SAILING ASSOCIATION OF MARCO ISLAND P. O. BOX 61, MARCO ISLAND, FL 34146 www.samisailor.org May 2017 COMMODORE S CABIN Ken Bardon, Commodore ADVICE FROM THE VICE Micki Gobeil, Vice Commodore As the season winds down, the activity with the group has continued to be really good. As I am writing this, I am very much looking forward to this weekend on the Sanibel cruise. We are expecting over twenty members to join in the camaraderie Saturday night, a combination of those sailing up and those driving for the event. We do need some assistance on the bridge. We are in desperate need of a webmaster to keep the site up to date. Also, we are looking to fill spots on the bridge for next year, including Commodore. I will bring these issues up at the next membership meeting to see who may be interested in participating. Please feel free to call or email me if you have any questions regarding these positions. I certainly wish all of the snowbirds, which includes Lil and me, a wonderful summer, and I look forward to seeing all of you this fall for a fabulous next season. In This Issue. Having been born and raised on a working horse/ cattle ranch in central Florida, this race has always been so special to me. SAMI just sponsored the Bud Light Regatta and, with the Ladies Day Regatta coming up on May 6 th, I thought it would be fun to combine Horse Racing and Sailboat Racing events and have RACING be the Theme/ Topic for the May 11th SAMI Monthly Membership Meeting. Jeff Comeaux, Rear Commodore of MIYC will be our Special Guest Speaker. He has put together an Audio/Visual presentation of the "Chicago to Mackinac Island Race". I have heard from those who have already attended Jeff's presentation that "It was spellbinding", "A Real Cliff Hanger", "SPECTACULAR", "UNFORGETTABLE". With all of this being said, I for sure do not want to miss this special presentation and I hope you feel the same. Cuisine will be Kentucky Derby Bourbon Dishes to include: Bourbon meat balls, Bourbon chicken, Bourbon pulled pork, Bourbon shrimp; Kentucky style cheddar cheese biscuits. Sides will include: vegetable casseroles and salads. Desserts will include: Bourbon Brownies, Bourbon Pecan Pie and Bourbon Balls. Mint Julip's (to taste only) will also be available. Go online to get Kentucky Derby Food suggestions and special recipes. Since this will be our last SAMI Monthly Membership/Dinner Meeting until October, let's make this a NIGHT TO REMEMBER! Derby style hats, skirts and dresses are fun to wear for this SPECIAL event, but are OPTIONAL! If you need a hat, skirt or dress (size 8), call me; I have a pretty big selection from over the years of celebrating the Kentucky Derby. RSVP as soon as possible at 642-4241 or mickigo@embarqmail.com to sign up for the dish you plan to make. Thank you in advance for your immediate response, continued interest and support of SAMI.
CRUISIN ABOUT Peter Coggins, Rear Commodore AROUND THE BUOYS Rob Reiley, Fleet Captain We all are in for a real treat at our SAMI Membership/Dinner Meeting at the Isles of Capri Community Center on Thu 11 May! Jeff Comeaux, the MIYC Rear Commodore, will be presenting a VERY professional slide and video account of a very dramatic Chicago- Mackinac Island Race. For those who don t know Jeff, he has sailed, quite successfully I might add, an amazing 26 Chicago-Mac races! Even with my extensive off-shore racing and cruising I found myself on the edge of my chair, amazed with what went on during this particular race. Lake Michigan may be fresh water, but it is HUGE, and being so, can go from flat calm to gale winds with destructive 15-20 ft waves in a couple of hours. So I challenge you to come to the meeting on the 11 th and transplant yourself onboard with Jeff and be prepared to witness something that cruisers don t ever get to experience thank God. To get an early preview of the Chicago-Mac Race venue go to this link: http://www.geographic.org/ nautical_charts/13_lake_michigan/14901_1_lake_michigan. html Next month we will be reporting on our Sanibel Island Cruise that we hosted on 28-30 April. The weather has been forecasted to be perfect and our attendance indications are growing. This venue is so very special and unique. Wendy and I are thrilled to have been invited to be on board LADY M with Micki and Gilles. Wendy and I are also excited with our decision to sail our Tartan-34C FROLIC down to Marco from Rumson, NJ this coming September. I have a great crew all lined up and will have a report with slides and narrative ready for you this fall. Having the boat here will allow us to enjoy 7 months of sailing vs. a mere 3 months and we will really be able to be a supporting part of our SAMI Cruising Fleet and perhaps do some racing, too <grin>. We sincerely wish you all a most pleasant summer as we prepare to drive home the end of May. 2 The Bud Light Regatta turned out to be a great weekend with lots of camaraderie and good racing. The Competitors Meeting on Friday was well attended and the pool deck at the Marco Island Marina was an excellent venue. Everyone enjoyed the free Bud Light and a few laughs. Saturday s weather did not disappoint the 14 boats that turned out to race. The winds were favorable and we were able to complete 4 races. That evening the MIYC did an excellent job hosting the "Margarita Themed" party. Music was provided by Steve Reynolds. The event was well attended by both racers and club members. Sunday again provided nice winds and we were able to complete a 15 mile pursuit race off of the Marco beach. The Old Marco Lodge was a gracious host for our Awards Ceremony that evening, allowing us to serve our free Bud Light. We dined off the menu and the service was excellent. SAMI, with help from our sponsor Bud Light (Coastal Beverage), made donations to the Civil Air Patrol, MICSC, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. What an enjoyable way to end a fun filled weekend! SAMI s Ladies Day Race was scheduled for April 22 but the weather didn t cooperate; this event is rescheduled for May 6. Please contact me or Micki for further details. SAMI s Annual Bud Light Regatta April 8-9, 2017 Jae Kellogg, SAMI Publicity Chairperson SAMI s Annual Bud Light Regatta was a weekend of great sailboat racing! It all started Friday evening with a well-attended Captains/ Competitors Meeting - on the pool deck of the Marco Island Marina. The guests all enjoyed complimentary Bud Light from Coastal Beverage, delicious snacks provided by SAMI, and a good dose of sailing camaraderie! Saturday, fair winds and blue skies enabled this very aggressive SW Florida Boat of the Year event to compete in 4 races held in the vicinity of Residents Beach on Marco Island! Out of 14 boats, the first place Spinnaker Boat was T-Bone skippered by Jason Richards; Brian Lawton, aboard Blue Heron, took first place in the True Cruising category! Saturday evening - Thank You - to the Marco Island Yacht Club for hosting a fun-filled "Margarita Themed party - Chef Bob did his usual flair with a Mexican Buffett and Steve Reynolds provided the music - all was enjoyed by everyone! Sunday brought beautiful sailing weather again to our Marco Island Paradise as the boats completed a 15 mile race along the Marco beach! Brian Lawton, Blue Heron, again took the honors in this event! The Old Marco Lodge deck in Goodland was the Sunday evening setting for the featured Awards Ceremony! Thanks to the generosity of our sponsor, Bud Light (Coastal Beverage, Inc.), we were able to give a generous donation to the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), commanded by Major Bob Corriveau! Moonbeam, crewed by all CAP members and captained by Ken Bardon, Commodore of SAMI, represented the CAP in the races. We are proud that the Marco Island Community Sailing Center (MICSC) and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Marco Island were also donation recipients of the weekend festivities! This year s Bud Light Regatta will long be remembered as one filled with the most enthusiastic group of sailors coming together to compete in this year s racing event! Due to the great Bridge in SAMI s organization - along with the Marco Island Yacht Club - the weekend made great memories for all of those involved! All sailors and boaters - Come and join us next year and let s double the number of participants for more sailing/racing FUN! 4
