1 SAILING ASSOCIATION OF MARCO COMMODORE S CABIN Micki Gobeil, Commodore ADVICE FROM THE VICE Peter Coggins, Vice Commodore SPRING is officially here and SAMI is off to the RACES! April 6-7 the regattas will begin with the Bud Light Regatta, sponsored by SAMI since Sailing Clubs come from all around to participate in this fun and exciting event and this year we are hoping to see more SAMI Members attend. May 9th SAMI Members and guests will celebrate the Kentucky Derby with a Traditional Kentucky Derby Style Dinner laced with what else? Kentucky Bourbon. So ladies dig out your favorite recipes and come dressed to PARTY HAR- DY! Uber will be on stand by. Guests are always welcome. With the May 9th SAMI Membership Meeting, meetings will officially be over until the fall. However, we will still be active socially with the Picnic in June, the 4th of July Boat parade, Pizza Night Out at Davide's in August and SAMI'S BIG 50th Birthday Party Celebration in September at the MIYC. So mark your calendars early and plan to attend these events. Let's all continue to work together to build our sailing club and as Steve Colgate said, "Do what we can to keep Sailing alive". On a personal note, I want to thank you all for your prayers for me and my loved ones over the past 3 months. It has been a dark and painful time and I am so grateful for your understanding and support. God Bless. A very dear friend (Bill Dolan) from our yacht club up in NJ (SSYC), who now lives up in Placida FL, has a Catalina-36. He asked us to join him on board for a 4-day cruise. We started at Port Charlotte and sailed (! really!) down Charlotte Harbor and over to Cayo Costa for the night. After breakfast and some exploring of the anchorage we motor-sailed down the ICW to Estero (Ft Myers Beach) and were "introduced" to the "Miserable Mile" enroute. The next morning we took on some fuel and then went outside around Sanibel and up to the Boca Grande Pass --- back to Cayo Costa. Midmorning we went across the Boca Grande Pass and up to Boca Grande Harbor and had brunch with Bill's wife, whom we had not met. The sail back home to Port Charlotte was absolutely perfect. The weather was pleasantly warm, and we had a solid kt breeze for our reach all the way... we were constantly pushing 7 kts. Wendy had lots of helm-time and was 'grinning' all the time. It was so nice to be able to get a full tour of the Harbor and learn about all the shoal areas that stick out and how best to avoid them. I am sure that you will meet Bill soon as he is a devoted cruiser and is willing to sail almost anywhere. Just thought that I would like to share this cruise with you all... Also in this Issue. 2 AROUND THE BUOYS Rob Reiley, Fleet Captain On pages 5-6 of this issue of SAMI Sez, you will find the Notice of Race and an Entry Form for the SAMI BUD LIGHT REGATTA that contain information about the Awards Ceremony, which, by the way is also the SAMI monthly meeting... a short, to-the-point meeting. The Awards Ceremony is at Paradise Found (formerly The Old Marco Lodge ) in Goodland. They will be hosting us outside in a semi-private area on the deck where there will be music and FREE Bud Light. A cash bar will be available for other drinks (tip and taxes included). Meals may be ordered on site for $14.00 each, including tip and taxes. The menu choices are a Paradise Found Burger, Classic Reuben, Fried Oyster or Shrimp Po Boy, or a Grilled or Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich. These sandwiches come with a choice of rice pilaf, black beans and rice, or a baked potato very respectable meals! The new restaurant ownership and management are trying to establish a good reputation. It should be a great fun-filled afternoon. Marilyn and her husband, Bob, were SAMI members many years ago who moved on to Spokane, WA. No further details were available.
