JULY 2017 NEWS & NOTES HEADLINES FROM JULY PLAYER OF THE MONTH Nick Gotovac 2017 Presidents Cup The Presidents Cup is almost complete! We started with 44 players (12 play in rounds) and four flights. The A flight was won by none other than your newsletter author, Chris Rasmussen. Chris s secret to success is quite simple; he plays from the left side! B flight is down to Scot Bradbury and Adam Rho. Scot had a tight match on Mesa Linda against lefty Shad Danner and Adam Rho defeated former club president Mike Murphy in extra holes. C flight has Jeff Rickey advancing to the final flight round with a 3 down come from behind victory over the final four holes. Jeff is waiting for the winner of the Michael Kane / Mike Dunn match which will hopefully be completed real soon. D flight pairs Corvette enthusiast George Yablonsky against Ron Alwin. The flight winners will square off against one another (A flight winner against B flight winner / C vs D flight winner) using their full handicaps. Only one will be crowned the President s Cup champion and with that riches beyond their wildest dreams (slight exaggeration).

Costa Mesa Senior Club Championship Tournament Highlights July brought the senior club championship to Costa Mesa. This two-day tournament was played on both courses with 2 flights battling it out for over 50 supremacy. A Flight Gross Winner: Dave Anderson 74 76 = +8 Dave etched a two-shot victory over Jim Barr and Ted White. Dave s hot short game and putts from way down town helped lead him to the A flight gross championship. Nice work Dave. B Flight Gross Winner: Nick Gotovac 81-85 = 166 total Nick locked up a two-stroke victory over Daniel Ernst. Nick had many great iron shots including hitting one to two feet on Los Logos #15 for a kick in birdie (he putted it in) that sealed the deal. Nice job Nick, you have been selected as the golfer of the month! A Flight Net Winner: John Collister Net 64 / 73 = -5 Mr. Collister enjoyed a one stroke victory over David Duner and Larry Green. John jumped out of the gate early on Mesa Linda with seven net birdies and a net eagle. His net 64 was the low net score of the tournament. It s very difficult at any level to follow up a great round the next day; John persevered and hung on Sunday just long enough to earn the victory. Way to go Johnny. B Flight Net Winner: Carl Murray / David Yee / Sabbir (Sabi) Dadabhai Net 69 / 71 = - 2 Very consistent play from all three of these guys in route to their tie for 1 st place. My question is where was the playoff? Nice job guys well played! NEXT TOURNAMENT: ASSOCIATES DAY, SATURDAY AUGUST 12TH This is a one-day event open to all regular and associate members contested on Los Logos. Entry Fee: $85/player Tournament Format Flighted low gross / low net, closest to the pin and for the first time beat the pro! If your net score beats the gross score of our selected pro for the day you win! A signup announcement through golf genius will come to your Inbox very soon! If you have any questions contact Chris Rasmussen. Rules of Golf What happens if my ball accidently hits me or my clubs? In a recent club event current club president, Jeff Rickey, found himself in a precarious position behind the 16 th green of Los Logos. His ball was perched right in front of three mini palm trees halfway between the 16 th green and 17 th tee box. The only play Jeff had would be to play the ball out sideways left handed. Summing his inner Roy McAvoy from Tin Cup Jeff decides to use the old ricochet shot. His intent: face the palm tree and strike his ball in such a way that it would ricochet against the palm tree and carrom onto the green for the most unbelievable par in recorded history. As I m watching this unfold something tells me I should be reaching for my iphone camera, but I am too in awe of what s about to happen to move. Keep in mind that these palm trees aren t far from the
green so I m thinking Jeff s going to take a little chip shot swing. Oh no Jeff goes for it all taking a three-quarter swing, striking the ball cleanly, hitting the palm tree perfectly in the middle. The ball carroms off the tree and is heading back towards the green but there s one problem, Jeff s head is in the way. In a moment that can only be reminiscent of an Ali / Frazer fight, the ball gives Jeff a left cross in his right temple! Down goes Frazer! Down goes Frazer! We gave Jeff the concussion protocol test and he passed; however, he can t come within 100 feet of a palm tree without cringing. Now Jeff was ok but his score was adversely affected by his actions. Why? Rule 19-2 states: 19-2. By Player, Partner, Caddie or Equipment If a player's ball is accidentally deflected or stopped by himself, his partner or either of their caddies or equipment, the player incurs a penalty of one stroke. The ball must be played as it lies, except when it comes to rest in or on the player's, his partner's or either of their caddies' clothes or equipment, in which case the ball must through the green or in a hazard be dropped, or on the putting green be placed, as near as possible to the spot directly under the place where the ball came to rest in or on the article, but not nearer the hole. So not only did Jeff end up with a huge migraine but also a one stroke penalty and a story he can tell in the bar for years to come.. Quote of the month Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle." Author Unknown SWEEPS NEWS Five sweeps events were held in July.
