2 GCSC Cruising and Day Sailing Programs Fleet Captain Cruising Bob Diamond January Cruising Review. A day with rough seas and high winds was a perfect day to leave our boats tied up at the dock and enjoying our first ever Inter-Club Drive To Only Day Sail. CJs at the Esplanade Marina on Marco Island hosted about 25 Day sailors from Gulf Coast Sailing Club, Sailing Association of Marco Island, Marco Island Yacht Club and the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club. Once a group of sailors start talking about boats, there is no stopping them. To say that everyone had a good time would be an understatement. Our second January inter-club event was our Cruise to Panther Key. Panther Key is about 24 NM south from the entrance to the Marco River and in the Everglades. We had 4 boats from SAMI and 4 boats from GCSC. Most boats had guests aboard, so the total the attendance was once more 25 sailors. The weather was near perfect, high 70s with a nice breeze from the east. That meant a beam reach both for the southbound sail and the northbound sail. An east wind also meant almost no fetch in the anchorage perfect for calm nights and absolutely no rolling. The highlights were our BBQ lunch on the beach and an evening Bonfire on the beach under an almost full moon. For cruisers, it doesn t get much better. Thank you to the participating boats and their crews: 1> Westerleigh - Lorelei & Bob Diamond 2> Moon Beam - Lil & Ken Bardon 3> Natamus - Jonnie & Wes Westerop 4> Sea Kite - Antoinette Hall & Jaimie Dornan 5> Strider Robin and Dan Singer 6> Luna Blue ll - Stacey & Julian Onorata 7> Never Again ll Linda & Russ Colombo 8> Broad Reach Sherry & Sydney Kimble Read Jonnie Westerop s LuffNLaff article with pictures from this Cruise. Our first actual Sail To Day Sail of 2017 was to Champney Bay in Naples Harbor on Saturday, January 28 th. Another fun boating event. GCSC and SAMI skippers and Crews Rafted- Up their boats for an after sail lunch. Sail boats included Matias & Susan Santiago on Fela, Terry Nauck & Cathie Scanlon on Grand Cru, Wes & Jonnie Westerop on Natamus and Lorelei & Bob Diamond on Westerleigh.

Boats from the Naples / Marco Area should consider adding Thursday and Monday to allow additional travel days with a different stop each way in the greater Fort Myers area. This is one of CMCS favorite anchorages in Southwest Florida and a beautiful venue for spending the weekend (or longer!) out on the hook. Pelican Bay is part of Cayo Costa State Park, which has a ranger station with dinghy dock, beautiful hiking trails, spectacular Gulf beaches, and a tram from the ranger station to the beaches for those not into hiking. Entry into Pelican Bay is not particularly difficult but caution is advised. Don t cut corners unless you re familiar with the anchorage. On Friday evening we ll gather at Dog Beach at 4:00 PM for cocktails. Bring a snack to share. Dinner is on your own. Saturday can be spent hiking, sitting on the beach, etc. We might gather to dinghy to the Tunnel of Love (Cheedix Cut) or tour the various hidey holes nearby. Cabbage Key is a short dinghy ride for lunch or dinner. Saturday evening we ll again gather on Dog Beach for cocktails and Pot Luck Dinner around 4:00 PM. BYOB, and a dish to pass for dinner. Sunday is time to head home (or not!). Feel free to come early and stay late! If you plan to go, please contact James & Gina Brown: jebngeb@gmail.com or Bob Diamond rmdiamond@aol.com

7 SAMI Weekend Cruise to Everglades City Friday, March 24, 2017 Sunday, March 26, 2017 This is an Inter-Club Cruising Event - Power Boats and Sail Boats Welcome This can be a Drive to Event Sailing distance from Gordon Pass is about 39 NM. About 10 NM shorter from Marco I. and about 5 NM more from Doctor s Pass. Sailing Instructions and details will be provided to participants. Please contact Bob Diamond for RSVP and more information rmdiamond@aol.com The Rod and Gun Club Hotel is an historic building a great way to see what Old Florida was really like. It is as close to a trip in a time machine as most of us will ever take. Come for the weekend or longer or just drive down for Lunch on Saturday. CMCS Rum and Reading Cruise - aka Macomber Cruise March 31 April 2 This is an Inter-Club Cruising Event - This can be a Drive to Event Not that we need an excuse to cruise, but having someone to celebrate is always fun. Bob Macomber, a longtime member and world famous (or so he claims) author, will be hosting a Book Bash to celebrate his newest tome on Saturday April 1. Friday evening the fleet anchors off St. James City and educates itself on the variety of sipping rums. Saturday noon the dinghies head to Woody s Waterside for the Book Bash and fun, food and music. This is also a great event for Land Cruisers. This is more of an excursion than a cruise. We intend to anchor off York / St. James City unless the wind is uncooperative. Then Sanibel Bight is the obvious alternative. We will monitor channels 72/16. On Saturday we will flotilla in to Woody s for the Robert Macomber book signing event. Woody s is located on the Monroe Canal and is a very dog and usually sailor friendly place. There are no formal plans for Sunday which is typically a recovery / relaxation day. Assuming of course you don t have to hurry home. For information contact Bob Diamond rmdiamond@aol.com

13 Cruise to Panther Key By Jonnie Westerop Last week for the MLK weekend - a group of friends with sailboats traveled south 6 hours from Marco Island to Panther Key - an inlet amongst the 10,000 Islands area of the Everglades. To get to Key West, it would take us 4 hours by car and 19 hours by sailboat - so we were about a third of the way to Key West by boat. This was our first trip south on Natamus - we anchored for 2 nights in the river inlet. The boats included Westerleigh, Moon Beam, Natamus, Sea Kite, Strider, Luna Blue II, Never Again II and Broad Reach. We arrived by suppertime Saturday to find that our dinghy (small commuting boat with a 10hp outboard engine) - our engine was not working - paddling was the name of the game for this weekend. Our boat, Natamus, has a rather large draft - we stick 5 1/2' to 6' deep - so we need a small boat for transportation when we get to a destination. Panther Key was a gorgeous place, with gorgeous sunsets. Although nothing is ever as you expect. Saturday morning we awoke to find the boat closest to us, Never Again II, was grounded - really strange to see such a sight. I had to rub my eyes and think hard on where we were that this could happen. We had a huge moon the night before, tides follow the moon - we expected a 4' tide and got a 7' tide - and wallah - a ship is grounded on the shoal. It wasn't a huge disaster, by 4 pm that day, the grounded boat was again floating.

14 We had a great weekend, lunch and dinner on the beach, bonfire in the evening. Wes & I paddled back and forth to our boat - we saw manatees - like hippopotamus' - and other critters. What a wonderful way to spend a weekend - except for the gounded boat of course. January Membership Meeting - Chili Cook off. A great night for all. Especially the people eating all the delicious chili. Thanks for participating.
