So now it is time to start thinking about the coming season in Naples and starting to think about activities at GCSC. The Club will be offering more sailing opportunities and sailing lessons this coming season in an effort to give all club members opportunities to sail and learn on smaller boats as well as seminars on racing and rules and boating safety. We intend to have a wide variety of sailing opportunities geared to accommodate a variety of sailing interests including racing, cruising, social afternoon sailing, small boat sailing and hopefully small boat racing. We also have a great line up of social events planned including interesting speakers and great food and camaraderie at our monthly Membership meetings. Some new

events to be added including a wine tasting. We are doing this for you, the members, so if you have thoughts on any of this or any other opportunities that you think would be good for the membership please let any of the officers know. Lots of good things are going on right now in the Club and if you would like to be an active part of it we will are soliciting volunteers. Nominations to the Board and Officers for 2016 are being accepted immediately. This is a great opportunity to give back to the ALL VOLUNTEER CLUB so you can help make a difference. Remember ----"We do not stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing." The Sailplay Survey results are summarized below by Frank Brown. We encourage everyone to go to and fill out the survey Hello all I hope you had a wonderful summer! This is our second year with the Sailplay.com website. We refined it somewhat and added the sailing survey, last year's photos and the upcoming year's race schedule. Jerry has worked hard at gathering surveys hardcopies and then entered them manually on the website. We encourage everyone to go to the sailplay.com site and fill out the survey. You do not have to be a skipper of a boat. The survey will serve to get our feelings as a group out there and then the race committee can act on it and give you the races you want. Thanks to all who participated in the survey The survey at this point has 22 entries so far. There are nine categories to vote on. 1. Sail event preference, shows a pretty even split between single event entry and package entry for the year, at seven votes apiece. 2. Event award preference shows the club meetings be the preferred way closely followed by dinners and a distance behind is the breakfast. 3. Award type we would like to receive flags led the way with parchment certificates next and trophies only getting 4 votes. 4. Event duration got a whopping 13 votes for one day multi race event. 5. Event type was again a landslide with the most of votes going to Bouy racing 2/3/4 races a day. 6. For skippers meeting with the majority went with optional, followed by online only and then mandatory. 7. Start time was pretty unanimous at 18 votes for 10 AM. 8. Events per season went to continue as scheduled with 15 votes.

9. BOTY no added value came in first with 10 votes, moderately important came in second with 9 votes. I will post the final numbers on the website see you can look at them at any time and see what the current results are. Frank Brown Fleet Captain Universal Sailing Vice-Commodore s Comments (from Ireland August 18 th ) Dublin is a wonderful city in a very green country that is filled with some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. But you knew that. The four days we were in Dublin, on our way to Rome and a Mediterranean sail, were sunny. We were lucky. Ireland is so green because it rains 1/3 of the time. Even the uncountable bars are covered in beautiful floral displays. We thought Ireland was an English speaking country. It is officially bilingual, as you can see from the signage below. Their English is melodic and often delightfully unintelligible. It is not surprising that the solution to most problems is a pint of ale. Dublin is north of 53 degrees north latitude, placing Dublin as far north as frigid Labrador just on the other side of the North Atlantic. The Gulf Stream flows up from Florida to Ireland moderating the climate. Seldom very hot and never Arctic cold. Here in mid-summer, we saw most people wearing sweaters and light jackets. Yesterday, we took a "Busman's Holiday" and took the commuter train to Howth, their Larchmont, and had lunch at the Howth Yacht Club. A big friendly club with over 300 sailboats plus a handful of power boats. All on modern floating docks. HYC has a very active racing program with a racing office at dock level. The cruising and racing boats probably average around 35 feet. The junior sailors do not seem to use optis or other real small boats. In summer, the kids all wear full wet suits. I was told by one of the Club members that the reason that they do not have many power boats is that the first time the powerboats go outside of the several rows of large breakwaters that surround the harbor, all their dishes break, then on each subsequent motor trip more things break. Finally, the powerboat owner is broke. Sailing above 53 N is not for the faint of heart. In the adjacent harbor, here is a substantial commercial fishing fleet. One of the trawlers is named "Ambitious". The same name as our friend's Pam and Steve's sailboat in Larchmont.

