will perform for judges! *The judges will also give you a scenario and ask you to react as the mascot. For example, someone just intercepted the ball or we scored a touchdown. What would you do?? BE CREATIVE with your ideas and HAVE FUN! 5

Since attitude and personality are important to a cheerleading squad and the coaches, I need your help! Please circle a rating for the student in the following areas and consider each individual category carefully. Please rate them between a 1 (low) and a 5 (high). The completed and totaled teacher evaluations are very important to the overall score of each candidate and could make a difference in squad selection.
