Pennant Hills Bowling Club Newsletter 37, 27 April 2017 News from the Men s Club What happened? Men s Singles Championship Sponsored by John and Bev Archer Quarter finals were completed in fabulous conditions. Congratulations to the winners and good luck in the next round. Thanks also to the markers and our umpire. Voytek Lasek 31 v Matt George 17 Jim Brown 27 v Kel Sullivan 31 Frank Jones 23 v Gary Havron 31 John Archer 31 v Mark Kakoschke 24 Match reports Voytek v. Matt What a way to start this report with two of our youngest and least experienced players going head to head in a quarter final of the club s Major Singles Championship. The match was a very tight game for the first 12 ends, seeing Matt leading 8-7, however, Voytek with some very good and consistent bowling, went on to win 8 of the next 9 ends reaching 23-10. The rest of the match was close with Matt trying to close the gap but Voytek held out to win 31-17. Gary v. Frank Another good match to watch, with neither player getting away to a big lead. After 21 ends there were only two points in it, Gary leading 18-16. Gary then won 6 of the next 7 ends to lead 28-18 and after a rally from Frank, Gary closed out the match 31-23.

John v. Mark This match lived up to expectations with two of the club s leading bowlers in action. Club stalwart John Archer was up against two-time champion Mark (crackers) Kakoschke, and while the result may have been by 7 shots, it did not reflect how close the match really was. If Mark put down a great bowl, John would put down a better one, and vice versa. There were a number of very close ends with the tape used frequently. John ran out to be the winner picking up 18 of the 32 ends. Kel v. Jim Another match living up all to expectations, with another pair of leading bowlers going head to head. This match started with the score close for 15 ends with Jim leading 12-11. Kel then went on a bit of a surge picking up 10 shots over the next 5 ends to lead 21-12, but not to be outdone, Jim rallied and clawed his way back into the match with a number of great pressure bowls to trail only 27-29 after 35 ends. On the 36 th though, Kel put down two excellent bowls, allowing him to close out the match. Many thanks to Ralph for this report. Easter carnival A wonderful day with two greens-full of happy players. Some big margins for the winners, and pity, if you must, those who had close, exciting games. ANZAC Day carnival An excellent turn out of about fifty men and women for this commemorative event. A sombre day ruled by rain that let us play only nine ends or so before the formalities were held indoors. Thank you to the Women s Club for supporting this event.

What s coming up? Men s Singles Championship Sponsored by John and Bev Archer If you thought the quarter-finals were good, you should come along and see the semi-finals next Sunday 30 April from 12.30. The players will really appreciate your support. Voytek Lasek v Kell Sullivan Gary Havron v John Archer Remember also that the Minor Singles final will be held on the same day as the Major s final Men s Major Pairs Entries close Friday 12 May and the entry sheet is on the notice board. This is one of the major events on our calendar, and you are encouraged to grab a partner and do-si-do; the more teams, the better this event will be. Remember, it s not always about winning the event, but about the experience and enjoyment of playing against players of different ability. A match is not always won by the expected team and it only takes one good bowl to win an end. Bowls on TV The Bowls Show s second season will return to SBS on Sunday, May 14, in the new time-slot of 3.00pm. 2018 Pennants Just so you can buzz off interstate to see some international bowls, next year s Pennants will start later than usual following the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. First round will be on 28 April. Plenty of time to organise tickets and accommodation! Shall we get a group together Voytek? Rookies Singles and Pairs The Bowls NSW Rookies is open to players who have been playing bowls for less than 30 months. To be eligible to enter you must not have been a bowler with any club (anywhere in the world) before 1 April 2015. Also you can only play in the Rookies twice anyone who played in both the 2015 and 2016 Rookies is ineligible to enter in 2017. In both singles and pairs, the initial stage of play will be round robin in sections at local venues Singles Sat 12 & Sun 13 August Pairs - Sat 26 & Sun 27 August Entries Close Friday 21 July. Ask a committee member for details.

Challenge Cup On Friday 19th May 2017 we are playing West Pennant Hills in the 5th Annual Challenge Cup. We are the current holders and would really like to defend this trophy. So far the winner of each of the past events has been the home team but we would like to change this in 2017. It is an afternoon game of 3 bowl triples which starts at 12.30 pm. The cost is only $10 for green fees and you need to wear your uniform. An entry form will be on the notice board from Wednesday 26/4/2017 with any other information. We need at least 30 bowlers to make up the 10 teams and a few reserves would also be very helpful. Please consider supporting your club for this event. If you have any questions please contact the Match Committee. Kind Regards Ralph, Terry and Warren PHMBC Match Committee News from the Women s Club What a wonderful game to watch was our Grade 1 A and B competing on Tuesday April 18. It was a make-up game as it had been washed out earlier in the season and was the last game in the Grade 1 competition. Teams resumed play on the 4 th end with one side already ahead by 7 shots. Both teams gave their all and the scores were neck and neck at the end. Grade 1B finally emerged as the winners by 1 shot. The players are to be congratulated for their sporting attitude to the game. Unfortunately for our club, Asquith have been declared the winners of Grade 1 and for this we congratulate them. Maybe it will be our turn again next year!

Grade 1A and B players relaxing after the game The Easter Monday carnival was a great success with 48 players. Thank you to the men s club for their support of this event. We had beautiful weather, good food, some skill and great friendship. Thank you to White Lady Funerals for their sponsorship of the day. Ladies, you probably haven t noticed, but on the men s board is an advertisement for a bowls coordinator. The men s and women s club are looking for someone to take the role of bowls coordinator for the club. All members are invited to apply. It is very much a part time position; there are no set hours it all depends on what needs organizing. The successful applicant will be expected to develop barefoot/corporate bowls and attend for 1 hour of each session; encourage recruitment etc. and will be paid $25 per hour. If you are interested, please check out all the details on the men s board. And more to our pennant results - Thursday April 20 saw two matches played at home. Grade 2 played Asquith A s and had a convincing win 56-40, coming away with 4 points. Grade 3 played Beecroft and in a close game, had a narrow defeat 36-41, earning 1 point. Grade 4 played away from home at West Pennant Hills and came away with a win for 5 points. Great bowls were played in all games.