Kris Scheppe takes 2 nd place in the 2015 US Disabled Championships Kris Scheppe sailed in the 2015 US Disabled Championship Aug The regatta was hosted by Southwestern Yacht Club in San Diego, California. He sailed in the doublehanded division with skipper Cristina Rubke (San Francisco, Calif) commodore of Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors. The doublehanded division was sailed in Martin 16 sailboats provided by Challenged Sailors of Sand Diego. San Diego presented tough sailing conditions with light winds and hot temperatures, but this didn't stop Rubke/Scheppe as they won the first race of the regatta. "Our plan is to have fun and sail the best we can." said Scheppe The second day of racing was light winds again and the winds died as the last race was being finished. The fleet of 8 Martin 16s were real competitive as there was a tie for 1st and a tie for 3rd after the second day of racing, leaving only a 3 points between first and fifth. The final day of racing compeitors saw more breeze which made for a great day of racing. Rubke/Scheppe battled all day in tough competition and finished 1st in the last race of the day. This sealed a 2nd place finish for them, one point behind US Sailing Team Sperry SKUD18 sailor Ryan Porteous. Scheppe said, "It was an honor to sail against such strong competition here in San Diego and come out of it with a 2nd place finish."

Kris Scheppe competes in the 2015 Blind Sailing Worlds Kris Scheppe competed in the 2015 Blind Sailing Worlds September with a team from Sailing Education Association of Sheboygan (SEAS). The event was held in Chicago and co-hosted by Chicago Yacht Club, Chicago Match Race Center, and Sail Sheboygan. Kris competed in the B3 division, sailing on the Chicago Match Race Center's Tom 28s. Day 1 started with light winds which died shortly after the fleet was on the water. With storms rolling in all boats were towed in with no races completed. Day 2 provided much more excitement with kt winds and choppy seas. SEAS team did well in the 5 races having one bullet 2-2nds and 2-4ths. This landed them in 2nd at the end of the day. Day 3 was filled with storms and 30 kt winds, so there was no sailing. Day 4 was a much lighter day with winds 8-12 kts. SEAS had a tough day finishing 5, 4, and 3 in the three races. The Great Britain team was able to pass them up leaving the SEAS team in 3rd. It was a well organized and fun regatta for all. Chicago Yacht Club was a wonderful host that made us all feel at home. There were 14 teams in the 3 categories from Great Britain, New Zealand, Canada, and the US GCSC RENDEZVOUS RECAP The 2 nd annual GCSC RENDEZVOUS provided the perfect approach to another season in Naples FL! What a wonderful Labor Day Holiday weekend, and knot a better way to celebrate the approaching Fall Season than with friends and families in the paradise like environment offered in SW FL on the Gulf of Mexico!! Thanks to all volunteers who made this delightful weekend of fun, frolic, food, and friends possible. Sherry & Sydney Kimble arranged the facilities and all landside accommodations again with absolute perfection. A huge THANKS to Gary Schwarting, Gwen Andersen, Jason Richards, and the entire team who made the waterside weekend possible. They spiced up the landside activities and entertainment also! They are Great entertainers offering a variety of acts! GCSC, the all-volunteer club, experienced something for everyone. The weather If you did not find what you wanted just wait a while (we had something for everyone). The sightings at sea included the gigantic turtles. The weather included wind, calm, sun, clouds, and then the rains that washed

the salt off the yachts, the skippers, and the crews discovered that we were all experiencing the meaning of wash-n-wear weather, which was also just a passing of the variety experienced while we were in port at the Gorgeous TARPON POINTE MARINA and Westin Resort! If you have never, you need to visit this facility! This member and participant volunteer cannot offer words that describe the reward of participating again in the 2 nd annual GCSC RENDEZVOUS! Sign us up for the 3 rd annual 2016 RENDEZVOUS please!! We want to be there again! Thank You All, Anonymous
