1 SAILING ASSOCIATION OF MARCO ISLAND P. O. BOX 61, MARCO ISLAND, FL May 2016 COMMODORE S CABIN Ken Bardon, Commodore ADVICE FROM THE VICE Phil Litow, Vice Commodore April has been an exciting month, highlighted by the Bud Light Regatta. Although there were a few drop outs due to a combination of rough seas and tidal issues at the planned start time, the race finally got going at 12:30. The awards dinner at the Old Marco Lodge was very well attended by members of SAMI, the racers and members of the Civil Air Patrol who received a nice contribution from Bud Light. Special kudos should go to Rob Reiley for his organizational skills and the other members of the committee, Dave Walsh, Ed Crane and Phil Litow. Also thanks to Dave Dumas for being the PRO. On the not so great side in April, there were very few SAMI boats that signed up for the regatta that we hosted. Also, the April cruise to Naples was cancelled due to lack of participation. I know that the slow summer season is coming up, but hopefully in the fall, when the snowbirds begin returning, we can elicit greater participation in all of our events. We have a dedicated bridge that is working very hard to insure the continuance of our organization and also make our events fun and interesting. We also welcome any suggestions and/or ideas for events, ie. new places to cruise to, new venues for our monthly meetings, etc. April was a big month for Sami with a cruise to Ft.Myers, which Micki will talk about, and, of course, the Bud Light regatta which we sponsor. In spite of high winds and low tides, which prevented or deterred several boats from racing and caused the mark boats to leave because of the 4' seas, the race took off a couple of hours late and used permanent government markers instead of having the mark boats set markers. It was a great, flexible adaptation by PRO Dave Dumas and the race committee. The late start resulted in only one race being run. The sailing itself was wonderful and all those who entered had a great time. The awards dinner at the Old Marco Lodge was a huge success. We drank and ate (and drank) on the deck in picture perfect weather. About 55 attended and enjoyed the camaraderie and good food. Special kudos should go a few people who made the day a success: Rob Reiley who organized and ran a smooth-running event; PRO Dave Dumas who not only had to make several difficult in-the- game decisions but he and his crew bobbed up and down all day in unpleasant conditions; and Dave Walsh whose charm and powers of persuasion secured for us the venue for the terrific finale. Looking forward to May there will be the Bone Island Regatta on the 12th-13th and the return race to Naples on the 15th-16th. Our monthly meeting will be on the 19th and the featured speaker will discuss the relatively new AIS navigation/communication system. This will be a traditional potluck, so bring your favorite dish (appetizer, salad/side dish, entrée or dessert) to share! I hope to see you all there. capnlit@yahoo.com or
2 CRUISIN ABOUT Micki Gobeil, Rear Commodore Ft. Myers Beach Cruisers Appreciation Day April 2, 2016 One SAMI boat, RHAPSODY, and six SAMI members, Rocky and Mary Lee Cale, Ken and Lil Bardon, and Gilles and myself attended the recent cruise to Fort Myers Beach for their 9th Annual CRUISER'S APPRECIATION DAY CELEBRATION. They really know how to make the cruisers feel welcome! Unfortunately, the April RAFT-UP in CHAMPNEY BAY, Naples, was cancelled due to lack of participation. The next 3 day cruise to SANIBEL ISLAND (Sanibel Marina) has been rescheduled for May due to members wanting to be home to celebrate MOTHER'S DAY and/or KENTUCKY DERBY DAY with family and friends. We are so pleased to note our SAMI MEMBERSHIP is rapidly growing, with now 78 members and 40 boats in the club. With this many sailing enthusiasts on board, we hope to see more members setting sail on the cruises in the near future. The spring weather has been so incredibly beautiful with just enough wind to billow the sails, and cool tropical night breezes that makes you just want to chill out and cuddle up on board. PLEASE RSVP ASAP if you plan to set sail for the SANIBEL CRUISE at or me at mickigo@embarqmail.com. Additional details will be forthcoming. In the future, we hope to see more active involvement of our members in CRUISING and CLUB ACTIVITIES. Your suggestions and feedback are important to us and we encourage you to share your input with us at the next SAMI meeting and/or by . Ft. 3 SAMI s Annual Bud Light Regatta April 9, 2016 Frank Brown Frank Brown Frank Brown HIGH WINDS AND SEAS MAKE FOR A CHALLENGING BUD LIGHT REGATTA By Dave Walsh The Annual Sailing Association of Marco Island (SAMI) Bud Light Regatta got off to an exhilarating start on April 9 after a postponement due to high winds and waves. With small craft advisories in effect due to the knot winds (12-23 mph) and 4'-7' waves, some skippers elected to stay at the dock. Others went out to test the waters but ended up turning around and heading back to port after seeing that the seas were as forecast. The same fate met the 'mark boats', the smaller power boats that place the turning buoys. Even though they were manned by seasoned sailors, the crews had all they could do just to hang on to the boat with both hands. Since the winds and waves would drag the marks anyway, it was decided to retire the mark boats and alter the race course. Initially the course was set to be halfway between Gordon Pass and Capri Pass, but was moved to Marco Island, using the Government marks at Capri Pass and Caxambas Pass to define the course. Dave Dumas was the Principal Race Officer aboard Grand Pelican, a Grand Banks 40' trawler which served as Committee Boat. He said, "The problem is we have high wind and waves coming from the Northeast, and large swells that have been building up in the Northwest Gulf of Mexico for the last several days. When the two systems collide, you have a big mess." "It was just like a calm day in the North Atlantic," Captain Ken Bardon stated. His boat Moonbeam, a 52' Island Packet was crewed by Marco Island Civil Air Patrol (CAP) pilots. Bardon, a CAP pilot and Commodore of SAMI missed the last three Bud Light Regattas because he was busy circumnavigating the world. Ed and Lois Dixon on Tri Power, a Corsair 27 Trimaran, were the first to cross the finish line and were urging the Race Committee to get the next race started. Weather was not an issue for their crew since getting wet on TriPower was the norm, no matter what the weather conditions. In spite of what some would call unfavorable conditions, two separate fleets started and managed to complete the race. The awards banquet at The Old Marco Lodge in Goodland was well attended, not only by the racers, but also by the many other volunteers behind the scenes required to conduct a large regatta. Rob Reiley, the Race Chairman, presented a check for $1000 from Coastal Beverage, the sponsor of The Bud Light Regatta, to the Marco Island Civil Air Patrol. Accepting the donation for the Civil Air Patrol was the Marco Island Commander, Major Bob Corriveau, who also raced on Moonbeam. The Civil Air Patrol serves a valuable service to the community with their Sundown Patrols, patrolling the local waterways looking for boaters in distress. At the awards banquet, pennants were presented to the following boats: Spinnaker Fleet: 1 st TriPower (Dixon) True Cruising Fleet: 1 st Dragon Fly Plus (Rohde) 2 nd Foreign Exchange (Rogat) 2 nd Sundance (Evans) 3 rd Vagabond (Spence) 3 rd Moonbeam (Bardon)
